Glass

Glass is mixture of several compound usually metallic silicates.

Properties of glasses.
1.It absorbs,refracts and transmits light.
2.It can take a high polish
3.It is available in beautiful colours.
4.It is extremely brittle.
5.It is not affected by air or water.
6.It is transparent.
7.It may have several different variety of properties like clear, colorless, coloured etc.
8.Its a good insulator.
9.It is not affected by chemical agents.

Types of glasses
1.Fibre glass:It consists of minute glass rods.It is soft to touch and
flexible in nature. It does not absorb water and fire proof.

2. foam glass.: The foam glass floats in water and it can be cut
like wood. It is fire proof, rigid and an excellent heat insulator..It is
used in air-conditioning and refrigeration industries.

3.Glass bricks:Glass blocks are available in various sizes. They are

eay to clean and hence they can be well maintained. They are
excellent in light transmission.they provide very good insulation
against cold,heat and noise

4.Perforated glass: in this type of glass perforations are made in

sheet glass with the help of rollers. It is used in ventilators.

5. Structural glass:These are in the form of glass squares which

are used in steel frames. These collect light and project it on the
darker side. These bricks can also be used as light structural
members also.
They are used in partitions, ceiling lights etc.

6.wired glass:(wire mesh glass):in this type,steel wire mesh is

placed in glass during manufacture. If this glass breaks, pieces of
glass are held by wire in position.this glass is also fire
resistant. The wired glass is used for roofs, skylights, fire resistinf
doors and windows etc.

7.Float glass :is a sheet of glass made by floating molten glass on a bed of molten
metal. This method gives the sheet uniform thickness and very flat surfaces. Modern
windows are made from float glass.

Key Properties

High degree of light transmission

Ability to be produced in a range of colours

Good chmical resistance

8.Toughened or tempered glass is a type of safety glass processed by

controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with
normal glass. Such glass, when broken, crumble into small granular pieces
instead of splintering. As a result of its safety and strength, toughened glass is
used in a variety of demanding applications, including passenger
vehicle windows, shower doors, architectural glass doors and tables, refrigerator
trays, mobile screen protectors, as a component of bulletproof glass, for diving
masks, and various types of plates and cookware.

9.Ribbed glass: Glass with ribs or corrugations.
