Linear Inequality in Two Variables

Plotting a Straight line
(a) Let us take the equation 2x + 3y = 6
(b) On putting x = 0, we get 3y = 6, i.e.y = 2

A point on the line is (0, 2)

(c) Further putting y = 0, we get 2x = 6 x = 3

Another point on the line is (3, 0)

Plotting an Inequality
Let us consider the linear inequality
2x + 3y 6

(1)

We first plot the equality

2x + 3y = 6 (2)
(a) Putting x = 0, i.e. 0 + 3y = 6 3y = 6 y = 2
A point on the line is (0, 2)
(b) Putting (y = 0)

2x + 0 6
2x = 6 x = 3

Another point on the line is (3, 0)

Further considering the equation (1). We take any points on the
either side of the line. If points satisfy the given equation, then
we shade that region in which point lie.
However, if set of points does not satisfy the given equation,
then we shade the region where points do not lie.
Note: We have drawn the bold line, as points on the line also
represent the solution of given inequality. Thus, > or <
inequality is represented by a bold line.
Let us take testing point (0, 0) from equation (1)
2.0 + 3.0 > 6
0 > 6 which is not true
Thus, we shade the region where points (0, 0) do not lie.
Note: For lines passing through origin, the testing points are taken as (1, 0), (0, 1), (1, 0), (0, 1) generally,
(1, 0) is taken

(ii) When x is an integer, the solutions of the given inequality are

Let x be the smaller of the two consecutive even positive integers. Then, the other even integer is x + 2.

We have x 2 . Converting the inequation into equation, we obtain x = 2. Clearly, it is a

line parallel to y - axis at a distance of 2 units from it. This line divides the xy - plane
into two parts viz. one part on the LHS of x = 2 and the other on its RHS. We find that
the point (0,0) does not satisfy the inequationx> 2. so, the region represented by the given
equation is the shaded region shown in fig. The shaded region is the required solution set
of the given inequation.

15.

We have y< 3.Converting the given inequation into equation we obtain y = 3.

Clearly, it is a line parallel to x - axis at a distance of 3 units below it. The line y = 3
divides the xy-plane into two regions one below it and the other above it. Consider the
point O (0,0). We find that (0,0) does not satisfy the inequation y < 3. So, the region
represented by the given inequation is the region not containing the origin as show in
fig. Clearly, it is solution set of the given inequation.

19.

We draw the graph of lines

x + 2y = 8 and 2x + y = 8
Let us take an inequality x + 2y< 8,
We take any point say (0, 0), then equality becomes
0+20<8
i.e. 0 < 8 which is true
Hence, we shade the region where point (0, 0) lies,
For another inequality 2x + y< 8
We take point (1, 1), then inequality becomes
2+1<8
3 < 8 which is true
Hence, we shade the region where point (1, 1) lie.
Since x 0, y 0, every point in the shaded
region. The first quadrant represents a solution of
the given system of inequalities.
Hence, doubly shaded region is the common
solution of given inequalities.

We first plot the equality of both equations (1)

and (2)
For equation x + y = 5
Putting x = 0, y = 5
A point on the line is (0, 5)
Putting y = 0, x = 5
Another point on the line is (5, 0)
For equation x + y = 5
Putting x = 0, y = 5
A point on the line is (0, 5)
Putting y = 0 x = 5
Another point on the line is (5, 0)
For equation (1), i.e.x + y 5
Let us take any point say (0, 0), then inequality
becomes
0 + 0 5 which is not true
Thus, we shade the region where (0, 0) does not lie.For equation (2), i.e. x + y 5
Let us take any point say (0, 0) then inequality becomes, 0 5 which is not true.
Thus, we shade the region where point (0, 0) does not lie.
There is no common shaded region, i.e. no feasible region hence there is no common solution of given inequalities.

21.

Converting the inequations into equations, we obtain

x y 5 , 4x y 4 , x 5 y 5 , x 4 , y 3

Region represented by x y 5 : The line x + y = 5 meets the coordinates axes at A (5, 0) and B (5, 0)
respectively. Join these points by a thick line. Clearly (0, 0) satisfies the inequality x y 5 . So, the portion
containing the origin represents the solution set of the inequation x y 5 .
Region Represented by 4 x y 4 : The line 4x + y = 4 meets the coordinate axes at A1 (1, 0) and B1(0, 4)
respectively. Join these points by a thick line. Clearly, (0,0) does not satisfy the inequation 4 x y 4 .
Region Represented by x 5 y 5 : The line x 5 y 5 meets the coordinate axes at A2 (5, 0) and B2(0, 1)
respectively. Join these two points by a thick line. We find that (0, 0) does not satisfy the inequation x 5 y 5 .
So, the portion not containing the origin is represented by the given inequation.
Region Represented by x 4 ; Clearly, x = 4 is a line parallel to y-axis at a distance of 4 units from the origin.
Since (0,0) satisfies the inequation x 4 . So, the portion lying on the left side of x = 4 is the region represented
by x 4 .
Region Represented by y 3; Clearly, y = 3 is a line parallel to x - axis at a distance 3 from it. Since (0,0)
satisfies y 3 . So, the portion containing the origin is represented by the given inequation.
The common region of the above five regions represents the solution of the given linear constaints as shown in fig.
