Capacity Growth
REN21 2014

Solar PV
By early 2014, at least 53 solar PV plants larger than
50 MW were operating in at least 13 countries. The
worlds 50 biggest plants reached cumulative capacity
exceeding 5.1 GW by the end of 2013.

CSP
Total global capacity increased by nearly 0.9 GW, up
36%, to more than 3.4 GW. The United States and
Spain continued their global market leadership.
EgyE 201 | Solar Energy Report

12

Regional
Asia became the largest regional market in Solar PV.
Added 22.76GW to end 2013 with almost 42GW of
Solar PV in Operation.
Japan concentrates mostly on rooftop/floating
installations for lack of spatial resources.
China focused on the sunny western provinces which
are far from available grid connections.
India added 1.1GW, South Korea- 0.4GW and
Thailand 0.3 GW.

Philippines
The Philippines is located just right above the
equator. It is blessed with a good potential for solar
energy . The average solar radiation ranges from
128-203W/m2 which is equivalent to around 4.55.5 kWh/m2/day. The government has set
aspirational target of 1,528 MW in the National
Renewable Energy Plan to be reached by 2030.

Solar systems may be categorized depending on the

way that they capture and convert sunlight into
usable energy.

Passive Solar Systems

harness the heat energy from
sunlight without the use of
moving parts or electronics
Active Solar Systems use
mechanical or electrical
devices that convert the sun's
heat or light to another form
of usable energy
EgyE 201 | Solar Energy Report

25

Active Solar Systems - PV

Photovoltaics
Directly converts energy from sunlight into
electricity
Solar panels capture light energy from the sun,
and then use that energy to drive an electric
current

Transportation, Handling and Storage

Power plants can be built as:
Distributed Generation
- Power generation at the point
of consumption
Utility-Scale
- Generates solar power and
feeds it into the grid, supplying
a utility with energy

Utility Scale Solar Farms
- require large amounts of land to produce
electricity on a commercial scale.
- potential impact of such projects on natural
habitats

Hazardous Materials
and its Disposal (Solar PV)
The majority of photovoltaic panels are made
from silicon and other metals that are
potentially toxic like mercury, lead, and
cadmium.

EgyE 201 | Solar Energy Report

38

Greenhouse Emissions
The construction of new utility scale solar
energy projects and the panels are bound to
result in some greenhouse gas emissions.
