1.0 INTRODUCTION

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available with
a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the
software to anyone and for any purpose.

HARDWARE
Hardware is the physical parts or components of a computer, such as the monitor, mouse,
keyboard, computer data storage, hard disk drive (HDD), system unit (graphic cards, sound
cards, memory, motherboard and chips), and so on, all of which are physical objects that can
be touched (that is, they are tangible)

SOFTWARE
Computer software or simply software is any set of machine-readable instructions that directs
a computer's processor to perform specific operations. Computer software contrasts
with computer hardware, which is the physical component of computers. Computer hardware
and software require each other and neither can be realistically used without the other.

2.1 MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE, OS AND OPEN SOURCE OS
OPEN SOURCE
In production and development, open source as a development model promotes a universal
access via a free license to a product's design or blueprint, and universal redistribution of that
design or blueprint, including subsequent improvements to it by anyone.
OS
An operating system (OS) is software that manages computer hardware and software
resources and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is an

essential component of the system software in a computer system. Application programs

usually require an operating system to function.
OPEN SOURCE OS
An open source (OS) operating system is a set of programs that schedule tasks, allocate
storage and presents a default interface to the user between application. But this OS is free ,
user have the right to use , modify and redistribute the software for better interoperability.

2.2 EXAMPLES OF OPEN SOURCE OS

DREAMLINUX 5.0

Dreamlinux was a Brazilian computer operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux. It can
boot as a live CD, from USB flash drive, or can be installed on a hard drive. The

distribution's GUI aims to have a centered animated toolbar. As of October 2012, The
Dreamlinux Project has been discontinued. Dreamlinux 5.0 offers new installer called
FlexiBoot which allows users to easily install Dreamlinux 5.0 in USB external hard drive and
use it anywhere, or install it to the internal hard drive. MKDistro is a simple utility that
allows users to build their own customized Dreamlinux and Debian-based distribution.

UBUNTU 14.10

Version 14.10 having only minor updates to the kernel, Unity Desktop, and included
packages . The kernel was updated to 3.16 for hardware support and has for security, full
kernel address space layout randomization applied to the kernel and its modules, plus the
closure of a number of information leaks in /proc.

3.1 MEANING OF APPLICATION SOFTWARE , OPEN SOURCE
APPLICATION SOFTWARE

APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Application software (an application) is a set of one or more computer programs designed to
permit the user to perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks, or activities. Application
software cannot run on itself but is dependent on system software to execute.

OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE

Application software is a defined subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of a computer
directly to a task that the user wishes to perform. This should be contrasted with system software which is

involved in integrating a computer's various capabilities, but typically does not directly apply them in the
performance of tasks that benefit the user. The term application refers to both the application software and its
implementation.

MOZILLA FIREFOX

Mozilla Firefox (known simply as Firefox) is a free and open-source web browser developed
for Windows, OS X, andLinux, with a mobile version for Android, by the Mozilla

Foundation and its subsidiary, the Mozilla Corporation. Firefox uses the Gecko layout
engine to render web pages, which implements current and anticipated web standards.

OPEN OFFICE

OpenOffice an office application set (for word processing , spreadsheet manipulation,

picture drawing and data base access) compatible with all other major office
application sets such as Office and available for Windows and Mac as well as Linux
and other UNIX systems

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING

5.1 MEANING OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING

Pervasive computing is the trend towards increasingly ubiquitous (another name for the movement is
ubiquitous computing), connected computing devices in the environment, a trend being brought about by a
convergence of advanced electronic - and particularly, wireless - technologies and the Internet. Pervasive
computing devices are not personal computers as we tend to think of them, but very tiny - even invisible devices, either mobile or embedded in almost any type of object imaginable, including cars, tools,
appliances ,clothing and various consumer goods - all communicating through increasingly interconnected
networks.

5.2 EXAMPLES OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING

SMARTPHONE
A smartphone is a mobile phone
offering advanced capabilities, often
with PC-like functionality. There is no
industry standard definition of a
smartphone. For some, a smart
phone is a phone that runs complete
operating system software providing
a standardized interface and
platform for application developers .

SMART TV
A smart TV, sometimes referred to
as connected TV or hybrid TV, is a television
set or set-top box with integrated Internet
and Web 2.0 features, and is an example
of technological convergence between
computers and television sets and set-top
boxes. Besides the traditional functions of
television sets and set-top boxes provided through traditional broadcasting media, these
devices can also provide Internet TV, online interactive media, over-the-top content, as well
as on-demand streaming media, and home networking access.

6.0CONCLUSION

Most of the open source software is licensed under what is often termed a copyleft license,
a term which emphasizes the licenses reversal of the principles of copyright. A traditional
license is used to limit freedom, which the free software movement considers essential , the
four software freedom. Taking them away from the users either completely or partially .
