Softball Tournament Swings In $8,000

For Bone Marrow Charity

by Kerry Breen
n Sat. Aug. 15, residents of East
Hanover stepped
up to the plate at a softball
tournament that doubled as
a charity event to benefit
the Be The Match national
registry.
The softball tournament
was a way for people to
learn about donation, and
register themselves, all
while enjoying a popular
sport on what turned out to
be a beautiful Saturday
morning in East Hanovers
Lurker Park. The softball
tournament, held by the
New Jersey Career Fire
Chiefs Association, is an
annual event, although
their cause changes from
year to year.
Eight teams played. It
cost each team $1,000 to
register, and each team also
helped raise money that
was donated to Be The
Match. Donations are used
to help grow the donor registry, assist patients finan-

cially, and fund important

research. Overall, the tournament raised $8,000,
according to Rebecca
Kolas, a spokesperson for
Be The Match.
The East Hanover Fire
Department team, captained by Joe Sperli, raised
$1,000. The East Hanover
PBA, captained by Jesse
Novalis, raised $1,000. The
Fire Department of Jersey
City, captained by Jason
Greco, raised $225. The
New Jersey State FMBA,

captained by Tim Duecsch,

raised
$1,000.
The
Livingston
Fire
Department, captained by
Dennis Britt, raised $1,000.
The Newark Firefighters
Union,
captained
by
Charles
West,
raised
$1,000. The New Jersey
Career
Fire
Chiefs
Association, captained by
Bob Caruso, raised $1,000.
The U.S.C.A., captained by
Gerard Centanni, raised
$1,000.
Each team set individual

donation goals, an ideal

amount of money that they
hoped to raise by the end of
the tournament. Every team
was successful in fulfilling
its goal. Donations were
made mostly through a
website created for the
event.
The first pitch was
thrown by five year old
Delaney of Woodridge.
Delaney was diagnosed
with cancer at three months
old, and is the president of

P.G. Chambers School Hosts 11th Annual Golf Classic

.G. Chambers School in Cedar Knolls

plans to host its 11th Annual Golf
Classic and dinner reception at
Roxiticus Golf Club in Mendham on Oct. 5.
With stunning views of central New Jersey,
this best ball shotgun start game offers
golfers the opportunity to experience the fall
grandeur of Roxiticus Golf Club while supporting students with disabilities who attend
P. G. Chambers School in Cedar Knolls.
Event Chair and P.G. Chambers School
Board Vice President, Tom Walsh of Avison
Young, encourages all to come out on the
green for the children, says Walsh. Our
sponsors and players look forward to this
event, year after year. We're excited to have
this platform to spread the word about a
great school and how the schools programs
impact students with a wide range of complex disabilities.
Each foursome includes golf cart, green
fees, a hospitality gift, lunch, cocktails, dinner, and awards. PGCS students serve as
guest greeters, help with registration, and
welcome guests to the outing, bringing the
faces of the school to our community. The
proceeds from the days events will support
the state-of-the-art education and therapy
programs at P.G. Chambers School.

from $500 and up. We encourage and welcome all to support the golf outing and be
included in the P.G. Chambers School community. No amount is too small and no gift
goes unnoticed.
The event is not limited to golfers. The
evening festivities include prizes and gifts
for everyone, from a Phil Michelson autographed golf flag, to foursomes and some of
the areas most challenging courses, fabulous
golf equipment from the Roxiticus Pro
Shop, and many more surprises. Each year,
the spirited Sponsor a Child auction impacts
the school in a significant way, providing
needed funds for the schools programs and
special projects.
The reception includes a cocktail hour
and dinner, and guests are welcome to register for the evening only. To register a team

Boy Scouts Beautify Non Profit Agency Property

hanks to Daniel
Rubin of Troop 155
and his completion of
his Eagle Scout Service
Employment
Project,
Horizons property in Cedar
Knolls has been aesthetically improved. Daniel of
Whippany oversaw 57 volunteers with more than 200
work hours to complete the
beautification
project.
Thanks to Daniels hard
work and determination, he
raised more than $1,200 for
the project.
Daniel demonstrated a
high degree of integrity in
his stewardship of the donations entrusted to him,
impressing all with his
fundraising skills. He dedicated countless hours
toward researching plants
and shrubs, price-shopping
his purchases to ensure that
he would have enough funds
to complete the project and
potentially make a donation

