The
Packers
NFC
Championship Game loss in
Seattle was so last season.
Thats been the approach
around Lambeau Field
headquarters this week as
head coach Mike McCarthy
prepares his team for a rematch with the Seahawks.
Outside observers might
assume that players have
had this game circled on
their calendars since the
day regular-season schedules were released in April.
Well, if players did circle it,
their poker faces are mightily impressive.
Its just the next opponent, veteran linebacker
Julius Peppers said. We
have a great opportunity to
go out and get another win. I
think thats where the focus
is, not on who were playing.
Peppers made it a point
to avoid any mental distractions that could exist as a
result of thinking back to
Green Bays epic collapse
eight months ago. Those are
painful memories for Packers players, especially for the
35-year-old Peppers, whose
career is winding down.
Reminiscing about having a 12-point lead with five
minutes to play, yet finding
a way to lose in overtime to
Seattle, was deemed as not
being a healthy way to pre-

pare for Sundays matchup.

Were not, well, Im not
talking about last year, Peppers said. Yall can direct
those questions to the other
guys. Im strictly talking
about this game this week.
Aaron Rodgers shared
Peppers feelings on the
topic.
Its Seattle, its our
next opponent, its Week 2,
Rodgers said. Were going

to try and approach it just

like every other game, like
we approached last week.
It was an important week,
a division opponent. This
week, conference opponent,
a good football team and its
a home game.
Perhaps it began as a conscious effort that players had
to make in order to prepare
for this game no differently
than any others. But if so, it

has since evolved into a determined mindset to keep

any potential emotions about
the game in check.
We understand the
storylines, Rodgers said.
We played (against the
Seahawks) a couple times
last year. This is 2015. Its a
different season. Everyone
is dealing with different expectations and all the same
type of goals. Its different

personnel. Theyre trying to

be the best team they can be
in 2015, and were trying to
be the best team we can be.
But how? How can players be so casual about a
game that has fans so riled
up? Because McCarthy gave
his team closure on it during an offseason meeting in
April.

NFL Power Rankings

By Paul Imig
For Green & Gold Express

1. New England Patriots (Record: 1-0; Previous Rank: 3)

Tom Brady looks determined
to have one of his best seasons
yet. First, he defeated the NFL in
the DeflateGate ruling. Then, he
teamed up with Rob Gronkowski to
defeat the Steelers.
2. Green Bay Packers (Record:
1-0; Previous Rank: 2)
The Packers got a Week 1 win in
Chicago, but their run defense got
eaten up by Matt Forte. A win over
the Seahawks on Sunday night
would go a long way in showing if
this years Green Bay team has
what it takes to win a Super Bowl.
3. Arizona Cardinals (Record:
1-0; Previous Rank: 7)
Carson Palmer picked apart the
Saints defense, with Larry Fitzgerald looking like he still has plenty
left in the tank at age 32. Arizonas
defense stuffed New Orleans running attack to the tune of 2.7 yards
per carry.
4. Buffalo Bills (Record: 1-0;
Previous Rank: 8)
A decisive win over the Colts
was obviously a great way for Rex
Ryan to begin his Bills tenure. Tyrod Taylor was efficient at quarterback, and Buffalos defense (even
without Marcell Dareus) was able
to shut down Andrew Luck.
5. Denver Broncos (Record:
1-0; Previous Rank: 6)
Denvers defense was in top
form in the win over Baltimore. DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller combined to produce 11 QB hurries.
6. St. Louis Rams (Record: 1-0;
Previous Rank: 14)
The Rams have been building a defense in recent years that
has the ability to dominate in 2015.
Against the Seahawks, St. Louis

in Seattle.

