Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa on 18th July
1918.
He was an intelligent man and went to university where
he studied law. His main interest was politics and he
became a member of a party called the African National
Congress.
In 1948 the government introduced apartheid into
South Africa. This meant that there were different laws
for black and white people.
Nelson Mandela and the ANC were fighting against this
terrible situation and so the government arrested him
and put him in prison. But during his years in prison he
became a symbol of freedom and the fight for equality
for everyone. He wanted black and white people to be
allowed to live together in peace.
Many, many people and the leaders of some countries
joined a campaign saying it was wrong that Mandela
was in prison and in 1990 he was released. In 1993 he
won the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1994 he became the
first black president of South Africa.
He retired from public life in 2004 and in 2007 a big
statue of him was put in Parliament Square London.