to Employment Horizons
with any residual funds.
In early August, Daniel
proudly presented a check
for $460.94.
Employment Horizons is
profoundly grateful to
Daniel, his family and the
Boy Scouts for their volunteerism and generous support. We extend best wishes

to Daniel for continued success and thank him for his

leadership. He serves as a
shining example of how one

Brewfest Planned To Raise Money For Whippany Fire House

By Anastasia Marchese
he Whippany Fire House has a history of community involvement that has continued for more
than 100 years. Its current location in downtown
Whippany was built with money donated by citizens and
local businesses and raised through community
fundraising activities. Times have changed however and
the current firehouse isn't sufficient to meet the growing
needs of the community.
One of the major problems with its current location is
its proximity to the Whippany River, which places the
fire hall in a flood plain. During severe weather the
ground level of the building becomes flooded, causing
damage to equipment and seriously compromising the
firefighters ability to respond to emergencies.
Another complication is the fire station's central
location. The busy flow of traffic around the building
causes a greater likelihood of a collision as well as
increased response times. The building is also too small
to meet the needs of a much larger population then lived
in Whippany when it was built.
Instead of asking the town to fund the new building,
the Whippany Fire Department decided to ask the community to support them in their efforts to relocate. One
of the upcoming events is the Garden State Brew Fest
that will be taking place on Sat., Sept.26, at the Anchor

Golf Center, in Whippany. The Garden State Brew Fest

(GSBF) asked to partner with the Fire Department this
year and a portion of the proceeds will go to help fund
the continued relocation efforts. There are just 3,500
available tickets and the more people that attend the
more money will be raised.
Jen Shannon, of GSBF, commented on the selection
of the Whippany Fire department as its fundraising
recipient this year, "I saw a lot of their fundraising
efforts and was very impressed, they are doing a great
job and knew they were the perfect partner."
This year's event will feature three main tents: The
Oktoberfest experience, featuring German and autumn
brews; the Tri-state Tent featuring local brews from
New York State, New Jersey and Pennsylvania; and the
Best of National Craft Beer Tent; featuring great beers
from across the county.
In addition to the premium brews, there will be live
music and food vendors. For those wanting a premium
experience, there is a VIP pass. These passes come with
early access starting at 1 p.m., on-site parking, and a
special two hour food and beer pairing with hand selected beers available only to VIP ticket holders. VIP ticket
holders also have designated VIP bathrooms. At a festival with more than 3,000 attendees, that alone may be
worth the ticket price.

General admission tickets include a souvenir glass

with a specialty glass for those with VIP admission. All
ticket holders have access to the main event and the beer
is included in the ticket price.
Dale Cowley is the Chair of the Weights and Means
Committee for the Whippany Fire Department, and is
working with GSBF to co-ordinate the fundraising
efforts. When asked about the upcoming event he said,
"I am looking forward to seeing the community come
out and support us, so we can continue to serve them."
Cowley has a long history serving at the Whippany
Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter for more than
20 years. His hope of community support for the volunteer fire department's continuing efforts to relocate has
it's foundation in the department's history and the community's ability to support the department far into the
future.
General admission tickets to the GSBF cost $65 and
VIP tickets are $125.
Doors open for VIP attendees at 1 p.m. and general
admission at 2 p.m. The festival ends at 6 p.m. Tickets
are available online with other package options available as well as shuttle tickets to and from the parking
area.
To find out more about the upcoming fundraiser go to

Be The Match is a nationwide service
that helps blood cancer patients find the
bone marrow transplants they need. They
also fund lifesaving research and help
patients overcome the financial barriers
that can arise due to the costs of bone marrow transplant. Representatives from Be
The Match were present to help register
new potential donors, and answer questions regarding the registration process.
They also helped explain how to host a
marrow and/or blood donation event.
Registering as a bone marrow donor is
a long term commitment, explained
Johannson, but it is often the only way to

help those suffering from diseases such as

leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia,
sickle cell anemia, and other serious illnesses. Approximately 70 percent of
patients cannot find matches within their
own families, and therefore must turn to
the Be The Match registry in hopes of finding a donor.
We work every day to save lives
through transplant, as stated on its website, found at https://bethematch.org. For
the past 25 years, it has been the largest
and most diverse bone marrow registry in
the world.
We only registered three new donors,
said Elise Johannson, a Be The Match representative who was present at the event.
We always have a great turnout, but at the
end of the day education and awareness is
our goal, and we succeeded in that.

