1.0 SUBJECT
Royalite Residential Series Acrylic Dome and Singlelite Glass
Skylights.
2.0 DESCRIPTION
2.1

General:

The Royalite Residential Series Acrylic Dome and Singlelite

Glass Skylights are either domed plastic skylights or flat glass
skylights. The plastic dome skylight and the flat glass skylight
are either fixed or operable skylights, mounted on wood curbs.
The plastic dome skylights use double-sheets of Class CC2
plastic. Skylight sizes, dome rises and fastener requirements
are described in Tables 1 and 2.
2.2

Materials:

2.2.1 Acrylic Plastic: The acrylic plastic domes are formed

from double sheets of Class CC2 acrylic plastic produced by
ICI Acrylics, Inc., recognized in the evaluation report ER-4900.
The inner dome uses a 0.093-inch-thick (2.36 mm) Lucite L
acrylic sheet and the outer dome uses a 0.118-inch-thick (3
mm) Lucite L acrylic sheet.
2.2.2 Glass Glazing: Glazing is insulated, flat-glass units
consisting of a 1/4-inch-thick (6.4 mm) tempered glass exterior
face, 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) air space and 1/4-inch-thick (6.4 mm)
clear laminated glass inner face. The laminated glass inner
face consists of two plies of 0.122-inch-thick (3.1 mm)
annealed glass with a 0.03-inch-thick (0.76 mm) polyvinyl
butyral interlayer.
2.2.3 Gasketing Materials: All gaskets are extruded of
silicone or sanophrene. Glazing tapes must be closed-cell
polyolefin or high-density polyurethane. All sealants shall be
one-part high-performance structural silicone.
2.2.4 Aluminum Frame and Cap: Type 6035-T5 aluminum,
having a minimum 0.055-inch (1.4 mm) thickness, is used for
all extruded frame aluminum members. Aluminum caps are
used to secure the glazing to the base frame and are
continuously welded at all corners.

2.2.5 Wood Curb: The wood curb is nominal 2-by-6 Douglas

fir lumber having a minimum specific gravity of 0.50. Curbs
having greater dimensions must maintain a minimum 4-inch
(102 mm) distance between the plastic dome edges and the
roof covering.
2.2.6 Fasteners: The RS-2 and RS-3 aluminum caps
retaining the plastic dome or flat glass are attached to the
base frame with factory-installed No. 10, 5/8-inch-long (16
mm), self-drilling, hex head screw fasteners. The acrylic dome
skylights must be attached to the curb with No. 8, 21/2-inchlong (63.5 mm) self-drilling, hex head, coarse thread screws
as noted in Tables 1 and 3. Glass skylights must be attached
to the curb with No. 8, 21/2-inch-long (63.5 mm), self-drilling,
hex head, coarse thread screws as noted in Tables 2 and 4.
Fastener must be stainless, aluminized or galvanized steel.
2.2.7 Flashing: Flashing is minimum No. 26 gage corrosionresistant metal.
2.2.8 Screen: Each openable skylight has a removable
fiberglass insect screen and Type W/0.090 screen-retainer
spline.
2.3

Installation:

The curb-mounted skylights are installed on a nominal 2-by-6

wood curb having sufficient depth to mount the skylight at
least 4 inches (102 mm) above the plane of the roof. Roof
slope for plastic skylights is 1/4:12, minimum. The minimum
roof slope for glass skylights is 1/2:12 from the horizontal. The
glass skylight units must be mounted a minimum of 4 inches
(102 mm) above the plane of the roof when the roof slope is
less than 45 degrees from the horizontal. Roof coverings are
removed 12 inches (305 mm) beyond openings, and are reset
after the skylight is in place. Curbs are attached to roof
framing using No. 8, 21/2-inch-long (64 mm), self-drilling, hex
head, coarse thread screws, or nails providing equivalent
withdrawal resistance. The curb must be flashed with
minimum No. 26 gage [0.019 inch (0.48 mm)] galvanized steel
set in mastic. Flashing installation must comply with Section
1508 of the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC). A 1/2-inch
(12.7 mm) bead of nonsetting sealant or an adhesive-backed
foam weather stripping is applied to the top of the curb before
the skylight is installed. The aluminum skylight frame is
fastened directly to the wood curb with No. 8, 21/2-inch-long
(64 mm) self-drilling, hex head, coarse thread screws, using
each nail hole in the mounting flange. A minimum of two
fasteners per side are required, with the minimum total
number of fasteners as specified in Tables 1 and 2. Typical
installation details are shown in Figures 1 through 3.
