Gerunds

a. The gerunds are verbs that can function like nouns. They can often be
used as the subject of a sentence.
Ex. Eating fast food is not good for health.
Traveling by plane is fun.
Notice that the gerund is always singular and is followed by the third
person singular form of the verb.
Ex. Eating junk food makes me sick.
Be careful!!!! Dont confuse the gerund with the continuous form of the
verb
Ex. Drinking coffee isnt healthy.
Gerund

Progressive form

b. The gerund is often used after certain verbs. That means that they work
as object of certain verbs

c. There are many common expression with go + gerund. These expressions
usually describe activities, such as shopping, fishing, skiing, swimming and
camping
Ex. WE often go swimming in the lake

c. You can use a possessive before the gerund


Ex. I dislike Peters playing with dolls
I dislike his playing with dolls.
Spoken English: object pronouns instead of possessive before gerunds.
Ex. I dislike him playing with dolls.
d. If verb comes after a preposition, the verb ends in ing. That means
that the gerund is the only verb form that can follow a preposition.
Ex. We talked about going to America.
