Overview
Chinas MTBE production capacity and output have been growing rapidly in 2009-2014. The
countrys MTBE production capacity almost doubled from 2009 to 10.96m tonnes/year as of 30 June
2014. About 3.1m tonnes of MTBE were produced in the first half of 2014, equivalent to the annual
MTBE output in 2009. The largest MTBE plant in China with a single capacity of 500,000 tonnes/
year was launched in April 2014. Changes in feedstock sources have also boosted Chinese refiners
MTBE output. The capacity expansion situation and the improvement of the quality pose a threat to
international exporters China sales market.
Data
On the demand side, the main consumer of MTBE in China is gradually switching from private
blending traders to refiners. With policies regarding oil products and circulation improving, it will be
more difficult for Chinese gasoline blending traders to survive. Spot supply of MTBE will fall sharply,
and more trades will be conducted directly between factories.
The opportunities for China export MTBE are increasing. However, due to a long period of tax
refunds, the profit in exporting for local producers is not as good as just conducting business in
China. International traders and downstream users are looking into the possibility to import MTBE
from the China market.
