Service Letters in Electronic Form

Action Code: COMMERCIAL
Dear Sirs,
MAN B&W Diesel has issued more than 360 Service Letters since these were introduced in 1968. Our current practice is to send the Service Letters in paper form to the
owners, whereafter the owners decide on forwarding the Service Letters to their ships.
We have now decided to offer our Service Letters on electronic media e-mail as a
replacement for or supplement to the normal paper version.
This will enable owners/managers to distribute electronically to both their technical
organisation and to the vessels, which will make the distribution procedure quicker and
cheaper.
If you want to take advantage of this new facility, please complete and return the
enclosed sheet to MAN B&W Diesel, fax No. +45 33 851049.
We have furthermore made a CD-ROM containing all valid Service Letters. This CDROM costs DKK 500,- and can be ordered from our Diesel Service Department.
Yours faithfully,
MAN B&W Diesel A/S

Crankcase Relief Valve

Action Code: CASUALTY
Dear Sirs
In recent years there have been a few cases where a crankcase explosion has
resulted in injury to personnel who have been burnt by flames in the engine room.
To increase the safety of personnel in the engine room we have, in cooperation with
manufacturers of relief valves, initiated a comprehensive development programme for
improving the flame arrester function of the crankcase relief valves.
Various types of relief valves have been tested together with the manufacturers and
with the attendance of Classification Societies.
As a result of experience and the above mentioned development work, the
Classification Societies are now, under the auspices of IACS, considering new, more
stringent requirements for their approval of relief valves.
As the implementation of such new and more stringent requirements will minimise the
risk of personnel being injured if a crankcase explosion should occur, MAN B&W
Diesel has already introduced the new specification as a standard requirement.
Some Classification Societies now specify that the flame arresters in the crankcase
relief valves must always be replaced after a crankcase explosion. This point has also
been included in our standard requirement, and if a crankcase explosion has occurred
on one of your engines, it is therefore recommended that the flame arrester and, for
some valve types, the complete valve, is replaced.

Year-2000 Emergency Precautions

Action Code: COMMERCIAL
Dear Sirs
We have evaluated the possibilities for assistance in the unlikely event that the
Millennium change will lead to unexpected problems.
As we have already informed you, we have audited our internal systems and do not
foresee any interruptions in the service we normally offer with regard to spare parts
and technical service. However, external factors outside our control, such as electricity
supplies, transportation, etc., might still disturb the service.
We expect that in the event any problems should occur, these will be of a short duration and will hardly be worldwide. With a view to such a situation, we would like to
bring the facilities of our worldwide organisation to mind, especially our service centres
in Singapore and Dubai where spare parts stocks are available.
In all events we find it prudent to ensure that spare parts planned for use in the
beginning of January 2000 are ordered and onboard before mid-December 1999.
A satellite communication facility will be established at MAN B&W Diesel in Copenhagen, through which we will be able to assist with technical advice if all other
communication channels fail in the Copenhagen area. This facility will be open from
31 December 1999 and until any communication problems due to the Millennium
change have been overcome. Further information is available on the Internet at
www.manbw.dk.

26 98MC/MC-C/MC-S Engines
Reconditioning of Cylinder Liners
Dear Sirs,
We have recently experienced some cases of cylinder liner scuffing (heavy cylinder
wear) especially on the K80MC and K90MC engines.
Honing the cylinder liners has only proved successful in some cases, and we have
experienced that scuffing often re-occurs in units which have been honed. One
reason is that no general honing guidelines have previously been specified with
respect to large bore two-stroke engines.
Consequently, in cooperation with the Swedish company Chris-Marine, we have
prepared a reconditioning instruction, with the aim of assisting our customers in
achieving a qualified process for the reconditioning of cylinder liners in the event of
scuffing trouble and/or worn cylinder liners. The instruction is available from our
Technical Service Dept. upon request.
Expectations
We expect that the procedure will:
increase the lifetime of cylinder liners
increase the time between overhauls
Yours faithfully,

Check of Camshaft Coupling Fitted Bolts

Engine Types: S/K/L50-60-70-80-90MC/MC-C
4-12 Cylinders
Action Code: CASUALTY
Dear Sirs,
In some cases we have experienced that the fitted bolts between the camshaft flange
and the chainwheel flange can work loose after some time in service.
Loose coupling bolts may be an indication of insufficient alignment of the chainwheel
which, in this case, needs to be realigned. However, also insufficient tolerances of
reamer bolts and insufficient tightening of nuts have been experienced.
For this reason, we recommend that the ships crew check all bolts for tightness as
soon as convenient, however, not earlier than 9 to 12 months after commissioning of
the engine, and that they continue checking once a year until the engine is approx.
four years old. Please see the attached instruction No. S906-4 for checking the
coupling bolts and for precautions to be taken if any discrepancies are found.
If loose bolts are found, please contact MAN B&W Diesel A/S or the engine
manufacturer for further information regarding re-alignment of the chainwheel.
If no loose bolts are found, this is an indication of proper alignment, and no further
action is needed, except the mentioned checking once a year until the engine is
approx. four years old.
Yours faithfully,
MAN B&W Diesel A/S

Ability of Electronic Components on MAN B&W Engines

to Function Correctly after the Millennium Change
Action Code: Commercial
Dear Sirs,
In our Service Letter SL98-359/BHN dated September 1998, we informed you that we
would compile information on the above-mentioned subject from suppliers of electronic equipment for MAN B&W Diesel engines, and make the result of this available
before June 1999.
Our findings are based on information received from the listed suppliers of electronic
equipment and show that these suppliers confirm that the equipment will be able to
function correctly after the millennium change.
However, we recommend that you keep up to date with relevant information from the
suppliers on their respective www page sites on the Internet.
We ask you to contact the relevant engine builder asking for confirmation that electronic equipment or systems other than those mentioned on the list have a corresponding ability to function after the millennium change.
It should be mentioned that all MAN B&W Diesel engines can be controlled by the engine side control console, independent of the remote control system. This means that
the engine can be controlled as long as the air, fuel and water supplies are functioning.

Service Letter
Fuel Injection Valves Spring Guides
Action Code: Modification
Dear Sirs,

Recent research has shown that a simple modification of the fuel valve, involving a
reduction of the diameter of the spring guide, leads to a reduction in the amount of
soot and coke formed in the exhaust valve duct, and on the combustion chamber
components.
For the different engine types, the modification involves:
K/L - GF/GFC/GFCA, L - GB/GBE, K/L/S 50, 60, 70 (Mk1-3) MC/MCE:
Reduced spring guide diameter from 37.5 mm to 36 mm.
K/L/S 70 (Mk5), 80, 90MC/MC-C:
Reduced spring guide diameter from 51 mm to 47 mm.
The position of the clearance is shown in Fig. 1. If the clearance between the valve
holder and the spring guide at the thrust spindle is in the lower end of the tolerance
field and the viscosity of the fuel oil is in the upper end, the spring guide can
sometimes act as a damper piston during the opening and closing of the valve. This
means that the fuel injection pressure, especially during closing of the valve, is too
low, with poor atomisation and combustion as a result.
Please note that the modification can be carried out on existing spring guides, but as
the material is hardened on the surface that is to be machined, special care has to be
taken. We therefore recommend that the job is done by an authorized repair shop in
connection with the regular fuel valve overhaul.
Yours faithfully,
MAN B&W Diesel A/S
Encl.