did just that. Dont be deceived by

the 31 points given up by the Rams,
as one Seahawks touchdown was a
punt return and another TD came
on a fumble recovery.
7. Seattle Seahawks (Record:
0-1; Previous Rank: 1)
One overtime loss on the road
to a good St. Louis team doesnt
suddenly mean Seattle is falling
apart. But with a matchup looming
at Lambeau Field, the Seahawks
are in danger of starting off 0-2 in a
very difficult NFC West.
8. Kansas City Chiefs (Record:
1-0; Previous Rank: 15)
Alex Smith was in his best
game-manager mode in a win
over J.J. Watt and the Texans, even
with Jamaal Charles being held in
check. A Week 2 victory Thursday
night over Denver would help solidify the Chiefs as a true threat in
the AFC.
9. Dallas Cowboys (Record: 1-0;
Previous Rank: 9)
The Cowboys will have to get
by for a month or so without Dez
Bryant. But Dallas is a strong, balanced team that should be near the
top of the NFC standings all season.
10. Atlanta Falcons (Record:
1-0; Previous Rank: 19)
Chip Kelly and the Eagles had
all the hype heading into the Week
1 Monday night game with Atlanta,
but it was the Falcons who left with
a victory. Julio Jones went off for
nine catches, 141 yards and two
touchdowns.
11. Miami Dolphins (Record:
1-0; Previous Rank: 10)
A seven-point win over lowly
Washington doesnt breed much
confidence. Even a Week 2 win in
Jacksonville wouldnt convince too
many people that the Dolphins are
for real. But Joe Philbins team
should hang around all year.

12. Indianapolis Colts (Record:

0-1; Previous Rank: 4)
It wasnt a good performance
from Andrew Luck, nor from the
Colts questionable defense. Theyll
be in the Monday night spotlight in
Week 2 when hosting the New York
Jets.
13. Philadelphia Eagles (Record: 0-1; Previous Rank: 5)
The Eagles shouldnt panic after a Week 1 loss in Atlanta. But not
much went right for Philadelphia to
begin its regular season, especially
not the debut of $63-million cornerback Byron Maxwell.
14. Cincinnati Bengals (Record: 1-0; Previous Rank: 16)
The Bengals were leading Oakland, 33-0, heading into the fourth
quarter. The Raiders arent good,
but thats still complete dominance
over another NFL team.
15. San Diego Chargers (Record: 1-0; Previous Rank: 18)
The Chargers went on a 30-0
run to come back and beat the Lions in Week 1. Keenan Allen had 15
catches for 166 yards, while Melvin
Gordon split carries with Danny
Woodhead.
16. Pittsburgh Steelers (Record: 0-1; Previous Rank: 13)
Losing on the road to the Patriots while playing without LeVeon
Bell is nothing for the Steelers to
hang their heads about. But Pittsburghs defense could struggle all
season.
17. San Francisco 49ers (Record: 1-0; Previous Rank: 23)
The 49ers might not be as bad
as what many expected them to
be. They played a good all-around
game at home to beat the Vikings,
shutting down Adrian Peterson
and Teddy Bridgewater in the process.
18. Baltimore Ravens (Record:
0-1; Previous Rank: 11)

Baltimores offensive line was

embarrassed by the Broncos
pass-rush. The good news for the
Ravens is their defense looks like
it could be a top-10 group.
19. New York Giants (Record:
0-1; Previous Rank: 22)
The Giants gave the game away
to Dallas. Still, it was an overall
good showing on the road for Eli
Manning & Co.
20. Carolina Panthers (Record:
1-0; Previous Rank: 24)
The top receiver for Carolina
caught four passes for 45 yards.
That will be the theme all season as
the Panthers try to get by without
Kelvin Benjamin.
21. New York Jets (Record: 1-0;
Previous Rank: 31)
The Jets offense looked surprisingly good with Ryan Fitzpatrick at
quarterback. Its important to note,
though, that it looked good against
the Browns.
22. Detroit Lions (Record: 0-1;
Previous Rank: 17)
The Lions found a way to lose
in San Diego. Calvin Johnson had
only two catches for 39 yards.
23. Minnesota Vikings (Record: 0-1; Previous Rank: 12)
If the Vikings are going to be
as good as many projected, theyll
need to improve quickly over their
performance in San Francisco.
Scoring three points is never going
to earn a win.
24. New Orleans Saints (Record: 0-1; Previous Rank: 21)
Drew Brees always makes the
Saints respectable, but his top two
receivers Week 1 are both running
backs. With Jimmy Graham gone,
does Brees have enough weapons
to work with?
25. Tennessee Titans (Record:
1-0; Previous Rank: 30)
Marcus Mariota had a great debut. Lets see if he can do it a few

