Overview
This section draws the EFEM ins and outs and summarizes the document structure.
2.1
2.2
Document Overview
Section 2.1 What is the EFEM gives the EFEM main guidelines.
Section 4.2 lists and describes the parameters tracked by the EFEM and shows the
screenshots, with a mapping of the parameters on a screen-by-screen basis. Keep in mind
that appendix B "Glossary of the EFEM parameters" is a glossary of all the parameters
displayed by the EFEM.
Section 4.2 also describes the scrolling mechanism, the screen tracking and the modes
related to the phone. Section 4.2.4 gives the screen-to-parameter path. The way backwards,
meaning the path from a specific parameter to the appropriate screen, is given through
appendix B "Glossary of the EFEM parameters", for each parameter.
Section 4.3 explains the data sampling procedure, and how to freeze the data display.
Appendix A "Frequently asked questions" answers frequently asked questions about the
EFEM.

Changing the Availability to "on" allows the user to display the EFEM screens.
Note that if the availability is set to "on", after a power-cycle of the phone, the first EFEM
screen is automatically displayed.
4.2
Display
Screens are put together in modes. Each mode contains a typical list of screens. There are
two modes: parameters mode, favorites mode. The modes are described in section 4.2.2.
The screen can change either because the user scrolls from one to the other (inside a list),
or because the EFEM cannot maintain the screen in the current mode. For details on the
lists of screens, please refer to section 4.2.1. For details on the rest of the scrolling
mechanism, please see section 4.2.2. Each screen is individually described in section 4.2.4.
Note that hashes are "#" displayed when a parameter is not used. Note that asteriks are *

displayed when a parameter has a value meaning that it is not relevant, exclamation marks
! when it is out of range.
Note that for a given screen, the display can change when parameters values are refreshed.
Only the values change though, the user is still viewing the same screen.
On top of this, a list of favourite screens can be created and edited by the user. Please go to
section 4.2.3 to know how to edit your list of favourite screens and how to browse it.
If you want to be able to get oriented among the EFEM screens, you may be interested in
having a look at section 4.2.5. Appendix B "Glossary of the EFEM parameters" shows
which screen displays a given parameter, for each parameter.
Section 4.3 enlightens the user on data sampling and freezing the data.
4.2.1
Lists
4.2.1.1
List of Parameters
EFEM displays several screens. The screens suitable for display are gathered by RRC
context (DCH State, non DCH State as defined in [2]) and by GSM context (GSM 3G cell
Measurement Report). In each context, the screens are arranged in lists, through which the
user can scroll. These scrolling lists are described in the three tables below. But the current
list is not always the same; which list is chosen to be the current one depends on the phone
context. This is because some screens are irrelevant in some contexts.
Three scrolling lists are available for parameters mode: one for WCDMA DCH State
context, one for WCDMA non DCH State context and one for GSM . Whereas in favorites
mode, the scrolling list does not change with the context
All neighbour cell screens have been gathered together in the non-DCH scrolling list
(WCDMA). The neighbour cells are sorted by decreasing signal strength. The EFEM does
not track the cell chosen. Instead, the position of the neighbour cell in the neighbour list is
maintained, i.e. if you are viewing the second strongest neighbour cell, you shall always
view the second strongest cell, regardless of its scrambling code. If the composition of the
neighbour cells list changes, or if it is reordered, the information displayed will represent
another cell, but still the second strongest.
Below are screens describing the contents of each of these lists. Please be sure to read the
following paragraph for general information on the scrolling mechanism.

4.2.2.2
Modes
Display includes two modes. This section intends to describe them briefly. To pass from
one mode to another, long press left softkey, once the EFEM screens have been entered.
4.2.2.3
Parameters mode: this mode contains the exhaustive list of screens displaying the
EFEM parameters. Each screen regroups parameters by theme: serving cell screen,
neighbour cells screen, and so on.
Favorites mode: this mode contains a set of screens chosen by the user. Please
refer to the section 4.2.3 for more details.
Scrolling Mechanism
If displaying the EFEM screens, navigation through the different modes involves a long
left softkey press. A letter at the top left corner indicates what mode the current screen list
belongs to:

Scrolling involves the up and down arrows. Once you have entered a list of screens,
scrolling up shows the previous screen, while scrolling down shows the next screen. Note
that it is possible to access the first screen from the last while scrolling down as well as to
access the last screen from the first while scrolling up. The following figures roughly
represents how to scroll from one mode to the next on one hand, how to scroll within a
mode on the other hand.

