Record Label: Victory Records
Track: Over My Head (Cable Car)
Running Time: 3 minutes 30 seconds (without copyright disclaimer and credits)
The music video I will be directing for the song will combine both narrative and
performance based elements. This is because it is typical of the rock genre and
follows Joan Lynchs theory of the 3 basic structures of a music video.
The Narrative and performance will strongly relate to the music and lyrics, this will be
accomplished by recording a live performance of the entire from several angles and
shot sizes and vocals will be related to the visuals by lip-syncing. The use of
performance and lip-syncing, various angels, including close-ups of the main artist(s)
are also typical of Goodwins theory of codes and conventions of a music video,
namely a relationship between music and visuals, relationship between lyrics and
visuals, genre specific visual style and iconography and a demand from the record
company for close-ups.
The video will combine Gows theory of central genres of music videos, the two out
of the six I will be using are: the song and dance number and the enhanced
performance. As I am having a narrative, this will elegantly fit into the enhanced
performance element of the music video and the song and dance number is
achieved by the live performance of the song.
The basic timeline of the music video will focus the performance based element on
the chorus of the song and occasional heavier vocals, while the narrative will take
place during the verses of the song. I will be shooting a live performance of the song
from several angles and shot sizes so that a full range of edits may be available. The
narrative story I will be following is based on the original artists interpretation of their
own song. The song is originally by a band called The Fray and frontman Isaac
Slade stating it is about a fight I got in with my brother, Caleb. After he graduated
high school, we drifted apart and really hadnt spoken in a long time. One day we
both decided that we needed to fight it out. Wed been friends for 20 years and when
youre only 23 years old thats a long time. So we eventually fought it out and now
hes one of my best friends. For this, I have chosen to have a fight at the
beginning, clearly showing the dispute between two brothers, having one leave the
house (representing the lead singer) and travelling to an open space to clear his
head. After several shots, he will return to home and there will be an apology acted
out, followed by a sort of party to symbolize the re-union of a friendship.
There are basic resources for a music video I will need, these include the bands
instruments (2 electric guitars, 1 bass guitar, a microphone and a drum set), a green
screen studio for special effects and backgrounds and 5-8 actors to represent the
artists and narrative characters. All the locations do not provide permission to be on
and time in a green screen studio can be booked. For actors, I will be using a local
band from JD music academy to perform the song live, the narrative characters will
have one formally dressed male, representing a good side and one rebellious male,
in typial clothes of the rock genre (skinny jeans, band t-shirts, converse shoes and
piercings or tattoos, representing the evil side. This costume choice has been done

to clearly illustrate the binary opposites on-screen, allowing viewers to clearly see a
difference in character personas.
I plan to start shooting the music video on the 16 th of October 2015, starting with the
live-performance of the song as this will require the most time and attention to obtain
the appropriate shots, angles and footage for the entire music video.
