Electromagnetic radiation

How to separate the beam 1

1. Using refraction optics (ex. Prism)

Refraction?
Snells law

= refractive index of incident medium

= refractive index of refractive medium
= angle of incidence
= angle of refraction

Refraction is a function of
wavelength

Dispersion
Angular Dispersion -- > Higher grating density, higher angular dispersion

Linear Dispersion Higher grating density, lower linear dispersion

Resolving power (resolution)

of grating

N W is the total number of grooves in the grating

Higher grating density, higher grating resolution
If grating width is fixed, groove density and diffraction order are
related to the grating resolution

How to handle the optics
1) Put on optical gloves
2) Put on optical glasses when aligning the high intensity light
(Laser, Xenon lamp, etc.)
3) Put on the mask not to damage the optics by your spit
4) Do not touch the surface of reflection optics (Mirrors, Gratings)
5) Use the soft tissue to clean the lenses and optical color glass
filter
6) Do not touch the surface of the coated filter (Band pass filter,
Dichroic Mirror)
7) Maintain the optics in low humidity room (Optical cabinet)
8) Do not see the light directly and do not see high intensity
diffracted light (laser or high power xenon lamp) from grating
