Standard-Based Metro Reference Model

ITU-T GFP-F, VCat (HO, LO), and LCAS will be the first standards required by carriers
IEEE 802.17 RPR is also recommended to improve the data-awareness of metro
networks

Service-Aware E2E MPLS Network Concept

Emerging End-to-End QoS-enabled

metro-Ethernet services (e.g. digital
MPEG video, voice TDM/CES, VoIP, and
Ethernet) can be provisioned through
LSP connections over a IP/MPLS core
C.R.Lima, Oct. 2004

Summary
Ethernet services definition depends on the network protocol adopted
and the technology enabler used
GFP-F, VCat, LCAS, RPR, and MPLS are the layers 1and 2 protocols
of choice to enable service-aware metro-Ethernet networks
Inter-metro-Ethernet service hand-off can either be MPLS- or
SONET/VCat-based
A design trade-off must exist between QoS-enabled networks vs.
excess network bandwidth capacity
- i.e. the cost of $/bit/s vs. the cost of QoS-mechanisms and
required layer 2 enhancements
