About Hyderabad
Hyderabad is the capital city of the state of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh of South India.
Located on the Deccan Plateau, Hyderabad is the fifth largest city of India. The 400 year old
city is located on the banks of the River Musi.
Hyderabad was founded by Muhammad Quli Qutab Shah, the fifth sovereign of the Qutab
Shahi dynasty, in the year 1591. Initially, Golconda was the capital of the Qutab Shahi dynasty,
who ruled over Deccan during the period 1512 1687.
The name Hyderabad literally means city of Hyder since it was named after Queen Hyder
Mahal, wife of King Qutab Shah. With the help of Iranian architects, Hyderabad was erected in a
grid format. The city was modeled on the city of Isfahan of Iran. With the construction of
Hyderabad city, it became the capital city of Qutb Shahi rulers.
The cultural facet of Hyderabad is distinctly different from the Telugu culture of the rest of
Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad has a rich Hyderabadi culture of its own, a blend of Persian and
Telugu cultures, which flourished under the reign of the Qutab Shahis.
Hyderabad is also known as the City of Nizams since it was ruled for a long time by the
Nizams. The Nizams of Hyderabad were famous as the wealthiest royals in the history of India.
Today, Hyderabad is one of the leading centres of information technology. The emerging
Biotech and IT industries have given the city a global platform. The thriving tourism and IT
industries have brought Marriott, Novotel and Taj, the giants in the hospitality industry, to this
metropolis.
Tourists who visit Hyderabad can witness the blend of ancestral heritage and modern
technology. The deep rooted cultural history of Hyderabad is evident from its monuments,
mosques, temples, varied art forms and crafts. The monuments, minarets and mosques of
Hyderabad with its impressive architectural style attract visitors.
Charminar, Jama Masjid, Golconda Fort, Salarjung Museum, Osmania University, Paigah
Tombs, Qutub Shahi Tombs, Raymond Tomb, Birla Mandir, Hussain Sagar, Ramoji Film City,
etc. are some of the popular attractions of the city of Hyderabad.
Hyderabad also celebrates the Deccan Festival is organised by the Department of Tourism,
Andhra Pradesh, every year on 25th February. This five-day long festival reflects the culture
and highlights Hyderabad's arts, crafts, culture and the famous Nawabi cuisine.
The pulsating nightlife of Hyderabad is also a major tourist attraction. The bylanes of the
Charminar and the authentic Hyderabadi and Andhra cuisine has made Hyderabad a haven for
shopaholics and foodies. The best time to visit Hyderabad is October to March.
Page 2/15

Hyderabad can be reached from destinations around the country by air, rail and road. There are
two International Airports in Hyderabad, Hyderabad International Airport; Rajiv Gandhi
International Terminal and a domestic terminal; N T Rama Rao Domestic Terminal, connected
with almost all major cities of India and the world.
Secunderabad and Nampalli Railway stations are well connected to all major cities.
The city is also well connected by buses run by the state government and other private
operators to regions within the state as well as neighbouring states.

Featured review about Hyderabad

Perfect place for people fond of food and travelling
"Travellers should visit the destination for a must because its a must to have place on your Top
100 places to visit before you die. Hyderabad has national heritage, modern based engineered
architectures, king-sized malls, unmatched Delicious Biryani, zoos, parks and a many more
things.
Some places to must visit here are:
1)Golconda Fort
2)Charminar
3)Bawarchi(Restaurant famous for its biryani)
4)Nehru Zoological Park
5)Hussain Sagar Lake
6)Lumbini Park
7)NTR Garden
8)Inorbit Mall
Starting with Golconda Fort, it's a place which is of National Heritage for our country. The most
different things I found here is to visit such a great heritage and Fort, the entry fee here is only 5
rupees(only for Indians, without cameras). And apart from that, if you look for a guide who will
explain you some good to hear stories about the fort with no truth in it, then it will cost 600-800
rupees(price varies on number of people for each guide). So coming to Golconda Fort, its an
Page 3/15

