Application of High dilution in Basic and Allied Homeopathic
Research: Glimpses of Indias Major Contributions

Abstract
The use of high dilutions are in vogue since inception of homeopathy, when Christian Samuel
Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathic system of medicine, began experimentation with
various substances of different origins, diluted and applied for therapeutic response (drug
proving) and clinical conditions (simile principle). The effects of high dilutions have been
repeatedly verified in various laboratory models, as well as in clinical practice. In addition to
homeopathy, high dilutions are also applied in isopathy, iso-endopathy, veterinary, dentistry and
agronomy etc. The basic and fundamental research is undertaken to understand basic tenants of
homeopathy, and to accept or reject the plausibility of homeopathy. A substantive work has been
done in this area by Indian scientists over past few decades. India has a history of more than five
decades of organized research, which is reflected through publications in the late 1960s. This
paper aims to provide a glimpses of work done by Indian scientists in fundamental, basic and
allied aspects of high dilution, by referring publications from 1969 till date.
Introduction
Although trained with strict academic standards, researchers have already realized that there is
a natural, poorly described and still unexplained phenomenon that involves high dilutions.i The
biomedical community remains critically skeptic to the therapeutic action of homeopathic
medicines, which are highly diluted. Such high dilutions are the preferred target of critics, as
above Avogadros limit it is assumed that no molecules remain in a solution. The term high
dilution is a relative term used for any substance subjected to serial dilution and rigorous
agitation/shaking (potentization), as in preparation of homeopathic medicines. High dilution
term is also comparable to terms like ultra-high dilutions (UHD), super dilutions, ultra dilutions
etc.
The use of high dilutions are in vogue since inception of homeopathy, when Christian Samuel
Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathic system of medicine, began experimentation with
various substances of different origins, diluted and applied for therapeutic response (drug
proving). He soon realized that these substances in diluted form may be applied to similar
clinical conditions (simile principle). This is how homeopathic system of medicine came into
existence. Since then use of high dilutions have gone beyond the clinical use. With the increasing
curiosities, constant skepticism and clinical efficacy, there has been a constant demand to study
the nature and action of high dilutions and homeopathy. The research in high dilution is also
warranted due to clinical success stories; increasing demand of homeopathic products
worldwide; lack of standardization in prescription, preparation and dissemination of medicines
etc. The fundamental questions still revolves around the mode of action of homeopathic
medicines and nature of the ultra-high dilutions.

While high dilutions defy the dose-response relationship, the clinical experiences of homeopaths
indicate that the more diluted and agitated the drugs, the more thorough and refined their
effects. The effects of high dilutions have been repeatedly verified in various laboratory models,
as well as in clinical practice. Apart from researches, many authorities and Nobel Laureates have
supported plausibility of high dilutions and homeopathy. In an interview to journal Science,
Luc Montagnier quoted that, What I can say now is that the high dilutions are right. High
dilutions of something are not nothing. They are water structures which mimic the original
molecules. In response to an article published in journal New Scientist, expressing skepticism
about homoeopathy (October 18, 1997 and December 9, 2006), Nobel Laureate Brian Josephson
expressed, The phenomenon known as the memory of water has been established experimentally
by Jacques Benveniste and others. Its validity surpasses the importance of homeopathy itself and
illustrates the narrow mindedness of the modern scientific community, which, instead of testing
these claims, rejects them beforehand.
In addition to homeopathy, high dilutions are also applied in isopathy, iso-endopathy, veterinary
and dentistry etc.1 More recently their applicability has extended to new fields, like agronomy.
This new and far-reaching realm of applications of high dilutions might be represented with a
diagram given below:

Basic, Fundamental and Allied Research
It is a human tendency to explore what is not visible to naked eyes!
To understand basic research in homeopathy, we first need to understand the areas which ignite
research questions in homeopathy. Apart from clinical success, there are few areas which are of
interest to every scientific mind such as principle of symptom similarity; universal application of
law of similars; therapeutic action of homeopathic medicines; route of action of homeopathic
medicines in human body; logic behind potentization; standardization in preparation,
prescription, preservation and dissemination of medicines; homeopathic philosophy and its

applicability in human body; pharmacological aspects of high dilutions; physico-chemical nature
of high dilutions etc.
To address such issues, clinical research alone is not sufficient. We need to go to cellular,
molecular, biological, chemical, physical and meta-physical levels to observe, prove and disprove
phenomenon associated with high dilutions and homeopathy. In such scenario, the basic and
fundamental research is undertaken to understand basic tenets of homeopathy. Basic research is
done in an ideal environment on certain models to accept or reject the plausibility of
homeopathy and its effectiveness (absolute or relative). The basic research aims at
demonstrating biological, physicochemical and allied aspects of medicines and generating stable,
replicable and reliable models for future research.