to section 4.2 to find information about modes and screens. Section 4.2.3 explains all about
the favorites.
4.2.2.4
Tracking
In order to keep the screen as stable as possible even when the current list changes,
screens are tracked when possible. This subsection gives a description of how the screens
get tracked.
To explain this mechanism, a few figures are presented here. They illustrate what happens
when the current list of screens changes. Here is how to read them. Two lists of screens are
represented by a scroll with their names and, below, a set of labels for the screens they hold.
The user is supposed to be viewing the list on the left-hand side, when the current list
suddenly changes to the one on the right-hand side (as indicated by an arrow). Before the
list changes, the user sees the screen in yellow
in the left list. After the change in lists,
the user sees the pink
(or partly in pink ) screen in the right list. In the destination
list, the last screen viewed in that list before the change occurs is in yellow.
Below are the three three rules applied. Each of them is a use case. If the first rule does not
apply (i.e. the case does not match), the second is evaluated, then the third if necessary, and
so on. The last rule always applies.
First Rule:Each time the phone is powered up, the screen displayed is the first of
the current list. Each last screen viewed in a list is the first one.
18
Enhanced Field Engineering Mode Users Manual Release 3.0, Version 05.02
August 9, 2004
Second Rule: When the phone context (and therefore the current list of screens
available) changes, the current screen is tracked. This means that whenever the
screen you see before the change exists in the destination lists, the screen will not
change. This is shown on the figure 7 below.
On figure 7, the phone has established a call, it is in RRC State DCH. At end of the
call, the connection is released and the phone returns in a non-DCH State. The
EFEM tries to display the Cell Measurement screen (destination screen). The Cell
Measurement screen is available, and the rule described above applies: the screen
displayed is Cell Measurement.

Favorites mode
In favorites mode, the screens are displayed whatever the context is.
The list of favourite screens will be of some help to any user who finds that the screens do
not get displayed for enough time. It can also satisfy those who do not like that the EFEM
switches between screens and would rather see a screen with lots of stars from time to
time than a change in the layout of the parameters. It is also a way of customizing the
scrolling order in the EFEM screens.
The list of screens is edited by the user. To add a screen, be sure you are in the parameters
display mode; then (short) press left softkey when viewing the corresponding screen. A
notice informs you that the screen has been added to favorites. To remove a screen from
your favorites, go to that screen among the favourite ones and (short) press left softkey*.
Finally, if you do not have any screen in your list of favorites while entering favorites mode,
the current screen is added to favorites.
Favorites list remain after a power cycle.
4.2.4
*Note that if you empty the list of favourite screens, you will exit the favorites display mode

In the following sections, the details of each screen are given. Each of these sections
contains a screen, filled with a snapshot where the figures may not be realistic but mark the
place where the parameter value is located. Each value is linked to a box holding a note,
which gives the name and definition of the parameter. The parameter have a tag on the
screen, which is always in lower case, whereas the values always are in upper case.
When parameters are out of range, exclamation marks (!) filling the space allocated to
the parameter are displayed. When they are irrelevant to the current context, stars (*) are
displayed. When they are not used, hashes ("#") are displayed.
Some parameters may be described as "not yet available". Such parameters cannot be
obtained from EFEM screens at present.
The first four lines of Serving Cell Reselection screen, all Neighbour Cell Reselection
screens and NAS Mobility screen are common to these screens and give Serving Cell
information.
If you want to know where a parameter is located, see appendix C "Where is my parameter
in the EFEM screens?".
Note that for all the following figures, the right-hand side box is not part of the EFEM
screen. Each area in this box is related to a functional group of WCDMA/GSM parameters.

Data sampling
This chapter discusses how and when the parameters are obtained from the phone. When
taking readings, please remember that parameters refresh can be disabled (see section
4.3.2).
4.3.1
Sampling mechanism
The parameters are sampled from the lower layers of the phone upon a refresh. EFEM is
updated every two seconds.
When a refresh happens, the data is copied from the global parameters into a temporary
area, and the parameters are displayed on the screen:

Display
Note that the EFEM display is only updated every 2 seconds, hence the data displayed can
be up to 2 seconds old.
Note also that reading the EFEM parameters into display memory takes a small amount of
processing time, hence it is possible that one or more parameters may get updated during
the reading process.

