n Master the esssential of the sentence as an aid to
clear thinking and effective writing.
n A key to good writing is to possess or develop
sentence sence. Sentence sence is the awareness of
what makes a sentence the ability to recognize its
grammatical essentials and to understand the
relationship between its parts. Observing the
positions, forms, and meaning of words can help you
to understand the relationship between parts of
sentences.

Meaning
Verbs are words that express action, occurrence, or
existence (a state of being)
n Play ball. The rain stopped.
n They exist.

Function
A verb function as the predicate of a sentence or as an
essential part of the predicate.
n William drives
n William usually drives his car to work.

SUBJECTS
To identify a subject, find the verb; then use the verb in
a question beginning with who or what as shown in the
following example:
n The dog in the cage ate.
Verb: ate
n Who or what ate? The dog Subject: the dog.
