Adam has been allergic to the sun since
he was a baby. He gets terrible sunburn
when he goes out in daylight, and huge
blisters start to appear on his skin after a
few minutes. In the summer, Adam needs to
wear a special helmet and protective clothes
when he goes outside, and he wears very strong suncream
every day, even at home. However, life is easier for
Adam during the gloomy Scottish winter. He can go out
in normal clothes to play football with his friends after
school because it gets dark early.

Part 2

The next day, Melanie wakes up with a sore throat. The

pool was very cold yesterday. I hope I havent got a cold,
she thinks. She gets up, has a shower and gets dressed.
Her parents have already gone to work. She goes into the
kitchen to have breakfast, but theres no milk in the fridge.
She sees a note on the table from her mum:
Melanie is pleased at the thought of a
nice breakfast. She puts the money in her
pocket, picks up her keys and leaves the
flat.

Sorry, no milk. Can

you buy some?
Money on the table.
New caf on the
corner is excellent.
Have breakfast
there.
Love, Mum

Melanie decides to sit outside the caf.

When the waiter comes, she thinks she
recognizes him.
Do I know you? she asks.
Im not sure, he says. Do you go to Wood Green School?
Yes, Im in Year 11.
And Im in Year 12. Im Steve.
Im Melanie.
Nice to meet you, Melanie, says Steve. What would you
like to order?
Ill have a coffee and some toast, please, Melanie says.
After a few minutes, Melanie decides to move so that
she can sit in the sun. She doesnt realize that Steve is
standing behind her. As she gets up, she knocks into him
and the coffee spills all over his arm. Steve cries in pain
and drops the cup. A waitress has seen the accident and
runs over. Quick, lets put some cold water on your arm
before you get a blister, she says, giving Melanie an angry
look. Steve and the waitress disappear into the caf.
Melanie is very embarrassed. What should I do now?
she thinks.