Release Notes
Please refer to section 4 to get an overall picture of what feature is available on the phone.
5.3
5.3.1
Data inconsistency*
As explained in section 4.3, the parameters are not gathered instantaneously, so they
reflect the state of the phone up to 2 seconds previously. Furthermore, there may be some
incoherence in the data displayed due to the non-intrusive nature of the EFEM; this
incoherence is unlikely to happen. This limitation will not be worked on any further.
5.3.2
Contact
If you come upon a new problem, please send a mail describing the problem, with the
software version used, to the following address: Scott.Matthews@motorola.com

34
Enhanced Field Engineering Mode Users Manual Release 3.0, Version 05.02
Appendix B
August 9, 2004
This appendix intends at explaining all the parameters displayed on the EFEM screens (as
they are shown in section 4.2.4). They may be unclear because of the abbreviations used
in this document, or because of a particular semantic used for the EFEM. Parameters
definitions occur in alphabetical order.
Cell Type: WCDMA: S: serving cell (out of DCH) ; V: active set cell (in DCH);
A: WCDMA intra neighbour cell; E: WCDMA inter neighbour cell.
GSM: GSM: for GSM only ; GPR: for GSM and GPRS.
H : Quality level threshold criterion for hierarchical cell structures. If the serving
cell uses HCS then only those cells with H>0 are considered (exceptions
apply). For more details please refer to[3].
HCS used flag : flag to indicate wether HCS is being used or not. For more details
please refer to[3].
35
Enhanced Field Engineering Mode Users Manual Release 3.0, Version 05.02
August 9, 2004
HCS_prio : HCS priority level (0-7). If HCS is used then only those cells with the
highest HCS_PRIO are considered. (Except for fast moving mobiles
where the opposite is the case).
NCR : The threshold (for number of cell selections) used for the high mobility
calculation.
Number of Active Cells : The number of active cells in the active cell list
(assigned by UTRA)
Primary Scrambling Code : The scrambling codes are divided into 512 sets each
of a primary scrambling code and 15 secondary
scrambling codes. The primary scrambling codes
consist of scrambling codes n=16*i where i=0..511.
The i:th set of secondary scrambling codes consists of
scrambling codes 16*i+k, where k=1..15.
36

Qhcs : Quality threshold level for applying prioritised hierarchical cell re-selection
on serving cell
Qhyst1 : Hysteresis value read from the serving cell SIBs and applied to the
serving cell R (RSCP) calculations.
Qhyst2 : Hysteresis value read from the serving cell SIBs and applied to the
serving cell R (Ec/N0) calculations.
Qoffset 1 : Offset read from the Serving cell SIBs but applied to the Neighbour
cell R (RSCP) calculations.
Qoffset 2 : Offset read from the Serving cell SIBs but applied to the Neighbour
cell R (Ec/N0) calculations.
Qqualmin : Minimum required quality level in the cell (dB), used in Squal
calculations. Calculations based on Qualmeas flag. For more details
please refer to[3].
R : The cell-ranking criterion. The cell with the highest R is selected when HCS is
not used. For more details please refer to[3].
37

Secondary Scrambling Code : The scrambling codes are divided into 512 sets
each of a primary scrambling code and 15
secondary scrambling codes. The primary
scrambling codes consist of scrambling codes
n=16*i where i=0..511. The i:th set of secondary
scrambling codes consists of scrambling codes
16*i+k, where k=1..15.
SFN-SFN : This measurement is for identifying time difference between two cells.
SHCS,RATm : If HCS is used in the cell, then below this Srxlev limit in the
serving cell, the UE shall measure all cells of RATm (i.e. GSM)
Slimit, searchRATm : If HCS is used in the cell, then if Squal exceeds this limit
in the serving cell, the UE needs NOT measure neighbour cells of
RATm (i.e. GSM).
Squal : The cell selection quality value (dB). Only cells with Squal > 0 are
considered valid. For more details please refer to[3].
Srxlev : Cell Selection RX level value (dB). For more details please refer to[3].
38

August 9, 2004
SsearchHCS : If HCS is used in the cell, then below this limit in the serving cell,
the UE shall measure all neighbour cells both inter and intra
frequency.
SsearchRATm : If HCS is used in the cell, then below this limit in the serving
cell, the UE shall measure all neighbour RAT cells (i.e. GSM
cells).
T3312 : Routing Area Update Timer. On expiry, initiation of the periodic RAU
procedure.
TcrmaxHyst : The timer period for which high mobility remains in effect after the
number of cell reselections falls back down under the threshold
value.