more times before anyone gets too

excited.
26. Houston Texans (Record:
0-1; Previous Rank: 20)
Ryan Mallett could take over as
starting QB after just one game.
If the Texans can ever figure out
their quarterback situation, their
defense should carry them into the
playoffs.
27. Chicago Bears (Record: 0-1;
Previous Rank: 26)
The Bears performed fairly well
against Green Bay. But actually
winning a game wont be any easier
for Chicago in the next two weeks,
with matchups against the Cardinals and Seahawks.
28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
(Record: 0-1; Previous Rank: 27)
Jameis Winston was bad in his
debut. The Buccaneers defense
didnt help much, allowing 35 points
to Tennessees offense.
29. Washington Redskins (Record: 0-1; Previous Rank: 32)
Washington hung around with
the Dolphins, but Kirk Cousins
doesnt have the reinforcements
alongside him on offense to win
many games this season.
30. Oakland Raiders (Record:
0-1; Previous Rank: 28)
Beginning the season by trailing
33-0 to Cincinnati was not exactly a
great start for the Raiders.
31. Jacksonville Jaguars (Record: 0-1; Previous Rank: 29)
Playing at home in Week 1,
the Jaguars scored nine points.
Blake Bortles threw two interceptions and had a 54.5 passer
rating.
32. Cleveland Browns (Record:
0-1; Previous Rank: 25)
Cleveland allowed the Jets
(without Geno Smith) to score 31
points. Offensively, Johnny Manziel had a long touchdown pass,
but he also fumbled twice.

From Rajis perspective, the reality of falling a few minutes shy of

reaching the Super Bowl wont affect him or his teammates.
We didnt forget about the
game, but the only way you can
learn from a situation like that is
to take a more analytical approach
and not so much an emotional ap-

proach, Raji said. After you talk

about it and move past it, leave the
emotions behind, but take the lessons and move forward.
One distinctive difference between the Sunday night game
and the two losses to Seattle last
season is location. Green Bay
has lost three consecutive games

to the Seahawks, all within the

past three seasons in Seattle.
The home-field advantage in
this budding rivalry cannot be overlooked. Thats why McCarthy wore
a Get Loud, Lambeau shirt to his
Wednesday press conference.
We hope (Packers fans) show up
and give us that homefield advan-

tage that Seattles benefited from

so much over the years, Clay Matthews said.
If the Packers do finally get a
win over Seattle, it would send the
Seahawks to an 0-2 record. It would
also ensure that Green Bay doesnt
begin 1-2, which it has for each of
the past three seasons.

Keys to the Game: Packers vs. Seahawks

By Green & Gold Express Staff

The Green Bay Packers are 3.5-point favorites in Sundays NFC Championship rematch against Seattle, according to online
bookmaker Bovada. Heres the breakdown:

When the Packers have the ball

Seattle is one of three teams in NFL history to lead the league in points allowed
for three consecutive seasons and the first
team since the famed Purple People Eaters
from Minnesota four decades ago. Seattles
unit dominated the two matchups against
the Packers powerhouse offense last season.
While Green Bay led the NFL in scoring
with 30.4 points per game, the Seahawks
limited Aaron Rodgers & Co. to a total of 38
points in the two meetings. In those games,
Rodgers threw two touchdowns vs. three interceptions. In his other 16 games, he threw
40 touchdowns and only five interceptions.
While Seattles Legion of Boom secondary gets the attention, the defense as a
whole is built around speed. Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril attack off the edges as
defensive ends. Bruce Irvin, Bobby Wagner
and K.J. Wright form the fastest linebacker
corps in the NFL, giving them the ability to
cover tight ends and backs in the passing
game and quickly close lanes in the run-

ning game. With all of that havoc up front,

Seattles defensive backs can smother the
passing game. Sherman and safeties Earl
Thomas and Kam Chancellor were firstteam All-Pros last season.
However, the Rams not exactly an offensive juggernaut put up 34 points in an
overtime victory in Week 1. Chancellor is
holding out and Shermans sidekick, Bryon
Maxwell, signed with Philadelphia in free
agency. Without them, St. Louis had eight
passing plays of at least 20 yards. The expected return of cornerback Tharold Simon
(toe) should help, but Chancellor is not expected to be back.
Im sure they miss him a lot, Packers
receiver Davante Adams said. Hes a great
player and tool for them. Thats a big presence theyre going to be missing.

