- Palm oil itself is not the problem (aside from the fact

that it is full of saturated fat and therefore extremely

bad for your health), only when it is unsustainably
farmed and manufactured
- The Oil Palm Tree grows in the tropics in specific
conditions every palm that is planted needs over 3m
in diameter cleared around each tree, and takes
between 3 and 4 years to produce its first harvestable
crop
- As a result, large areas of tropical forests and other
ecosystems with high conservation values have been
cleared to make room for oil palm plantations
- Unsustainable palm oil is driving many species in the
equatorial region (esp. Indonesia) to extinction:
Sumatran tigers, orang-utans, elephants, sun bear, clouded
leopard, Malayan tapir, Asian rhinoceros
- Their homes are being bulldozed, they have nowhere
to go, no source of food, no source of protection
- Deforestation also equals loss of carbon sinks
- The huge level of deforestation also has adverse
impacts on the regions economy: instead of being
able to either sustainably harvest their rainforest
timber to sell or use the beautiful natural rainforest
for ecotourism, they are ripped off by big companies
looking to exploit the region
- Many palm oil companies are in alliance with
logging firms, meaning that in clearing forests they
get money twice: first from selling timber to
[unsustainable] logging firms, second by selling palm
oil
- Companies can also gain further income by placing a
bounty on the orang-utans the mothers are shot
and the babies are soil as they are valuable in the
illegal pet trade, or are kept in captivity under
horrendous conditions
- Malaysia and Indonesia account for around 90% of
world palm oil production, and in order to sustain this
demand, rainforests are being decimated at an
alarming rate
- OVER 300 FOOTBALL FIELDS OF RAINFOREST ARE
DESTROYED EVERY HOUR IN SE ASIA TO MAKE WAY
FOR PALM OIL PLANTATIONS
- Furthermore, many of the palm oil plantations in SE Asia
are on peat soils; the drainage of these carbon-rich
organic soils for plantations is causing massive
greenhouse gas emissions
- The palm oil industry is linked to massive human rights
violations, including child labour with little or no pay

Palm oil is an unnecessary and unhealthy product; there are many other oils that
are a) sustainable and b) healthier (eg. vegetable, canola, coconut, peanut, olive,
grapeseed)

What can I do?

- Dont buy products that contain unsustainable (often unlabelled) palm oil
o You can still purchase sustainable palm oil if all palm oil is completely
boycotted, the price will likely be driven down and as a result biofuel
companies will pick it up as a cheap alternative
- Download the Palm Oil Investigations app that allows you to scan the barcode of
products you are buying
- Like their page on Facebook to see alternative products
- Look for CSPO (not RSPO can lie about their commitment to sustainable palm oil)
o CSPO = the oil has been produced according to a set of environmental and
social criteria designed to ensure the rights of local communities are
respected and that no new primary forests or high conservation value
areas have been cleared for palm oil production
- Hey mum, this brand contains palm oil, can you not buy it anymore? Thanks
