PLANNING YOUR PROPOSAL (your plan should not include

more than 250 words)

Due date: 6 September, 2015.
A proposal is a succinct summary of the ideas that will shape your study. Each of
the first four parts of your final proposal should be between 100 and 150 words
in length, BUT THE TOTAL MUST NOT EXCEED 500 WORDS. Words in the
reference list are not counted. You can use this worksheet to help you plan your
ideas. You can also write your final proposal in these boxes, if you wish. An
electronic copy of this worksheet is available on Moodle. If you do not wish to use
this worksheet for your final proposal, use the headings to indicate where the
various parts of your proposal start.
FIVE REQUISITE PARTS
1. Importance of your research
(CONTEXT AND GENERAL THEORY)

2. Overall aims of your study (THE

SMALL PART OF THE THEORY TO BE
EXAMINED)

POINTS YOU WISH TO CONSIDER

The study will shed light into
intelanguage system of EFL learner
Useful material for further investigation
into different fields of study
intelanguage pragmatics, linguistics,
second language acquisition, teaching
authentic language

The study aims to investigate the use

of discourse markers of an advanced
learner. The participant is a graduate
student in Latrobe university. There are
several reason why this person has
been chosen for the study. First, the
author plan to investigate someon from
the same country she wished to teach
as this may provide useful insight for
her future teaching career and th
students she is going to work with in
the future.
The researcher has been inspired to
sstudy this feature of language due
how different between native speakers
and non native speakers in using
discourse markers in their speech. How
it reflect the interpersonal aspects and
make the speech personal . non native

speaker sound too formal and . how a

learner, despite iat a low level of
proficiency, but accustomed to the
culture naturalistic learners, sound
more natural and not award, compare
to igh-level learner but without real
exposure to the community of the
target language. .
to her experience of studying
approach. She notice
In term of the motivation, the
researcher hopes this study shed light
into the use and acquisition markers,
which is a natural aspet of native
speaker communicative competence
but has been neglected in English text
books and curriculum as well as
teacher planning and teaching. This is
a call into action for what authentic
language and communicative
competence to teaching can enage and
personalize each learners learning
experience
Why focus on a certain group of
discourse markers?
First , these rarely appear in learning
and teaching materials. Second,
hypothesis is that other discourse
markers more or lesss has
beeenmentioned , especially can
appear in written text as well and what
learners has been taught is the one
nearere to textual oriented function,
structuring and organizing aspects and
focus on semantic meaning of these
markers.
That does not mean that the current
study will not investigate these uses of
the discourse markers. As had been
discussed in the lit review, the use of
discourse markers multi function. Each
markers and the way they employed in
the participant speech will be
examined fully to. O not separet one
use over another . as muller said , one
markers may have one core meaning in
a cetain situatuuion of speech, but sub

function.
Overlook other aspects not interested
in will be misleading. Multifunctionality
approach to reflect the flexile nature,
inventory use of thse markers
3. Methods 1: How the study will be
conducted

4. Methods 2: Why it will be conducted

in this way (RELATE BACK TO THEORY)

5. Key References: Not in word count

Informal conversation which is the

most likely situation in whichthese
markers will appear. The topic
willrevolve around daily stuff and the
participants life to make sure she feel
comfortabl. However, the participant
will not be informed which feature is
the focus of the study to make sure
that the conveesation going natrurally
and the data is not faked reflect the
natual language use of the participant.
After the interview, if the participant
request, the researcher can tell her and
send a copy of the data
(((( monologue and dialogue: how the
partici[ant change the discourse
marker in a non-communicative
situation. Dialogue require interaction
and concern about the other partners
aware of this or not. There are several
markers under discussion is supposed
to have both structuring and
interpersonal as well. Test will they be
used or not how they are used
