CCSU Lesson Plan Template

Student Teacher: Amanda Lazaro

Grade Level: 4th Grade
Lesson Date: September 23, 2015
Name of Lesson: Geography and Maps
Common Core State Standard(s)
GEO 4.1 Construct maps and other graphic representations of both familiar and unfamiliar
places.
GEO 4.2 Use maps, satellite images, photographs, and other representations to explain
relationships between the locations of places and regions and their environmental
characteristics
Student Learning
What is the intended learning outcome of this lesson? Be sure it is observable and includes
clear criteria. Consider if there are students who will require an accommodation or
modification to meet this lessons objective.
The intended learning outcome of this lesson is for the students to be able to identify different
states and their capitals. If they were to look at a blank map of the united states they should
be able to identify each state.
Rationale for Objective: How does this lesson support previous and subsequent
learning?
This will support previous and subsequent learning because it will be building off what the
students already know. They will already have some knowledge about the U.S. and where
some states are located
Assessment
State the specific strategy (ies) and tool(s) used to collect the data for each SLO (i.e., essays,
projects, quizzes, exit slip, worksheet, etc.). Are there students who will require an
accommodation or modification to this lessons assessment?
The assessment for this lesson will be a worksheet at the end that will have blank states and
the students will be able to label the blank states from memory. An accommodation for this
lesson would be for students who have certain disability, this can be done on the computer
instead of being hand written.
Classroom Learning Environment Focus
(i.e., standards of behavior, routines, procedures, group work, transitions, instructional
arrangement, etc.). Explain specific needs.

The classroom learning environment focus is intended to be from group work. The students
will be in pairs working on learning the states. This will make it more fun and the students
will be learning from each other.
Instructional Model/Strategy
(i.e., concept formation, concept development, direct instruction, cooperative learning,
inquiry, discussion model). Explain how you will best facilitate student learning through a
specific model of instruction. Be sure to include a rationale for the chosen model(s). You may
use more than one:
For this lesson the students will be doing group work. This will help them retain the
information because they will be able to discuss the material with their partners. By working
with their partners they will be able to learn from each other. It is easier to retain information
when talking about the material out loud with someone.

Daily Formative Assessment
How will you check for understanding and student achievement during the lesson?
By looking at their worksheets I will be able to see if they know all of the states and what
progress they have made. If they know all of the states they can then move onto learning the
capitals.
Differentiating Instruction
How will you differentiate to meet the needs of your learners (i.e., what you teach, how you
teach, or how you will assess). Explain:
This lesson will be beneficial to all students because it will fulfill the needs of different
learners. It has visual, auditory, and kinesthetic aspects that are involved in this lesson. This is
also something that can be done at home for more practice before the test.
Initiation
Cite how you will engage and motivate learners, activate prior learning and present the
lessons objective. Explain: A) What they will be doing and learning in the lesson; B) How
they will demonstrate learning; C) Why it is important to their everyday lives.

For this lesson students will be getting into groups of two at the most. Each group will find a
computer and they will work together to learn about the states and where they are located. By
doing this in groups instead of individually they will peer teach themselves about the states
and their locations. If it is a state that they do not know then their partner might know or they
can find out together. This is important to their everyday lives because it is important to know
information about the country you live in.

Lesson Development
Cite how you will provide opportunities for the students to construct meaning. List the
steps/process you will follow. Be sure to identify how you will check for understanding and
collect formative data. Differentiate for students who will require an accommodation or
modification in order to be active participants in this lesson and state these strategies in the
differentiation section above.
The students will be using previous knowledge of the states and where they are
located
They will be working off each other and will also be able teach other since they are
working in groups
This will lead to discussions about different states
Example: if a child has moved her from a different state than that child can talk to us
about that state
Closure
How will you question students in order to evaluate if the objective(s) was met? How will you
question students to connect this lesson to previous and subsequent lessons as well as connect
to their own lives? How will you question students to see the relevancy of the lesson by
understanding the purpose/importance of the learning?
The assessments will be the worksheets that are given out after the activities. The worksheets
will be a blank map of the united states. The students will have to fill in each state from
memory and they can do the capitals if they remember them.
