About this course

How do I find a placement?

This course is pretty special in that it is the first

in the UK in which the majority of learning
takes place in the working environment. It is
firmly focused on giving you the practical,
work-based learning you need to get a head
start in a successful business career with
outstanding blue-chip organisations.

Placements will be advertised by the course

team during the second term of Year One.
The course team will provide help during the
application process. We have been working
with our partners on the course for over ten
years, see below for current placement
providers.

We believe this degree better meets the needs

of motivated graduates and employers than
conventional three- or four-year degrees in
Business Studies. The fact that you spend two
years in a company compared to the usual
one results in higher-level work roles being
assigned to you.

What happens after the

course?

How does it work?

This course lasts for three years. You will spend
the first year studying full-time at Nottingham
Business School and then continue studying
while being employed on a two-year
placement at one of the prestigious
companies we work closely with. During Years
Two and Three, youll attend the Business
School for four three-week study blocks.

For further information please view the BABM

film on the Nottingham Business School
homepage at www.ntu.ac.uk/babm

How do I apply?
As you might expect for courses of this nature,
there are only a limited number of highly
sought-after places, so the selection process
for entry is rigorous and based firmly on merit.
See page 29 for details on entry requirements
and how to apply.
Supporting companies include:

Graduates from this course have a 100%

employment rate. With work experience in a
blue-chip company under their belts, they
succeed in entering more management roles
or graduate schemes than those studying
other business-related degrees. Graduate jobs
include researcher to CEO, strategic analyst
and market development manager.

What about funding?

Course fees in Years Two and Three are paid by
your placement company. You will also be
paid a salary for those years which will range
from 11,000 - 13,000 per annum.

BA (Hons) Management Studies

N201 BA/MS

About this course

The BA (Hons) Management Studies is a fast track three year management degree which incorporates a one year work placement. The course has
been designed to give a clearly structured business education by combining theory taught in the classroom environment with practice learned while
on placement. Unlike the traditional sandwich degree programme where students graduate after four years, this course has a major advantage as
students will complete it within three years but still would have gained one years work experience.
Employability and workplace performance are an important aspect of the course, combined with academic rigour and quality, as unlike traditional
sandwich degree programmes the placement year is assessed.

Varun Dhawan
BA (Hons) Business
Year Three
I enjoyed the mixing of modules, each one
tackles a different global issue, this has given
me a wider prespective on the business world.
I have learned that in order to manage a
successful business, close attention must be
paid to both the internal and external
environment.
My time at Nottingham Business School has
definitely influenced the path I wish to
choose; before I came to university I was

unsure about what I should do in the future,

but now, after graduation I feel I will have a
very clear route to follow.
Upon graduation I will go back to India and
work for a TV studio in the finance
department. My plans are then to create my
own production house that would make
media software for TV channels; the
entertainment industry is one of the fastest
growing industries in Asia.

Youll be encouraged and supported to secure

a placement by the end of the first term of
Year Two.

BA (Hons) Business Management and Marketing

Year Two

Year Three
I have enjoyed the university experience
greatly, I have learned the value of time
management and the importance of making
sure I'm well prepared.
The flexibility of the Business Management
programme is something that really suits me, it
feels good to know that I can specialise and
that the choices I made at the start of the
course aren't completely set in stone."
My plans for the future involve joining the
Bhadana Group, my family business, hopefully
Ill be able to manage one of the many
different sectors which range from aviation, to
mining to real estate.

Ive really enjoyed the

opportunity to cover
different business areas
from marketing to
accountancy, the
modules constantly
provide opportunities for
cross referencing which is
significant in the real
working world.
I feel that the Year Two strategy module has
certainly pushed me towards consultancy work,
it gave so many real-life scenarios and helped
me to gain a vision of the various possibilities
within the business environment.

Placement Profile
Lucy Woodhouse
BA (Hons) Business Management and
Marketing
Placement Employer: IBM
Placement job title: Marketing Co-ordinator
The course really appealed to me because I
could spend a year in industry and I was keen
to get hands on work experience. Also, the fact
that you can specialise in a route of your
choice was very appealing.
Gaining a placement at IBM has been my best
achievement so far. This wouldnt have been
possible if the university staff had not arranged
for various workshops and events with the
many companies which I am grateful for.
If youre not sure which area of Business you
want to specialise in then this is the right course
for you as I originally wanted to do purely HRM
and studying all areas in the first year made me
realise that Marketing is the subject for me.

A graduates story...
Louise Lawrence
BA (Hons) Business Economics
Graduated 2004
I thoroughly
enjoyed my
time at NTU. I
met some
amazing people
during my three
years there and
was taught by
some really
interesting
lecturers who
are passionate
about their
subject. Rather
than being lectured at, they knew how to
engage you and, for me personally, that
made things really come to life.
I now work as a Bid Manager for a London
based Management Consultancy firm.
I learned so much at university and am
actually surprised how much of it has
relevance to my current career.
I think one of my biggest achievements
was when I was sent to South Africa last
summer with a small team of people to do
some recruitment for our London office.
I was responsible for making sure the whole
thing ran as smoothly as possible. It was a
pretty intense three days but was a huge
success.
