A Note From The Pastor

At our recent preacher gathering with Bishop Huie, one of the recurring
themes was fear. When I watch the news or read the paper there seems to
be a tremendous amount of fear on every front. The question that the good
news of Gods grace puts before us is: Who will separate you from the love
of Christ? What are you afraid of?
Are you afraid that some weakness you have could separate you from the
love of Christ? It cant.
Are you afraid that your inadequacies could separate you from the love of
Christ? They cant.
Difficult marriage, loneliness, anxiety about the childrens future? They
cant.
Poor self-image? It cant.
Economic hardship, racial hatred, political fighting? They cant.
Rejection by loved ones or the suffering of loved ones? They cant.
The gospel of grace tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of
God, made real in Jesus.
Im convinced that nothing can separate us from Gods love in Christ Jesus our
Lord: not death or life, not angels or rulers, not present things or future things, not
powers or height or depth, or any other thing that is created.
Romans 8:38-39

Brennan Manning writes: Everything else will pass away. Faith will become vision, hope will become possession, but
the love of Jesus Christ that is stronger than death endures forever.
My prayer for you is that you will not let fear win out over Gods love for you.
Peace,

A Note From The Associate Pastor

Keep on praying and guard your prayers
with thanksgiving.
~ Colossians 4:2 CEB

Ignatian Examen
1. Become aware of Gods presence
2. Review the day with gratitude
3. Pay attention to your emotions
4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it
5. Look toward tomorrow

Our culture does not leave much time for reflection. For most of us, our days are filled with what can adequately be described simply as busyness. Some of the time this busyness is very important; its related to our jobs, children, family,
friends, and passions. Its a very good busy. However, recently I have been acutely aware that my body and mind need
time away from the busyness. Humans were not created to simply go go go. I think this is one of the reasons God commands us to pray.
One of my favorite tools for prayer comes from a 15th century saint named Ignatius of Loyola. His examen (found above)
is a series of steps that lead us through a process of prayer that pays careful attention to our daily experiences. It urges us
to be honest with ourselves and deal with our emotions, rather than ignore them. I would urge you to give it a try and see
the ways God will bless you as you intentionally spend time in Gods presence.
Blessings,

award-winning basketball players, and its your chance to get to
know these supermen! Youll feel super too, as a part of FUMCs
Adopt-a-SFA Mens Basketball Adoption Program.
This is the third year that our church has adopted the SFA mens

support for players and pray for them. Leon Hallman once again
heads the adoption process, one of the most successful Outreach Programs of FUMC. Coach Brad Underwood, a member

cared for and at home in Nacogdoches.
If youd like to be paired with two of the players, there are sign-in
sheets in the hall by the sanctuary. You can also order the purple FUMC basketball T-shirts. Make reservations for dinner with your adopted basketball players for Monday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in the FUMC Family Life Center. Please consider