example of beauty as well as great civil engineering. Yes, you heard it right, the kind of natural
technology and engineering implemented here is almost for today's civil engineers to even think
of. One echo system for alert sound is being implemented here. One sound for echo is setup at
the entrance. Another sound of it is being implemented at King's room which is about 500 feet
above the entrance. The reason for echo sound is for alert whenever any enemy will come,
then King will be alerted and he will escape from the Fort through a secret way which will take
him out to Charminar, about 20 kms away from Golconda. This is one of the engineering
implementation at Golconda. Apart from it, a numerous designs are done like natural AC,
cooling water from dry sand, both dargah and temple at a place.
One more place which everybody will love to go is Hussain Sagar Lake. Its near park called
Lumbini, which is a nice place to hangout for children's and adults also.
In the middle of lake there is small port where the Hussain Statue is present. To go to the statue
at the port, small boats are there which costs you about 50 rupees for that. Apart from that, if
you just want to have a thrill adventure in lake then even speed boat and jetski is there for your
ride. And yes, for jetski obviously some rules and requirements are there like license. So most
of the people don't get often the luxury to go through jetski. And if you have want to have a
luxurious experience at lake, then cruise is also there which takes about 1. 5 hours to complete
the trip. Also for adventure, at Lumbini park, some sort of Bungee Jumping is there which is a
great fun for thrill liking people.
NearBy Lumbini Park, there is a place called Birla Mandir which is another great place to go
once. The whole temple is made of pure white marble and gives a feeling of peace to go there.
Now coming to Local Foods and Shopping, nothing is better than a full plate Biryani at
BAWARCHI, travelling to Hyderabad is incomplete without this place. It also contains some
great collection of North Indian Foods like Chole Bhature, Chat, Thali but famous only for
Biryani. Some other places famous for their Biryanis are Paradise, Hyderabad House. And if
you are a lover of pastries and Bakery Biscuits then go to India's no. 1 store Karachi Bakery.
For shopping, when sale season comes then malls like GVk, Inorbit are well and good. But if
you want to have non-branded, local market shopping then go to Sindh Colony.
Coming to Inorbit mall, it can be said as one of the most modern and well engineered place and
a great place to come with family and enjoy. Consists of everything from top to bottom. Branded
showrooms, foodCourt, PVR Cinemas, Multi Cuisine Open Air Restaurant, Play House(a great
place to spend time), ATMS etc.
And for software engineers, its a mecca. I am not taking it to any career perspective or
something but really place like MindSpace is one of its own. The whole hi-tech city is built by
cutting a mountain and making it into an ecospace for technology and Nature.
The kind of activities which kept me busy were the Great National Heritage of our country,
seeking fun and adventure, experimenting the great food speciality of the city and interaction
Page 4/15

with the people out there. I stayed there for 2 months and despite being not a South Indian I
never faced any language or communication problem. The local people there are having a most
welcoming nature and cared for us like their own family member.
My advice to travellers will be look for Cabs while travelling as Metros are recently started and
not properly routed yet. Local trains can be a good option or you can use local city buses if you
are comfortable enough. If you have limited money budget for travelling then please be aware
of shopping at Malls as it may be a great money spender for you.
Have a nice trip to all the readers and enjoy the place to the fullest." - Saurabh Joshi,

Hot Hot Hyderabad!

"If you are crazy about history, then you must have a glance of heritage of Qutb shahi and
Nizam eras. There many eye catching museums:
(1)Salar Jung Museum (3rd largest museum in India housing the biggest one man collection of
antiques in the world)
(2)The Nizams Museum
(3)AP State Museum
(4)National History Museum
Among the museums we visited, Salarjung museum is the best.
And if you are fun loving, you cant miss Ramoji Film City, which is a famous film studios in
South Asia. It has got few thrill rides, restaurant's and many replicas of world famous structures
and places (Almost it'll be like a world tour!)
Well,if you are a non-vegetarian, you cant afford to miss a Hyderabadi-DUM BIRYANI(So hot
and yummy)."Hotel paradise" is famous for it.
There are many tourist spots like
Snow world (you can experience snow in summer!),
NTR Gardens,
Charminar(One of the finest examples of Qutb shahi architecture located at the heart of old
city),
Birla Mandir(Built on a 280 feet hillock called Naubath pahad where Lord Venkateshwara
resides and one of the most important religious place in India),
Qutub shahi tomb,
Chaumahalla Palace(Where the royal visitors were entertained here!),Lumbini park,
Mecca Masjid(Oldest mosques in Hyderabad),
Golconda fort(Capital of ancient kingdom of Golconda, famous for mines that have produced
the world's most famous and coveted gems, including The hope diamond, Idol's eye, Kohinoor
diamond and Darya-i-Noor).
And if you are gem loving, then you are at the right spot! Because you get some of the World's
purest gems in Hyderabad. You can even visit Karachi bakery which is famous for its bakery
Page 5/15

products(It has unbelievable range of bakery products).

You can travel by train since it is Comfortable and cheapest of all. Volvo's and air travel are
even better depending upon your budget. It is better to get tagged with some local trip agencies
since it will be cheap and you will be able to cover more no. of places in least time.
Finally, Please carry light clothes(I mean not heavy clothes like sweater, jackets, etc),do carry
umbrella, moisturisers, Drinking water(very much essential under the scorching sun) and get an
air conditioned room as much as possible else you cant bear the heat." - Chandan

My Experience in Hydrabad,
"I visited Hydrabad with my wife in February. It was quite hot there. The South Indian dishes are
really good, but for North Indians like us it is difficult to continue for long. A lot of places were
there where one can visit. The must visit places are . 1.Salurjung Meuseam,2.Golkunda Fort
3.Hussain Sagar Lake and of course 4. The Charminar. People in Hydrabad is very friendly.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: In Hydrabad there is a lot of good restaurants of multi cuisine.
Since people of Andhra Pradesh like we Bengolis, die for Rice and spicy food, we enjoyed it.
You may visit the Market around Charminar where you can find brass murals, bangles of all
kind, Pearls etc. For handicraft items you may visit the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh show room for
handicrafts 'Lepakshi'
Activities & things to do: The lazer show near Hussain sagar lake is a great experience.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Hydrabad is well connected by road , rail and air
to all major cities of India." - Pradyoth Chakraborty, Kolkata, May 17, 2011
