Definition of Election
An election is a formal decisionmaking process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public
office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which
modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th
Types of Election
There are deffirent kinds of elections.i.e refrendum, general
elections and primary elections.
Refrendum
A referendum is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is
asked to either accept or reject a particular proposal, usually a
piece of legislation which has been passed into law by the local
legislative body and signed by the pertinent executive official(s).
General Elections
An election, usually held at regular intervals, in which candidates
are elected in all or most constituencies or electoral districts of a
nation.
Primary Elections
[A primary election is an election that narrows the field of
candidates before the general election. Primary elections are one
means by which a political party nominates candidates for the
next general election]2
Methods of elections
Direct Elections
Inrtroduction
Direct election is a term describing a system of choosing political
officeholders in which the voters directly cast ballots for the
person, persons, or political party that they desire to see elected.
The method by which the winner or winners of a direct election
are chosen depends upon the electoral system used. The most
commonly used systems are the plurality system and the two
round system for single winner elections, such as a presidential
election, and party-list proportional representation for the election
of a legislature.
Indirect Elections
Introduction
An indirect democracy is a type of democratic government in
which voters choose delegates to create the laws of government
on their behalf. A common term that is used interchangeably with
indirect democracy is representative democracy.
It Enhance Bribary
In this method of elections the voters can easiloy be bribed.
Conclusion
We can conclude from all above disscussion that both direct and
indirect methods have advantages as well as disadvantages.
Indirect election have the flaw of impairing the self respect and
sense of responsibility of the voters. But it is helpful for choosing
good and sensible persons and is also good for politically
unorganised countries.
Direct election places powers in the hands of ignorant masses and
the opinion of the people is made for them by professional
politicians and propagandists. In other side this method broadens
the mental horizon of people and also lessened the chances of
corruption.
However, whatever the electoral mechanism is, if the quality of
the candidates is low, it is difficult to expect local governance to
improve. One short term solution that could have a revolutionary
impact is to consider a radical option, i.e. for all who want to be
candidates to publicly announce their wealth, and prove that their
wealth had been lawfully obtained.