Volunteer One Day To Clean Up Elementary School In Morris Plains

ust in time for the new school year, the Borough

Elementary School in Morris Plains is the next school in
line to get its grounds cleaned up by a beautification and
safety initiative.
Volunteers with the One Day One School award-winning program will make its way over to the Borough School
on Sat., Oct. 10, to beautify the property and make sure its
grounds are safe to all. The innovative program focuses the
efforts of volunteer business owners, public and school officials, and students to beautify school property and enhance
safety.
Tom "Ace" Gallagher, founder of the nationally recognized One Day One School program, and Superintendent
Mark Maire of the Morris Plains School District are excited
for this next school clean up. Organizers are working with
school community members, inviting as many volunteers as
possible to support the Borough School event.
The entire initiative is based on encouraging students to
come out to participate and take ownership of their schools,
Gallagher says. It provides a way to give back to the community to provide our students and our community a school
that is safe, beautiful and a place we can be proud of.
Morris Plain Superintendent Mark Maire says, This is
an incredible service to our facilities, and we thank Mr. Tom
Ace Gallagher, founder of One Day/One School, for
selecting Morris Plains. We are thrilled to host an event that
brings local municipalities and school community stake-

holders together to promote beautification, safety and environmental awareness.

The idea for One Day/One School hit Gallagher- owner
of Whippanys Ace Gallagher Stump Grinding- while walking his children to school in 2007. Glancing up, he was
alarmed by dead branches threatening to fall from the tree
canopy. Recognizing the danger to school children, he contacted the districts superintendent and offered to donate his
professional tree care services and enlist volunteers from the
industry and community to make the school path safe.
He proposed organizing this project as a one-day event to
clean up the grounds of the school, remove debris, trim trees
and do landscaping. Given the high cost, specialized skill,
and safety considerations associated with tree maintenance,
the school district welcomed the opportunity and joined the
partnership for the one-day event.
From that project, One Day/One School moved each year
to a different location and grew to more than 200 volunteers
working hand-in-hand with school and municipal officials.
Gallagher and Maire will join planning teams from East
Hanover, Hanover Township and Morris Plains, who have
maximized resources across multiple municipalities to support this beautification program. This planning team will
include the mayor, chief of police, school administration,
HSA members, rotarians, Knights of Columbus and others.
The award-winning program brings together tree experts,
school officials, town representatives, local companies and

students who volunteer their time and services to make their

community school grounds cleaner and safer.
The programs objective involves one day of volunteer
teamwork at one school to remove dangerous tree limbs and

has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the
recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they
provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini
implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier.
Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an
integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

Animal Rescue

n Behalf of the Cats and Dogs at One Step Closer

Animal rescue they want to thank you for giving
them all a chance for life.
They are all grateful. Even though you cannot see their
tears, they are so happy you and your family took the time
out of your busy scheduled.
This money will help them to get their shots, food and
new homes. Their Temporary mommies are working very
hard to get all of them healthy so they can hopefully find
permanent homes.
My name is Jennifer and I am the owner of the Shear
Temptations in Whippany and I was thrilled to open for
this beautiful cause. I want to personally thank everyone
including Elaine and Gary LaSure, Cassie, Debbie,
Doreen McDermott for taking time away from their busy
schedules to help me as well as everyone who donated.
May God Bless you all.

landscape school grounds.
Since its inception in 2008, the initiative has collectively
saved Hanover and East Hanover townships, Florham Park
Borough and Denville taxpayers more than a half a million
dollars in tree work and landscaping.
Gallagher, a former Board of Education member and a
present committeeman in Hanover Twp. says, Every time
you can save a district a thousand dollars, thats a computer.
If you save $60,000, thats a new teacher.
When Morris Plains Mayor Frank Druetzler heard about
the award-winning program, he felt it could be a success in
Morris Plains. He introduced the idea to Maire, who was
thrilled with the potential benefits of the program.
Druetzler states, One Day One School is truly a shared
services program that is a great benefit to our local schools
and communities.
Druetzler and Councilwoman Suzanne McCluskey have
been working with the
leaders of those other towns, along with Maire, to bring
similar results for the Borough School grounds.
The Oct. 10 event at Borough School will be dedicated to
Ralph Politi Jr., a well-known East Hanover community
leader who was struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver
in 2012. Since the development of One Day One School,
Politi dedicated his services to provide a beautification
aspect to the program.

