1. Scope of Works

Scope of Activities
The Under Floor Trunking system shall confirm to the material and fabrication requirements
as per this specification. This scope defines the minimum standards to be adopted when
installing under floor Trunking in buildings and structures according to Electrical specification
of client. Under Floor Trunking shall be installed in structural slab floor according to
construction co-ordination drawings.

Site Procedure
Site mobilization shall be done with real time monitoring the conditions & progress of builder
works. Before commencement of the work, carry out examination of the physical condition of
the area. Photographs should be taken where necessary, prior to commencement and
during works.

I.

Method Statement
Preparation stage
a. Prior to install under floor trunking; examine the containment paths to ensure all
areas free of debris that may interfere with the installation.

b. Under floor trunking generally bundled and ship to site for delivery.
c. Special care must be exercised using slings so the under floor trunking is not
crushed from the improper location and lifting by sling.
d. To prevent from damage of under floor containment, never pull the containment from
truck trailer by chaining to bottom rung and dragging out of trailer.

e. To prevent damage to under floor trunking, never pull from truck trailer by chaining to
bottom rung and dragging out of trailer.

f.
g.

Inventory all items immediately after unloading, using manufactures packing list.
Under floor trunking should be stored away from high traffic areas. UFS (Under
Floor system) should be stacked by width and type.

II.

Installation stage:
Under Floor Trunking

a. Site survey the proposed routing as per approved CSD / Shop Drawing by Foreman and
Sub-Contractor.
b. Installation must be carried out based on approved shop drawings and samples by
Foreman and Sub-Contractor.
c. The under floor trunking system shall be suitable for use in the distribution of power,
telephone and data service within concrete slabs or floor screeds and finishes in
accordance with the layouts as in the construction drawings.

d. The under floor trunking system supplied shall be complete inclusive of all necessary
trunking, junction boxes, services outlet boxes, services outlets accessories, plates,
vertical access boxes, pedestal outlets boxes, duct outlets, flyover units, radius, bends,
jointing sleeves, fixing clips and all other accessories necessary to bring about a
complete working system.
e. The method of installation of the under floor trunking system shall comply to the
manufacturers instructions and shall be as appropriate for cast-in-situ system or floor
screeded system. The type of system is cast-in-situ or floor screeded as shown in the
drawings.

Junction Box
f. The junction boxes shall be flushed with the final finished floor level and the junction
box base frame and pillar supports shall be manufactured of zinc alloy die-cast in
one piece to give the base unit the mechanical strength.
g. The junction box lid and metal flyover shall epoxy coated and the trap cover shall be
of zinc alloy die-cast heavy load bearing materials.
h. The trap cover with recess, suitable for vinyl tile, carpet or ceramic tile floor finish,
shall be installed for the junction box.

i. The junction box shall be provided with overlapping flanges for securing onto the floor
slab, and flyover for segregation of intersecting cables.

j. Knock-out trunking outlets shall be provided on all 4 sides of the junction box and the
trap cover supported by the frame and height adjustable pillar screws shall be
provided with neoprene rubber gaskets to prevent noise and ingress of moisture and
dust.

k.

Service outlet box

The concealed services outlet floor boxes for power data and/or telephone outlets
shall be manufactured of zinc alloy die-cast heavy load bearing materials and the
base frame and pillar support shall be zinc alloy die-cast in one piece, complying with
BS 1004 : 1972 (1985).

l.

The trap lifting handle shall be retractable into the trap cover without the need of
cutting the floor finish materials and it shall not protrude from the trap cover. The lid,
frame and accessories plate shall be epoxy coated for protection and against
corrosion.

m. The junction boxes and concealed outlet floor boxes shall be supplied with
disposable screeding lids, so that the traps will not be covered with cement or
concrete during screeding or casting of concrete and the traps shall only be installed
after screeding and/or casting.
n. Generally the services outlet box shall be supplied with multiple lids for 2

compartments services outlets and 1 lid for 3 compartment services outlet.

o. Select the correct size under floor trunking by Engineer, Foreman and Sub-Contractor.
p. Install the correct size Trunking, anchor bolt and supporting brackets by Foreman and
Sub-Contractor.
q. Check to ensure no sharp edge within the under floor trunking compartment by
Foreman, Assistant Foreman and Sub-Contractor.

r.

Under floor trunking installation- Use the duct layout plan to select a fixed starting point
for the installation, for example a junction box.

s. Tie two guide lines at 90 deg to each other, ensuring that they match the duct layout
plan.
t.

Position the first junction box centrally below the intersection of the guide lines and level
to required screed depth.

u. Lay duct/ trunking sections to reflect the layout plan. Ensure ducting compartments are
aligned as indicated by the continuous marking on the top of the duct.
v. Open the pre-punched side walls of the under floor box and insert the duct as far as it
will go.
w. Fasten the under floor/junction box and readjust to required screed depth level.
x. Fasten the duct section at coupling devices to the concrete.
y. Ensure external duct partition markings are aligned.
z. Attach an earth continuity connector at all duct couplings or joints.
aa. Marking- Using a square that reaches across width of the under floor trunking, gauge off
the edge of one side and mark both flanges. Next, position the square and mark the
trunking. Marking can be done with scribe, marking pen, or a pencil.
bb. Cutting- The cut can be using a hand held hacksaw, carbide tipped circular saw,
diamond dusted blades, hand held band saw, offset bolt cutters or high speed grinder. It
is important to get square cut to ensure good splice connection. Under floor trunking
manufactures offer jigs and other devices to aid in the field cutting. After cutting, smooth
the cur edges to remove any burrs.
cc. Refer the planning and installation pictures.

dd. After installation of under floor trunking, Engineer-in-charge shall check the complete
works and complete the Inspection checklist for Electrical Under floor trunking
installation works. (See Appendix 1)
ee. Engineer-in-charge shall arrange and request for inspection with the Owners
representative Residential Technical Officer (RTO) using approved Main con Request for
Inspection (RIN) form.
