Edge's Top 100 Games to Play Today

ForEdgemagazine'shistoric200thissuealistwascreatedwhichcontainedwhatEdgebelievestobethe100bestgamestoplay
today.Sincetheirlistwasassembledin2009,it'snowalittleoutdatedinmyeyes,soI'vetakentoalittleselectiveediting.Games
willbereplacedwithsequels,butonlywhenthesequelisfundamentallythesamegameandistakentonowbethedefinitive
gameintheseries.LittleBigPlanet2isagoodexample,it'sfundamentallythesameasthefirstgame,butbetterinperhapsevery
way.WhenIcanbebotheredI'vealsobeenaddingalittleblurbtoeachgame.
IfI'mbreakinganyrulesbypostingthislistonGiantBombthenbyallmeansremovethislist,butsinceit'sfreelyavailableonthe
internetIdon'tseethatthere'sanythingwrongwiththis.

IthoroughlyenjoyedmytimewithOcarinaofTime,butImustconfessI
usedaguideformuchofit.

AswiththeOcarinaofTimeIhadahugeamountoftroubleinthis
gamejustworkingoutwhereIwassupposedtobeheadingnext.

MyproblemwasthatwithoutguidanceIwasspendingahugeamount
oftimeeitherwithnoideaofwheretogonextorspendinghourstrying
togetthroughthewrongdungeons.

HoweverunlikeZelda,whenIcheatedandlookedataguideIwas
kickingmyselffornothavingworkeditoutmyselfratherthanthanking
myluckystarsI'davoidedbarkingupthewrongtreeforhoursata
time.

I'llconcedethatI'mnotafanofexploringtoworkoutwheretogonext
formyself,andforthisreasonIprobablydidn'tenjoyOoTasmuchas
it'spossibleto.Neverthelessitwasstillahugelyenjoyableexperience.

yarnunlikeanyother.
Thesetpiecesarefantasticdon'tgetmewrong,butthemomentsof
thegamethatreallystandinmymemoryarethosewhenyousuddenly
comeacrosstheremainsofaresistancemember,whoseenvironment
effortlesslytellsyoueverythingyouneedtoknowabouttheirbackstory.

5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

ForthelongesttimeIsimplycouldn'tgetintoRE4.Thiswasmostlydue
toit'scontrols,whichevenatthetimefeltoutofstepwithwhere
mainstreamdesignphilosophiesweregoing.
I'mgladIstuckwithitthough,sinceafterplayingthroughits
introductionitwashardtoimaginehowitwouldevenbepossibletodo
athingsuchasshootandrunsimultaneously.Smallnigglesstayed
annoyingforthegame'slength(whyohwhydoesn'tthescreenturn
whentheWiimotereticulenearsthescreensedge?!),butthegame's
qualitymanagedtooverwhelmthese,leavingmewithoneofthe
tightestgamesI'deverplayed.

Withoutadoubtthebest2Dplatformerofalltime.It'salmost
unbelievablethatthisgamewasgivenawayfreewithSNESswhenit's
ofsuchunbelievablequality.
Lessskilledgamerssuchasmyselfwillfindthesavestatefeatureon
modernemulatorsinvaluablewithtakingonsomeofthegame'sharder
levels,buteventhenthegamestillmanagestostretchyourtwitch
reflexestotheirlimit.

Inanageofmotioncontrollers,3D,andhighdefinition,it'scrazyto
thinkthatit'sstillpossibletoseepeopleplayingTetrisontheirphones.
ThegameisperfectinwaysIcan'tevenbegintowrapmyhead
around.Itmaybeconfinedtomomentsofboredomonthetrain
nowadays,butevenhereitmanagestobefarmoreappealingthanany
otherhandheldgameeverreleased.

10. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

ItmaynotstretchyourgamingskillsinthewayotherMariogames
havebeenableto,butthere'sanirresistiblecharmtoYoshi'sIsland
that'shardtodeny.
Hatersmaydismissitasoverlychildishwithit'scrayonaestheticand
obsessionwithbabies,butforasingleshotofplatformingjoyit'sreally
hardtoturnyourbackon.

9. Halo 3

ItmaynowliveintheshadowoftheCallofDutybehemoth,butHalo
stillprovidesthequintessentialfirstpersonshooterexperienceona
console.It'stight,it'stimeless,andevenafteralltheseyearsit'sablast
todropintoacoupleofgameswithfriends.

It'sdetractorsliketoclaimtheGrandTheftAutoserieswasatitsbest
whenitdidn'ttakeitselftooseriously,butanyonewhowaswillingto
forgivethelackofjetpacksinGTA4wouldhavefoundagreatdeal
moretoenjoyinwhatisunquestionablythegreatestopenworldever
constructed.
Itmayhavefallenslightlyflatinitsthirdact,butGTA4isatitsbest
whenyousimplytakethetimetomarvelatitsworldinallitsgrimy
detail.

AllthosetimeintensivelittletasksthatcanbogdownyourJRPG

series.Finallythecasualfansamongstuscouldfocusourattentionon
thegreatersystemsatwork,anddiscoverawholeworldpreviously
obscuredbylayersofcomplexity.Somehavecalleditamisstep,others
theseries'bestentry,buteitherway,whentakenonitsownmeritsit's
stillafantasticgame.
