ENGLISH-IN-CAMP: PROFICIENCY

Session 1 : Introduction to English-in-Camp


Activity 1 : Teacher and Student Briefing
Duration : 30 minutes
Learning Objective:
At the end of this session students are able to:
1. Familiarize themselves with the schedule of the three day two night
camp.
2. Know to basic rules of the camp.
Resources : Powerpoint
Procedure:
1. Teachers and students are gathered in two separate groups for the
briefing.
2. Provide the briefing using the PowerPoint slides.
Activity 2 : Pre-test (for students only)
Duration : 20 minutes
Resources : Handout
Procedure:
1. The pre-test is for students only.
2. Distribute Handout 1 to each student.
3. Instruct students to complete the handout without discussing with their
friends.
4. Collect the handout from each student.

Activity 3 : Ice breaking: Self Identification


Duration : 30 minutes
Resources : Post-its & Permanent Marker pen
Procedure:
1. Teachers and students sit in groups according to their schools.
2. Each student selects an adjective that describes his/her character and
introduces himself/herself using the adjective together with his/her
name: Funny Jane, Strong Abdul, Generous Amirul, Dynamic Khairul,
and Pretty Anusha.
3. Students explain to the others why he/she has selected that adjective
4. Students write the names on post-its and stick them on their T-shirt for
all to see.
Activity 4 : Ice breaking: Group Identification
Duration : 30 minutes
Resources : Manila Cards & Permanent Marker pen
Procedure:
1. Teachers and students of two schools to sit together (ten students and
two teachers in one group).
2. The members of each group discuss to select a name for their group.
3. Encourage the groups to select a name that describes the members of
the group based on their character/school location/district. Teachers
can facilitate the selection of group names.

4. Students write the names on a piece of Manila card to be placed on the


table.
5. Students prepare a group cheer and announce it to the others.