Many of the areas best tree companies and landscaping

services are on board once again, and they remain committed to making this day successful. The organizers are quick
to identify the grass-roots, voluntary nature of the program
as the central key to its ongoing success.
Start time for tree services and other professionals is 8:30
a.m. with area tree care partners and landscapers donating
their time, equipment, and services to prune and remove
dangerous trees and branches. At 9:30 a.m., students, families and volunteer crews will assist professionals in a complete cleanup of the area, followed by the planting of new
trees and shrubs. The days events will conclude with a DJ
and barbecue for all participants at 12:30 p.m., with food
contributed by local businesses and prepared and served by
Morris Plains Rotary Club volunteers.
Gallagher concludes, We are inviting everyone to
become part of this network of volunteers that are giving
back to the community; and of course any support you can
give would be greatly appreciated.
If interested in volunteering for this event, visit "One Day
One School" on Facebook for more information. Contact
Gallagher

Fundraiser Set To Keep Wheels Of Edison Museum In Motion

hose interested in socializing with folks who keep the

wheels of the museum turning at Edisons 19th
Century factory complex in West Orange can attend
the Muckers Ball fundraiser on Sat., Oct. 3. It promises a
tradition of food, drink, music and dancing under the big tent
- a location where Thomas Edison and his Muckers had
some great celebrations. For more info on the Muckers Ball
contact the Friends of Thomas Edison Historical Park
FoTENHP www.foedison.org; call 973-736-2916; or email
foe@foedison.org.
Touring the legendary work site of Thomas Edison and
the growing curiosity in Steampunk makes this National
Historical Park NHP in West Orange even more uniquely
remarkable today.
Steampunk is a subgenre of devotees that are fascinated
by retro science fiction, technology and artistic designs of
the late 19th-century that ignited with the force of steampowered machinery. Steampunk channels the era's perspective of those that lived during this futuristic thinking
Victorian and American Wild West age. Steampunk is about
revisiting its own distinct fashion, culture, architectural style
and art. It was a time of colorful futuristic storytelling from
H. G. Wells and Jules Verne. The Thomas Alva Edison factory laboratories and his Victorian Glenmont estate home in
West Orange are in themselves Steampunk time capsules
maintained by our National Park Service. It is also further
preserved by private funds, foundations and the Friends of
TENHP that do dedicated fundraising where it is needed.
They provide the additional renovations, enhancements and

special project exhibits that are not covered in the NHP

budget. The FoTENHP also promotes the eras pastimes of
gardening, fashion, advertisements and the music that were
connected to these Edison inventions in true spirit.
Coincidentally, the Victorian age of the late 19th Century
was also the pinnacle years of Thomas Edisons career that
made him the worlds famous wizard of invention capable of
moving ideas off from the science fiction category to the
world of tomorrow. In 1897 H.G. Wells created his science
fiction masterpiece The War Of The Worlds. The Hearst
newspaper group commissioned a sequel to follow it.
Science editor - Garrett Putnam Serviss would write the next
story. This sequel follow up was entitled Edisons Conquest
of Mars which appeared in Feb. of 1898. Thomas Edison
became the heroic character of this science fiction world.
The iconic persona of Edison was a name that lent the
believability factor to a new fiction genre the space techno-thriller. Serviss book was the first space battle to ever
appear in print.
The West Orange laboratory complex was built in 1887.
The facilities were well equipped with many kinds of
machinery and instruments, with a factory supply of materials from around the world that employed dedicated and carefully-chosen workers. Employees that worked at Edisons
factory laboratories did not need to read a science fiction
book to believe that Thomas Edison had the imagination to
take them into the future with his inventions and ideas.
There was a lot of excitement working for Thomas Edison
that attracted the best talent pool of employees not only

locally but from around the world. This pool also included
great performing artists for his film and music studio productions. Edisons closest workers were his engineering and
development team that he fondly called his Muckers. There
were great employee celebrations too that went along with
the hard work that helped produce the grist for futuristic pulp
fiction in its day.

Due to advanced age, deaths and relocations, the membership in Post 538 is critically low.

a) Selling poppies for which the monies
raised are used for visitations to the
Paramus Veteran Home on a monthly basis
where Bingo is enjoyed by both men and
women residents. Special gifts are also
distributed to our Veterans.
b) Bus trips to casinos where the