When the Seahawks have the ball

The obvious starting points on Seattles

offense are running back Marshawn Lynch
and quarterback Russell Wilson.
Since 2011, Lynch leads the NFL with
5,430 rushing yards and 56 total touchdowns.
Watching him run, its hard to believe hes
only 215 pounds. In last years games against
the Packers, he broke a total of 22 tackles
including 14 in the NFC Championship
game, according to ProFootballFocus.com.
Hell provide the stiffest of tests to a defense

that couldnt stop Matt Forte last week. Packers coach Mike McCarthy counted doubledigit missed tackles in that game.
Wilsons 36 wins in his first three seasons
as the starter are an NFL record and his .735
winning percentage trails only Tom Brady on
the all-time list. Sure, hes been the beneficiary of a great defense, but he has succeeded despite an underwhelming supporting
cast on offense. Hes clutch, too, with 15 of
his 36 wins being fourth-quarter comebacks.
Command of the offense, McCarthy
said. Obviously, very comfortable and
makes a lot of plays with his feet. Gets the
ball out of his hand. Hes much better in the
quick game at this point in his career than
he was early in his career. Can make all the
throws. Hes an electric player. He pulls the
ball down and he tries to make plays.
Seattle made a dramatic upgrade to an offense that had little to offer beyond those two
by acquiring elite tight end Jimmy Graham
for the Saints in exchange for standout center Max Unger and a first-round pick. With
his poor blocking, Graham may be nothing
more than a glorified receiver, but what a
receiver he is. Over his past four seasons,
the 6-foot-7 Graham has averaged 88.8 receptions and 11.5 touchdowns, with never
fewer than 85 receptions, 889 yards or nine
touchdowns. Last season, Doug Baldwin
had a team-high 66 catches and nobody else

had more than 38. Lynch led the squad with

four touchdown receptions. In his debut last
week, Graham caught six passes for 51 yards
and a touchdown.

Special teams
Seattle and Green Bay drafted returners in the third round, with the Seahawks
grabbing fleet-footed Tyler Lockett and
Green Bay picking swift and powerful Ty
Montgomery. Both provided instant impact
last week, with Lockett returning a punt 57
yards for a touchdown and Montgomery returning two kickoffs for 40-plus yards. The
kickers are excellent, too. Seattles Steven
Hauschka has made 85.7 percent of his career field-goal attempts. Seattles Jon Ryan,
who spent his first two seasons with the
Packers, provides a big edge at punter over
struggling Tim Masthay.

Coaching
With each owning a Super Bowl championship, McCarthy and Carroll are two of
the best in the business. Of note, Carroll is
3-2 against the Packers, including three wins
in three seasons with the Seahawks. And for
what its worth, McCarthy is 10-5 on Sunday
nights while Carroll is 13-1 in prime-time
games.

Packers Notebook
By Green & Gold Express Staff

Rodgers struggles
against Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks cornerback

Richard Sherman called Green
Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers the best quarterback in the
world.
If thats the case, then what
does that make Seattles defense?
Rodgers ranks No. 1 in NFL history in passer rating, touchdownto-interception ratio and interception percentage. But against the
Seahawks, Rodgers looks like a
mere mortal. In losses at Seattle
in Week 3 of 2012, Week 1 of 2014
and the 2014 NFC Championship,
Rodgers had a passer rating of
72.3 with two touchdowns and
three interceptions. Green Bay
has averaged 16.7 points in those
three games.
Its football. Youve just got
to execute, Rodgers told a huge
throng of reporters at his locker
on Wednesday. Its tough to win
on the road. Weve been a formidable opponent at home. Youve
got to take care of the ones you get
at home.

Playing pass defense is what

the Seahawks do best. Since the
start of the 2012 season, Seattle is
the only team in the league with
more interceptions than touchdowns allowed. Not even Rodgers
has been able to put a dent in that
unit.
Honestly, I dont know. We just
play hard, Seahawks cornerback
Richard Sherman said about that
success. Hes a phenomenal player. We just play as hard as we can
and let the chips fall where they
may. I dont think we do anything
particularly different. Weve got
to fly around and try to make our
plays when theyre there.

Revenge on their minds?

Both teams tried their best to

downplay the massive hype surrounding this matchup. The fact
that Green Bay gave away the
NFC Championship at Seattle last
season, blowing a 19-7 lead in the
final 4 minutes and losing 28-22 in
overtime, will not be a factor on
Sunday night, player after player
said this week.
Time in this case, eight
months heals all wounds.

That was 2014, Rodgers said.

