1. What are the health needs of school-age* children in the Philippines?
2. What are the current interventions from the public and private sector that addresses these
concerns?

Questions/Instructions Regarding Nutrition Concerns
1. Among school-age children,
1.1 What is the prevalence of malnutrition (i.e., underweight, stunting, wasting and over
weight) in the Philippines? Which are the top 3 regions in the Philippines with the
above forms of malnutrition? What is the prevalence of malnutrition by place of
residence and wealth quintile in the Philippines? Please refer to 2013 FNRI-NNS
data.
1.2 What is the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies (i.e., vitamin A, iron, iodine, zinc)
in the Philippines? Which top 3 regions have the highest prevalence of micronutrient
deficiencies? What is prevalence of anemia by wealth quintile index?
2. What is the public health significance of your data? Please refer to cut-off values for public
health significance, WHO 1995 & WHO 2001
3. How does malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency affect the academic performance and
learning ability of school age children? Please cite local studies (if available) to support your
answer.
4. What are the existing government interventions and NGO efforts to address malnutrition among
school age children? Please compare with previous projects or programs implemented. How
are they different? What are the lessons learned from previous mediations? Refer to DOH &
DepEd programs or projects
5. Are nutrition interventions implemented in schools effective? Give examples in both local and
international settings? Look for local and international (Asian preferably) studies.
6. What subjects in school incorporate nutrition education? Describe extent of coverage in terms
of time allotted for the subject and topics taken up. Possible source: DepEd
7. Are public schools equipped to monitor nutritional status of school-age children? Are annual
examinations and anthropometric monitoring done in these schools? Possible sources: DepEd
and DOH
8. What are the food choices offered by school canteens in public schools? Are school canteens
supervised by or consulted with nutritionists for appropriateness of food served? Look for local
studies.
9. What do school-age children eat in school (i.e., baon, school canteen fare, street food)? Look
for local studies on the top ten foods consumed by school-age children.
10. Look for local studies on KAP of school-age children related to nutrition (i.e., eating patterns,
food beliefs, customs).