Glimpses of Contribution of Indian Researchers

Basic and Fundamental Research
The history of basic research experiment goes beyond to late 1960s and early 1970s, as reported
from published literature, but possibility of experiments done prior to this cant be ruled out.
These five decades of contributions are therefore important to learn. A substantive work has
been done in this area by Indian scientists over the time. India has a history of more than five
decades of organized research, although the institutionalized research at governments level was
started after foundation of Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) in year in
1978ii. Some of the highly acclaimed work is summarized in this paper, which is an indicative
glimpse and not exhaustive.
During 1972 DD Data and team published a work about Spectrophotometric estimation of
elemental Sulphur in homoeopathic Sulphur mother tincture and 4x dilutioniii. During 1979 SK
Dwarkanath and MM Stanley reported a study on albino rats in which they observed effect of
China on rectal temperature in ratesiv. During 1977 1981 K Chandrasekhar and team published
series of paper, based on their experimentation on rats using homeopathic remedies
Caulophyllum and Pulsatilla.v,vi,vii,viii,ix
During 1977 78, S Prasad published four papers on action of Pulsatilla on reproductive
physiologyx; on Ovaries, the Uteri and the Thyroids of Female Albino Ratsxi; on Ovary and Uterus
of Pre-Pubertal and Ovary, Uterus and Thyroid of ESTROGEN Primed Pre-Pubertal Female
Albino Ratsxii; on the Ovaries, Uteri and Thyroids of Normally Cycling Recipientsxiii and on Rat
Ovary, Uterus and Thyroid.xiv
Dr. Jussal and team started experimenting on high dilutions and its homeopathic application in
as early as 1980s. There are couple of studies that were published during this time by them, e.g.
Dielectric dispersion of weak alcoholic solutions of some drugs at high frequencies using time
domain spectroscopyxv, Physical effects on the suspending Medium by compounds in
Asymptotically infinite dilutionsxvi, Effects of logarithmic serial dilutions of arsenicum album
(As2O3) on the excitability of the sciatic nerve of frog xvii, Biophysical, Biochemical and Biological
study of homoeopathic medicinexviii, Effect of ultradilutions on neurotransmitter/enzymesxix,
Effects of Nux Vomica and Agaricus Muscarius on the Neuronal Activity in Ratsxx etc. The studies
by Jussal et al put forth the viable existence of the high dilutions.

Dr. Anisur Rahman Khuda-Bukhsh, Prof. Emeritus, University of Kalyani, West Bengal, India has
been involved in undertaking a substantive work towards understanding the extract of
medicines, their nature and application of highly diluted homeopathic medicines on various
models especially cancer cell lines. Dr. Bukhsh proposed the famous Gene Regulatory
Hypothesis, more than two decades back, to put forth the probable pathway of action of
homeopathic medicines. Since then many research publications have been published to support
this hypothesis. Dr. Bukhsh has published more than 100 peer reviewed publication in various
national and international journals of repute. Some of his studies are indexed in, Compendium of
Abstracts of Studies on extracts, homeopathy and high dilution published by Prof. Anisur Rahman
Khuda-Bukhsh et alxxi. A quick glimpse of conclusions of some of his work can be summarized
as:

Much progress has been made in understanding the molecular mechanism in the light of
the gene regulatory hypothesis that can explain the action of the homeopathic high
dilutions in all living organisms, both in higher and lower animals as well as in plants. The
present review focuses mainly on research in support of the gene regulatory hypothesis,
and mention has been made of some relevant physical and biological aspects at cellular
and molecular levels.xxii

Overall results validate anti-cancer potential of Conium and provide support for its use in
traditional systems of medicine.xxiii

The anticancer efficacy of an ethanolic extract of Condurango for treating BaP-induced

lung cancer in rats lends support for its use in various traditional systems of medicine. xxiv

Condurango 30C could trigger epigenetic modification in lung cancer via modulation of
DNA hypermethylation.xxv

Results indicate that action of the potentized drugs was more than placebo and these
ultra-highly diluted drugs acted primarily through modulation of gene expression.xxvi

Thuja 30C ameliorates BaP-induced toxicity, stress and DNA damage in perfused lung cells
of mice and it apparently has no effect on normal lung cells.xxvii

Thus, the highly-diluted, dynamized homeopathic remedies Lycopodium 5C and 15C

demonstrated their capabilities to induce apoptosis in cancer cells, signifying their possible
use as supportive medicines in cancer therapy.xxviii

