Rubber
Production

www.prospect.rsc.org

ubber tree is a perennial crop and the source of natural rubber.

In the early 20th century, the international tire manufacturing
companies started the commercial production of rubber.
Thus, the rubber production is considered as a major industry,
providing livelihood and income for many people. Its growth rate
is 3.3% annually.
Natural rubber is a raw material used in the manufacture of
industrial products (conveyor belts, rubber rollers, etc.), automotive
products (fan belts, radiator hoses, etc.), latex products (rubber
gloves, toys hygienic products, etc.) and adhesives. So, why invest
in rubber production?

Market

ubber is marketed as centrifuged latex, cuplumps, crepe sheets

and crumb rubber. Forty percent (40%) of the countrys rubber
production is being exported to other countries. The Philippines
top major export markets are Malaysia, China and Singapore.
The country also imports rubber, however, it can be minimized
if there will be establishments of new rubber plantation and
factories locally and so the country will not depend too much on
importing from other countries. The major users of natural rubber
are the tire and footwear industries locally and abroad.

Production Cost

he production cost, productivity and earnings vary in farms

since there are factors that affect the trees and the market.
Nevertheless, there are basic fixed costs of production and
operational activities that can be fairly projected on prevailing
conditions.
Table A shows the average cost of establishing, maintaining
and harvesting a hectare of rubber plantation.

ne-hectare rubber farm can usually yield anywhere from

0.80 to 1.20 metric tons of dry rubber per year or higher
depending on the clones used and proper management employed.
Rubber trees will normally be ready for tapping in towards the
end of the fifth year after field planting. (See Table B)

Based on the table below, 141% Return on Investment (ROI) is

expected from a hectare of rubber plantation.
A farmer needs to invest about Php 50,000 on the
establishment of rubber plantation and Php 167,000 for the
following nine years. A farmer will gain as much as Php 303,870
net income on the tenth year. (See Table C)
