MUD THERAPY

Why Mud Therapy???


The dark color of mud helps in absorbing different colors and conveying them to the body,
giving it therapeutic properties.
Also, its shape and consistency may be modified with ease, just by changing the water
content, which makes it easy to use.
A mud pack is advantageous over a cold compress (cold water therapy) as it retains the
coolness over a longer period of time. Therefore, it is recommended whenever a prolonged
cold application is required.
Mud contains Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium Bromide, Silicates, Natural Tar and organic
elements
Lastly, it is easily available and a cost effective treatment option.

After initial assessment and/or daily review with the patient the concerned centers
Naturopathy & Yoga specialist will give the mud therapy prescription of the patient to the
therapist.
The mud therapy prescription of the patient holds whether it is partial/full body application,
cold/hot application and direct/indirect application.

General Procedure & Precautions:
Therapists wear gloves to apply the mud on the patients body parts. Trim the nails and wear
the gloves.
Take the necessary mud in a good & appropriate bowl and go for application. Dont go near
the patient with the mud in a big/huge vessel.
Prepare the couch/bed in advance like putting the disposable bed spread, pillow cover, etc.
before the patient entering the room. Dont do all these by keeping the patient inside the
therapy room.
The best position for taking mud therapy is lying.
Depends on the next day patient strength for mud therapy, soak the necessary amount of dry
mud in water 1 day in advance.
In case of mud pack application, cut the necessary cloth in appropriate size and store it in the
cupboard at least 1 week in advance.
Each time get patients feedback.
Clinical conditions/feedback/any issues should escalate to concerned physician/CMO.

Abdominal Pack
Length: 10-12 inches
Width: 6-8 inches

Height: to 1 inch
Eye Pack
Length: 6-8 inches
Width: 2-3 inches
Height: 1/2 inch

Before applying the mud on patients body check the mud once for all regarding any hard
particles, infectious agents, insects, stones, sticks, etc. are not present.
Procedure of Mud Application:
1. Before starting the mud application, explain the nature of mud which you are going to apply
like hot/cold and on which place of the body you are going to apply.
2. Depends on the body area of application, instructs the patient to undress appropriately and
then take the mud and apply it firmly on the patients body.
3. The mud application should be evenly coated on the body part.
4. The thickness of the mud coating is medium.
5. The mud should be semi-solid in nature but not watery or highly solid.
Contra-Indications of Mud Therapy:
Active bleeding
Open wounds
Chronic feverish conditions
All infectious diseases during contagious period
Venereal diseases in contagious state
General debility
Pregnancy
