Gregorio C. Brillantes
Gregorio C. Brillantes, a Palanca Award Hall of Famer and a multi-awarded fiction writer, is one of
the Philippines' most popular writers in English.Known for his sophisticated and elegant style, he has been
compared to James Joyce. He often writes about individuals under thirty, adolescent or post adolescent ones who
struggle with alienation from family, society and from themselves. His earlier collection of short stories earned
him the title of the "Catholic Writer". But elements of the fantastic also come in his works. In the 2006
Graphic/Fiction Awards, the main local sponsor of the contest, specialty book shop Fully Booked, acknowledged
Brillantes as one of the godfathers of fantastic literature in English by naming the first category the Gregorio C.
Brillantes Prize for Prose. Brillantes is a native of Camiling, Tarlac. He obtained his Litt. B. degree in the Ateneo
de Manila University. He has edited Sunburst, The Manila Review, Focus, Asia-Philippines Leader and
the Philippines Free Press. Among his published collections of short stories are: The Distance to Andromeda and
Other Stories, The Apollo Centennial, Help, and On a Clear Day in November Shortly Before the
Millennium, Stories for a Quarter Century. He also has published collections of essays: Looking for Rizal in
Madrid, Chronicles of Interesting Times, and The Cardinal's Sins, the General's Cross, the Martyr's Testimony
and other Affirmations.

Summary

Dr.Lazaro has a strong and vigorous belief and faith in God. His name Lazaro is from Lazarus a biblical
name. Dr.Lazaro wife and his son is a member of the parish church their house has its own Sacred Heart. The
Lightens their family Dr.Lazaro has a strong Faith to God also ben. Ben was read a book specially the bible. After
that Dr.Lazaro loss his faith to God because of the encounter as a doctor because they observe people under a
medical care are hopeless and some of people experiencing pain and another incident happened to Dr.Lazaro to
loss his faith to God when he lose his first son because his son committed suicide in a boarding house. His wrist
slashed and he did nothing to save his sons life his little as a doctor useless.
Dr.Lazaro assign in a provincial hospital and they encounter Pedro Esteban. Pedro Esteban try to called
Dr.Lazaro because his Child have a disease they cant go to the hospital because of the one week old baby her
skin is bluish and having a high fever and Dr.Lazaro said Yes, Ill go to your house. After that the driver was
left his wife and said Ben can drive you. Then they go to the house of Pedro Esteban. While driving they talked
to each other. Dr.Lazaro want Ben to be a City Doctor. And they want Ben to work on a big hospital in city but
Ben dont like to become a doctor because Ben want to be a Priest to serve God.
After the long driving they found the station and they saw Pedro Esteban. They walk to dike and they ride in a
boat about one minute. They saw a house of Teban and the dog bark. Dr.Lazaro checkup the child. The child has
hopeless then ben go to child. He get an oil in a coconut shell and he said In the name of the father, the child and
the holy spirit. Amen. After that they go home and Dr.Lazaro are the one who driving and Dr.Lazaro said that
You Baptized the child is a fully Christian. Ben belief that if the child died without a baptismal they cannot go to
heaven and child became a tyanak. They got home and Dr.lazaro tap the shoulder of ben it means he amazed to
ben

Setting
Darkness
The story happened late at night the road going to the gas station was dark and the story was set in darkness.

Character:
Dr. Lazaro - Protagonist country doctor and he is not interesting to his profession and clients.
Ben Lazaro Want to become a priest and always helpful and Ben is Fervent faith could influence his father.
D. Larazos Wife Latent behavior (Flat Character).

Pedro Esteban and his family Flat Characters, Strong Believer and need assistants of Pedro to his new-born
child.

Plot
The main plot is about Dr. Lazaro who want his son be doctor. But Ben they want to become priest to
serve God and Dr. Lazaro lost his faith because his profession after the doctor witness Ben baptize an ill child. Dr
Lazaro questions his lack of faith and look up to God once again.

Theme
For me the theme of the story is when Dr. Lazaro doubted his faith because of certain event happen. When
he become a doctor and when his first son died.

Message
Time is the most important things that you can give in your family and love ones. Spend your time to
them because the memory is the one can be treasures through your life.
Faith is a value that can give us a good character, if only Dr. Lazaro have a supreme being and the most
powerful, He will not doubt himself to be a good doctor that can be help others.
Love,one of the most shortest but bigger in meaning if Dr. Lazaro love his profession he will become a
good example to all people and for individual. And doing a good is not about money but it is about a willingness
of our heart.
This is three important values and this is three values can building block to become a good person