Ars Alb 30C ameliorated arsenic toxicity and DNA damage, validating efficacy of ultrahighly diluted remedies used in homeopathy.xxix

Dr. N. C. Sukul, Department of Zoology, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal,

India has also contributed a good number of studies in basic, fundamental and applied aspects of
high dilutions. Dr. Sukul and team has contributed to basic and fundamental research in
homeopathy to strengthen its roots. The team is constantly involved in bringing many aspects of
understanding the mode of action of high dilutions on biological system. Dr Sukul et al have
proposed the global water molecular network as the channel through which high dilutions

transfer therapeutic information to a biological system. His latest publication in IJHDR proposes
the action of high dilutions through capillary systemxxx. Some of the acclaimed studies by Sukul
et al are Altered solution structure of alcoholic medium of potentized Nux vomica underlies its
antialcoholic effectxxxi; Reduction of alcohol induced sleep time in albino mice by potentized Nux
vomica prepared with 90% ethanolxxxii; Potentized Mercuric chloride and Mercuric iodide
enhance -amylase activity in vitroxxxiii; Haloperidol-induced catalepsy in mice and rats
suppressed by orally pre-administered potentized Agaricusxxxiv; Dose-dependent suppression of
haloperidol-induced catalepsy by potentized Agaricus muscariusxxxv etc. Dr. Sukul et al have
many more studies to their credit.
Apart from series of study, many researchers have contributed many important research works
to homeopathy. For example, CR Patil and team have shown the immunomodulatory activity of
Rhus toxidendron in experiemental rats.xxxvi, xxxvii, xxxviii
In year 2010, the whole homeopathic fraternity got a long awaited thesis to prove the existence
of homeopathy at nano domain level, when Prof. PS Chikrammane and team published one of
this highly acclaimed papers on nano-particlesxxxix. The team showed that nano particles are
presented even at dilution more than Avogadros limit, which may be one the mode of actions of
homeopathic medicine in human beings. The article is one of the highly accessed and cited
papers globally. Prof. PS Chikrammane and team further took the experiments, and recently
(2014) published another article, Why Extreme Dilutions Reach Non-zero Asymptotes: A
Nanoparticulate Hypothesis Based on Froth Flotationxl
In the meantime, Dr. T Maity and team form Bengal Engineering and Science University, India
put forth another hypothesis that high dilutions have a particular, unique dielectric dispersionxli.
More recently, Dr. Gaurishankar Sa, Professor, Division of Molecular Medicine, Bose Institute,
India undertook experiments at his own level, as well as in collaboration with CCRH, India and
published his work which shows that homeopathic medicines have anti-cancer properties and
they act through certain genetic pathways. He has published three studies in series viz

Veterinary Research
Use of homeopathy and high dilutions for veterinary ailments goes back to Hahnemannian era.
Since inception, veterinary usage of homeopathy has been successful, cost effective and safe. In
the past few decades this usage has been increased. Below are some of the glimpses of work
done by Indian scientists and clinicians in this area:
Dr. CH Day reported use of homeopathy for control of stillbirths in pigs in 1984xlv. During 1990s
M Nandi and group showed the dose-dependent effect of homopathic medicines on serum lipid
concentration in chickens, which was published in British Homeopathic Journalxlvi.
It is worth mentioning here the contributions of Dr. J. P. Varshney and team. Dr. Varshney is
Senior Consultant (Veterinary Medicine), Gujarat; formerly at Indian Veterinary Research
Institute, India, has been working on use of homeopathic medicines in various ailments of
animals. Dr. Varshney and team have published several papers in journals of national and
international repute. Some of their papers are:

Agronomy Research
Since few decades, the realm of application of high dilution has been increased. High dilution are
now extensively used in agronomy too. Their use has been observed to increase the yield and
decrease the pathogenicity of diseases. India has a long back history of use of high dilutions in
agronomy. The reported literature goes back to as early in 1970s. Some of the reference of
reported literature may be summarized below:

Research Updates Homeopathy

The road ahead
Research in high dilution and homeopathy has a long way to go. There are many areas in which
we need extensive, state-of-art research to establish the plausibility of homeopathy, and that is
only possible when research is supported from every aspect. Homeopathy in India is supported
at both individual and government level. Indian scientists and researchers have played an
important role in supporting homeopathy from scientific point of view. The whole world is now
seeing India as an emerging global leader in homeopathy. India has also being involved in the
international cooperation and liaison when it comes to research in homeopathy. The need of
hour is to undertake more number of rigorous studies both at national as well as international
level, by means of mutual collaborations, to establish the global acceptability of homeopathy.