That was a different deal. We
played up there, it was different
teams, our personnel looks a little
different. Theres really not a lot of
carryover.
Sherman was on the other end
of that incredible outcome. But
even the loquacious cornerback
wasnt interested in taking a walk
down memory lane.
Honestly, I dont even remember, he said.
The Packers, of course, will
remember that day for the rest
of their lives. But they swear this
is just one game out of 16, that
theyve moved on.
I can assure you, its not something thats talked about much,
linebacker Clay Matthews said. I
know its media-driven. It started
last Sunday with the promos and
everything, but weve heard talk
of it being a revenge game, but
ultimately this is just the second
game of the season.

Something special?

Its only one game, but the

Packers special teams are off to a
good start.

Comfort

Last season, they finished last

in the Dallas Morning News annual compilation of 22 special-teams
categories. On Sunday, however,
rookie Ty Montgomery jump-started a slumbering kickoff-return
unit and Davante Adams cleanly
fielded Chicagos onside kick to
seal the deal.
Montgomery had returns of 41
and 46 yards against the Bears.
Thats as many 40-plus-yard runbacks as they had in 2013 and 2014
combined. Through Week 1, Green
Bays average starting field position following a kickoff (not including onside kickoffs) is the 28.6-yard
line. Thats more than 4 yards better than second-place Oakland.
Last season, Green Bay ranked
23rd with the 21.2 being the average starting point.
The teams execution on the onside kick obviously stands in stark
contrast to the NFC Championship debacle, when Brandon Bostick tried to field the ball rather
than block. The blunder cost the
Packers a trip to the Super Bowl.
Against the Bears, everyone did
their job especially John Kuhn,
who took out a Bears player to

that can fit into any budget.

give Adams a relatively easy play

on the ball.
Practice is one thing, special teams coordinator Ron Zook
said. To be able to do it when the
game is on the line and being able
to execute, thats a different thing,
too. And they handled it well (Sunday).

Jones vs. Legion of Boom

Its easy to blame Bostick for

what happened in the NFC Championship Game but the Packers
offense failed repeatedly to put
away the Seahawks.
Remember, the Packers forced
five turnovers in that game but
managed only one touchdown as
Jordy Nelson (five receptions,
71 yards), Randall Cobb (seven
catches, 62 yards) and Adams (one
catch, 7 yards) were limited to 13
receptions for 140 yards with only
one gain longer than 15 yards.
With Nelson on injured reserve
and Cobb nursing an injured shoulder, the Packers need another productive game from James Jones.
Against Chicago, Jones returned

Sherman learning nickel position this season

Star cornerback could cover Cobb
The Associated Press

The text message arrived

to Richard Shermans phone
late on Labor Day, just six
days before the Seattle Seahawks opened the season.
The message sent? Sherman needed to start immediately learning the responsibilities and coverages of
being the defensive back covering slot wide receivers in
Seattles defensive scheme.
Thats what they told
me to do and I do what my
coaches tell me to do, Sherman said.
One of the criticisms
thrown at Sherman is that
he only plays one side of
the field. Its a fact that pundits and fellow players have
used when trying to find
fault with Shermans game.
But there was Sherman in
Week 1 against St. Louis lining up not at his normal left
cornerback position, but in
the slot usually matched up

against speedy St. Louis wide

receiver Tavon Austin. It was
a last-minute request by the
Seahawks coaching staff,
deciding that Sherman playing in the slot and DeShawn
Shead taking over as the outside cornerback in passing
situations was the best option
against the Rams.
This may be more than
just a one week experiment,
especially with the challenges Randall Cobb can provide
as a wide receiver in the
slot when Seattle travels to
Green Bay on Sunday night.
Were going to use it as it
fits, and each week if you ask
me Im not going to tell you,
Seattle coach Pete Carroll
said. But I think its a real
positive for us, and well investigate it every week and
see how it goes, how it fits,
and see where we want to
use it.
Sherman has established
himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL playing

on the perimeter and almost

exclusively on the left side
of Seattles defensive alignment. Its how the Seahawks
coaches have chosen to play
their cornerbacks, although
its helped in previous seasons to have the likes of
Brandon Browner and Byron
Maxwell playing opposite
Sherman.
Since taking over as a
starter in Seattles secondary there has been only
three times Sherman specifically followed one receiver.
He chased around Anquan
Boldin with San Francisco
and Stevie Johnson with
Buffalo during the 2013 regular season and last season
matched up on Dez Bryant
for the majority of Seattles
game against Dallas after
Maxwell was injured.
According to STATS,
Sherman was targeted four
times in the opener against
the Rams, allowing two receptions for 29 yards.
Putting Richard inside
allows him to use all of the

