the farmer. The best way to do this is through
supervised orientation periods and through a
strict set of rules that your children can (and
must) learn by heart.
• Treat all animals with fearful respect —
Like a gun, all animals should be considered
“loaded,” i.e. dangerous. Even the most tame

children should be taught that every animal
has the capacity to injure or even kill them
whether it intends to or not. A friendly and
tame cow may not mean any harm to your
youngster, but she still outweighs the little
one by about 1,000 pounds.

be taught never to run, jump, scream or play
around animals. Ultimately, the sight of a
wandering heifer or a curious horse should be
enough to stop even your most rambunctious
toddler dead in his tracks.
• Never sneak up on livestock — Teach your
children to always signal their approach to
livestock. A spooked cow may just run away
at the sight of your kids, or it may attack.
Letting the herd know that you’re there is one
of the first steps in working safely with
livestock, so make sure your kids know this
important step.
• Use a soothing voice — Excited children
have a tendency to use their excited voices.
Most farm animals, however, don’t react well
to excited voices. Teach your kids to talk
slowly and softly and to avoid yelling. Any
sudden stimuli can frighten a jittery cow, so
teach your children to be as soothing as
possible in every aspect of their presence,
including the way they walk, move and
speak.
• Never approach animals without adult
supervision — Most farm incidents that
involve child injury happen because of a lack
of adult supervision. Your child’s chances of
surviving an injury increase dramatically if
you’re there to care for them afterward. A
child alone in a barn has much less of a
chance of surviving a kick or mauling by an
old cow. Teach your little ones to never
approach farm animals alone and to get an
adult before trying to “help” livestock in any
way.

sedentary nature of livestock such as cattle lull ranch owners into false senses of security.
Their docility and easily-frightened demeanor, however, only obscures the real truth: that
they are large and powerful creatures, sometimes weighing in excess of 1,500 pounds, and
when they set their minds to do something, there is little that can stand in the way.
Many livestock handlers learn at an early age the value of having a tall fence somewhere
nearby. An excited climb over a corral is a typical sight when working in cattle lots, and
there’s not a rancher worth his salt that hasn’t been within about five inches of having an old
heifer readjust the way he sits on a toilet.
Animals are involved in about 17 percent of all farm injuries, according to that National Ag
Safety Database. A study by the organization ranks beef cattle farms second and dairy farms
third in the number of injuries per workhour among agricultural enterprises.
Part of the reason cattle are so volatile has to do with their vision. Although humans, like all
