Problem 1

Problem 2

Consider a vector space V . Given v1 , v 2 V , show that H = SPAN ( v1 , v 2 ) is a valid

subspace of V .
For what value of h will vector y [4 3 h]T be in the subspace of 3 spanned by:

Problem 3
Problem 4

[1 -1 2]T , v 2 [5 -4 7]T , v 3 [3 1 0]T

Is the space spanned by vector 3t 2 5t where t a valid vector space?

T

Determine if y [4 8 6 -5]T is in the subspace of 4 spanned by columns of matrix:

3 5 9
8 7 6

A
5 8 3

2 2 9

Problem 5

For a vector space V, consider two sets of basis B : b1 , b 2 and C : c1 , c2 where

bi , ci 2 . Suppose that we know the following:

Representation of b1 and b 2 in the basis set C :
b1 4 c1 c2
b 2 6 c1 c2

Representation of a generic x V in term of the basis set B :

[x]B = [3

1]

Given this information, find [x]C. i.e. representation of x in basis set C. Can you propose
a simple solution to this problem by introducing a matrix?

Problem 6

Problem 7

Keeping in mind the definitions of Cauchy and convergent sequences, prove that every
convergent sequence is Cauchy.

Hint: Start from the definition of a convergent sequence and then apply triangle inequality
on it to prove that it satisfies the Cauchy definition.

Hint: W will contain vectors of the form x x1 x2 x3 x4 such that: x, w i 0 .

Problem 8

a) Let (X, d) be a metric space. Show that d m x, y min 1, d x, y is a valid metric.

b) Suppose, x1 n and x2 n belong to a vector space of periodic discrete time signals

with period N . The discrete time signals are real-valued. Determine whether the following
function is a valid inner-product or not:
N 1

x1 , x2 x1 k x2 k
k 0

Problem 9

Consider the vector space Lp ([a , b], ). Show that this space becomes Hilbert space only
if p=2.
Hint: You need to show that || || p satisfies parallelogram law only if p=2. If a given
norm does not satisfy parallelogram law we cant define a valid inner-product using that
norm.

Problem 10

Given a matrix:

A

0 0
1 0
1 1

a) Are columns of A linearly independent?

b) Determine a matrix Q whose columns are orthonormal basis of space spanned by
columns of A.
c) Verify that QT Q I
d) Using the matrix Q and the fact in part-c, find a matrix R such that A = QR
e) From parts a-d above, you have actually factorized matrix A into two matrices Q
& R. Give a concise and complete definition to this factorization principle.