savvy and the instincts that

he has, Carroll said. Hes a
marvelous player in terms of
awareness, and vision, and
anticipation and all of that,
and that position in there
does call for those opportunities in zones and all kinds
of different things that you
do there.
Sherman said the important elements of playing inside are understanding the
possible route concepts and
where the defender might
have an advantage with leverage. Not surprising, Sherman has leaned on his college and pro teammate Doug
Baldwin for advice. Baldwin
has played both outside and
in the slot in Seattles offense.
How much Sherman defends the slot receiver on
Sunday could be predicated
by how aggressive Aaron
Rodgers is throwing at Sherman. In the 2014 season
opener and again in the NFC
Championship game, Rodgers was leery of going after
Sherman.

Best possible 1st week sets stage for Seattle

They missed too many

than 100 yards of rushing

first half alone.
They were whistled for
10 penalties, one of which
wiped out a touchdown and
three others that resulted in
the opponents first down.
The defense allowed first
downs on 11 of 17 thirddown plays and two of three
on fourth down.
All told, it could not have
been a better first week of
the season for the Green
Bay Packers.
For the first time in four
years, the Packers enter the
second week undefeated,
and for all of the preseason
hand-wringing over injuries,
there was a collective sigh of
relief for the defending NFC
North champs and cause for
high optimism as the season
rolls on.

rest some persisting worries about how the offense
would function without their
best receiver, Jordy Nelson.
They did this because
the strongest component
of the offense did his usual
thing. In a turnover-free
performance that included
18-of-23 passing, quarterback Aaron Rodgers
solidified his station as
Capn Crunchtime, guiding
the Packers to two fourth-

quarter touchdowns and

eventually blowing open a
one-point game against a
spirited but overmatched
Bears team.
It may not have been the
lopsided fanny-tanning that
Packers coach Mike McCarthy prophesized in the
pregame lead-up, but the
most nagging doubts about
the passing game were extinguished, and the biggest
question left to ponder
happily was how James
Jones was still available.
The Packers wide
receiver, a third-round pick
in 2007 who left for Oakland as a free agent before
the 2014 season, could not
stay on with the New York
Giants this preseason after
being released by the Raiders, and signed with the
Packers after Nelson was
declared out for the season.
Jones made his return
a memorable one, scoring
two touchdowns on four

receptions, and would

have had a third TD but
for one of the aforementioned penalties. He also
drew a pass interference
penalty that set up another touchdown.
Defensively, Clay Matthews demonstrated his
value once again, first
preventing a touchdown
by catching Bears running back Matt Forte from
behind, and then virtually clinching things with
a brilliant fourth-quarter
interception made with a
quickness that suggested
his knee and elbow injuries
are manageable.
Defensive end Julius
Peppers showed that he is
still a big-play guy, making a strip on a sack of
Chicago QB Jay Cutler
and recovering the fumble
that was subsequently
overturned on replay. The
Packers hope for a steady
diet of plays like that from

Peppers, who at 35 is not

the rush lineman he once
was but nonetheless is still
a force.
That wasnt our best,
Peppers said afterward,
but well get better.
Just in time to welcome
Seattle to Lambeau Field.
It is safe to assume that
no one will need any prodding from the Jumbotron to
make some noise when the
Seahawks bring their act to
Green Bay Sept. 20.
The re-acquainting of
the two franchises will be
played to a national audience Sunday night, with the
two teams regarded as the
best in the NFC sorting out
a potential playoff homefield tiebreaker down the
road.
It will be a refreshing
change of scenery for the
rivalry, the last three games
of which have been played
in Seattle, all three won by
the Seahawks.

A revenge factor is obvious. Few are the defeats

that surpass last years
conference championship
overtime loss in terms of
abject frustration. There
also still lingers a slight
bitter aftertaste from the
infamous Fail Mary loss
to the Seahawks in the third
week of the 2012 season.
This has become an energetic rivalry.
Packers coach Mike
McCarthy denied there
being any extra motivation
for Seattle, saying instead,
I know who were playing.
Were focused on winning
the game.
Seattle and Green Bay is
just another game, and the
Taj Mahal is just another
monument.

