The Jersey Shore, notwithstanding so many Sandy

flashbacks, looks increasingly likely to dodge the galeforce winds, epic rains and havoc of Hurricane Joaquin, forecasters predicted Friday.
Downgraded to a Category 3 storm in the afternoon,
Joaquin started moving northeast after battering the
Bahamas for nearly three days, but its projected path
would spare the Eastern Seaboard, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm may end up some
400 miles east of the New Jersey coast.
It looks like we dodged a bullet this time, Gov.
Chris Christie said. Lets keep our fingers crossed.
High winds and minor coastal flooding likely will
peak this morning, state climatologist David A. Robinson said. Monmouth and Ocean counties should expect

TRENTON The gun massacre at an Oregon junior

college has set the stage for a showdown over New Jerseys gun laws.
Democrats on Friday said they will try for a second
time to override Gov. Chris Christies veto of a bill intended to keep guns out of the hands of individuals with
a history of mental illness.
Lawmakers from both parties voted unanimously in
the summer for the measure, but Christie pressured
members of the GOP caucus in the state Senate to
change their positions to sustain the veto, which they
did Sept. 24.
The bill would have required more sharing of New
Jersey mental health records with firearms permitting
authorities.
Democrat Stephen Sweeney, the Senate president,
said the killing of nine people at Umpqua Community
College in Roseland, Oregon, is another senseless act
of violence that resulted in the loss of too many lives,
that left too many wounded victims and caused too
much trauma and loss for their families and the community.
The 26-year-old gunman also died in the siege.
We were always determined to get the legislation
enacted that would help keep firearms out of the hands

wind gusts exceeding 45 miles per hour along the coast

and 25 to 40 mph inland, but the threat of additional
flooding and strong winds into next week has diminished.
We can breathe a collective sigh of relief for this
particular event and for the short term, but we still do
have the potential as you go through October of having
another storm that could potentially affect (the region), Robinson said.
The high wind advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m.
today, and the coastal flood warning is expected to last
until 6 p.m. Sunday, according to the service.