Bears see benefits from Rolles leadership

The Associated Press

Demontre Hurst could

sense Antrel Rolles impact
on the Chicago Bears right
from the first workouts and
meetings.
There was just a little
more depth and detail to the
questions the three-time Pro
Bowl safety fired at coaches,
something developed over a
decade in the NFL.
Hes always one step
ahead of the coaches, Hurst
said. Hes played so many
downs and seen so many
things from different coaches, players, different quarterbacks hes faced in the
league.
This week, hes seeing a
bit of his past.
The Bears (0-1) host one
of his former teams when
Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals (1-0) come to
Soldier Field on Sunday. And
Rolle could not help but take
a look back while he began to

get ready for this weekends

game.
Thats because he sees
a few similarities between
these Bears and the struggling Cardinals teams he
played on his first few years.
Chicago opened with a
31-23 loss to Aaron Rodgers
and the Green Bay Packers
last week. But while the result was awfully familiar for
a team coming off a five-win
season, the effort was not.
The Bears looked like a
team with a plan and showed
the sort of fight they rarely
did during last seasons collapse. They hung in, even
if they ultimately came up
short.
Whether things were
going good or they were going bad, we never gave up,
Rolle said. We kept fighting.
We kept pushing. We were
looking for the victory. We
were seeking, we were trying to find it, trying to find
it, we just came up short. I

think that says a lot.

The fight the Bears
showed brought back memories of his first two seasons,
when Arizona went 5-11 both
years and a knee injury limited Rolle to five games as a
rookie. He got better and so
did the Cardinals.
They jumped to 8-8 in
2007 and went all the way to
the Super Bowl the following season after going 9-7.
Arizona wound up losing by
four points to Pittsburgh, but
playing for the championship was another huge step.
We
werent
always
the most athletic team, we
werent always the most talented team, but we played
together and we played fast,
Rolle said. And we fought,
we fought with every inch of
our body and this team is going to get to that. Im pretty
sure of that.
Its a leap the Bears,
with one playoff appearance
since the 2006 teams Super

Bowl run, are trying to make.

They have a new general
manager in Ryan Pace and
coach in John Fox after firing Phil Emery and Marc
Trestman following last
years collapse.
Theyre putting more emphasis on the run and less
on quarterback Jay Cutler.
defense that ranked among
the worst in franchise history the past two years has a
different look, with a revised
roster and a switch from a
4-3 scheme to a 3-4.
Rolle, who played the past
five seasons with the New
York Giants, was signed to a
three-year contract in March
with the idea that he would
give the Bears a playmaker
and a stabilizing force.
Hes been successful for
a long time, rookie safety
Adrian Amos said. You respect that.
Hurst, in his second season, said he has tried to pick
up as much as he can from

the veteran, whether its

through observation or communication. He said Rolle is
constantly telling him what
to look for, offering tips.
You pay attention,
Hurst said. You want to
relay everything hes doing

because he knows exactly

what hes doing. Hes been
in this league for a long time.
You just try to learn a lot of
his habits studying, on the
field. Hopefully, when I get
my chance I can be that vocal, too.

Run over in Week 1, Vikings try to rebound

Coach doesnt expect major
personnel changes vs. Lions
The Associated Press

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Teddy Bridgewater did not have a good game in the Vikings Week 1 loss
to San Francisco, but the focus this week has been on the rushing defense.

The Minnesota Vikings

and their defensive-minded
head coach spent all offseason focusing on improving a
run defense that was among
the worst in the league.
After getting run over
by Carlos Hyde and the
San Francisco 49ers in the
season opener, a humbled
defense reconvened on
Wednesday with few answers for what went wrong.
Honestly, they ran maybe two or three plays over
and over again, linebacker
Anthony Barr said. We just
couldnt stop it. It was simple. We knew it was coming,
we just couldnt stop it.
Hyde racked up 168 of
the 49ers 230 yards on the
ground, a dominating effort
in a 20-3 victory that wasnt
really that close. The Vikings
offense struggled mightily as
well, but Zimmer was at a loss

when trying to find justification for the undisciplined performance by a defense that
was determined to put the
embarrassments of last season behind it.
We did a lot of uncharacteristic things there,
Zimmer said. We jumped
inside blocks a lot, we ran
underneath blocks, we didnt
fit in the right place a lot of
times, we didnt tackle good,
we didnt get off blocks, we
had one guy making the
tackle a lot of times, which is
ridiculous.
The Vikings gave up 121.4
yards rushing per game in
Zimmers first season, ranking them 25th in the league.
They didnt make significant
changes to their front seven
in the offseason, concentrating more on improving the
group that they have and
increasing their understanding in the second year of

Zimmers system.
Andrew Sendejo was a
surprise starter at safety
opposite Harrison Smith,
but Zimmer pulled him as
the game went on in part
because of his difficulties in
supporting the run. Robert
Blanton, who was believed
to be the front-runner for
the starting job when the Vikings finished the preseason,
didnt fare much better.
Gerald Hodges is the new
starter at middle linebacker,
and the eager youngster was
out of position at times while
trying to make the big play.
Rookie second-round draft
pick Eric Kendricks didnt
play well either.
He didnt play that good
either, Zimmer said. It was
equal opportunity (Monday)
night.
The starting defensive line
of Brian Robison, Everson
Griffen, Sharrif Floyd and
Linval Joseph is entrenched,
and the linebacker corps of
Barr, Hodges and Chad Greenway is the most experi-

enced combination possible.

Zimmer said he didnt
recognize the group that
showed up on the video he
reviewed and figured the
sting of that beating would
refocus his players.
Weve got a lot of soul
searching to get done, he
said.
The Vikings host Detroit
on Sunday in their home
opener. The Lions have a
high-flying offense with Matthew Stafford and receiver
Calvin Johnson, but rookie
running back Ameer Abdullah averaged 7.1 yards per
carry and scored a touchdown in their season-opening loss in San Diego.
We practiced way too
hard to go out there and put
a show on like that, defensive end Everson Griffen
said. Its embarrassing, and
we should take it personal. I
take it personal. And were
going to go out there and
were going to do our job,
and thats all I can say, and
Im done here.

Detroit duo combined for dud in opening loss

The Associated Press

Calvin

Johnson

was

cloaked all game by the

San Diego Chargers, whose
game plan included trying

to shut down the superstar

with multiple defenders.
It worked, and the Lions
paid the price.
Johnson had a career-low
two receptions in a seasonopening game, catching half
of the four footballs thrown
his way, and finished with
just 39 yards receiving in a
loss at San Diego.
It felt like a light day for
the lack of plays that we had
more so than anything, he
said Wednesday.
Detroit had just 47 snaps
much fewer than San Diegos 74 as it blew a 21-3
lead in the second quarter in
a 33-28 setback.
If there is a bit of good
news for Johnson and the
Lions (0-1) going into Sundays game at Minnesota (01), perhaps it is that Johnson
feels fresh physically.
I didnt take hardly any
punishment, he said.
Matthew Stafford, mean-

while, shouldered some

blame for failing to get Johnson the ball more.
Everybodys got answers for everything, Lions
coach Jim Caldwell said.
Stafford said he gets it.
Anytime you lose a
game, youre going to get
questions about why you lost
and a guy like that only has
two catches, he said. Totally understand it.
Johnson and Stafford
have shown what is possible, despite double-teaming coverage, in their sixplus seasons together that
include two postseason
appearances.
In 2012, Johnson set an
NFL single-season record
with 1,964 yards receiving
and had a league-high 122
receptions. The three-time
All-Pro also had an NFLhigh 1,681 yards receiving in
2011.
You have a great player

like that you want to give him

the ball as much as you can,
theres no question, Stafford said. Have I been guilty
in my career of throwing it to
him when some other guys
in this league may not of?
Yeah. But, I trust in him and
understand that. But, at the
same time we have a lot of
play makers.
Johnsons
surrounding
cast includes receiver Golden
Tate, who had career highs
with 99 receptions and 1,331
yards receiving last year;
second-year tight end Eric
Ebron, who matched a personal best with four receptions at San Diego; and dualthreat running backs Ameer
Abdullah and Joique Bell.
It makes my job easier,
Stafford said.
Staffords tasks were
made more difficult against
the Chargers because he
appeared to hurt his throwing arm. He was able to par-

practice with what the team
labeled a right-upper arm injury, which Johnson noticed
during the game.
You could see little grimaces and stuff like that,
but hes fine, Johnson said.
Hes fought through worse
things in his career, so I
have no doubt that hell be
ready to go.
Staffords arm was covered by a protective sleeve
on Wednesday, but he didnt
sound concerned.
I feel good, Stafford
said. Im ready to go.
If Johnson goes long
stretches of a game without
getting targeted, he plans to
stay cool and collected while
he communicates on the
sideline with teammates and
coaches.
Im not going to be over
there to berating them on
the sideline or anything like
that, he said.
