INTRODUCTION
Book play vital role in our life. It is a most
adaptable invention for conveying knowledge.They
are the tools of learning and they act as the chain
of communication from the older generation to the
young.Book are considered to the object of
art,which
are
created
a
process
of
writing,editing,printing and binding etc.They are
materials mean through which the literature, ideas,
view points, inventions, incidents, experiences and
knowledge etc. are transmitted to the society.
Libraries are the acquisition, preservation, effective
use and dissemination of recorded knowledge and
information contained in other books and
documents.
Now a days we are emphasizing education for
democracy which,in turn warrants democracy in
education.Only a little is to be dictated by the
teacher:the rest is to be freely chosen by the
pupil.Library is the agency for experimentation in
this education for democracy and education in
democracy

From the beginning children need an environment

enriched by attractive books and it is one of the
duties of the school to see that this environment is
provided. If a childs early experience with books
are pleasurable, a sound foundation is laid for their
use in his future development, because once the
child has been taught to love and read books with
a passion they become the main source for
exploration of knowledge.

WHAT
LIBRARY

IS

SCIENCE

One of the important recommendations made

by the secondary education commission was that
every school has subject libraries, which are under
the charge of the subject teachers. If was felt that
the subject teacher could enrich their teaching,
making use of small collections of books on their
own subjects. Science being one of the most
important areas of school curriculum the content of
which rapidly goes on changing both teachers and
pupils has to constantly go on reading books in the
subject. This warrants provision of a rich and
updated science library in every school. This
essentially needed to help the teachers and pupils

keep abreast of the latest books and update their

knowledge. Then they can recommend some books
to their student and encourage them to acquire the
habit of extending and supplementing their
knowledge by making proper use of science library.
Science library thus can be a wonderful teachingaid for realizing the demands of developmental
education.

MAIN OBJECTIVES OF SCIENCE

LIBRARY
To help teachers and pupils alike updates
scientific knowledge.
To facilitate Self Studies and Learning to
learn .
To enrich curricular experiences.
To enable pupils participate in discussion and
project work meaningfully.
To make co-curricular activities such as
participation in science club activities more
meaningful and dynamic.

To create interest in science as a subject of

study.
To develop the habit of concentrated reading of
knowledgeable books, with a purpose.
To develop in the students critical attitude and
capacity for independent judgement.
To develop the habit of reading as a useful
leisure time activity.

IMPORTANCE
LIBRARIES

OF

SCIENCE

As is said,Reading makethe a full man, the

importance of books is quite evident. Not only are
they vital forces of acquiring knowledge but they
the vital forces of acquiring knowledge but they
also act as great friends and companions in times
of need. We get pleasure, peace, consolation,
strength, courage, ready advice and knowledge
from books. Great mines may exhaust, cities may
perish and kingdoms may be swept away even
man may weep at his moral destruction, but the
external body of thought that lies hidden in the
shape of a book will exist for all times .Good books
to the young mind are like the warm sun and
refreshing rains to the seeds.
As our aim today is not only to educate the child
formally, but also to make him useful and good
citizen of the state, libraries are essential .They will
improve his mental faculties, inspire his spiritual

qualities and thus build and develop the whole

personality of child.

ORGANISATION OF SCIENCE
LIBRARY
1.A separate science library under the charge of
science teacher should be an integral part of
science department, occasionally, during a
lesson, the teacher can refer to certain library
books.
2.For the proper organization, the science
teacher
should
look
to
money
and
accommodation available. For this purpose
money can also be utilized out of science grant
or science fund of the school, otherwise a part
of the amalgamated fund can be set aside for
this purpose

3.Active measures essential for encouraging love

for reading, pupils should be required to write
abrief review of the books read by them. Good
reviews prepared by the pupils should find a
place in the school magazine.
4. A cross reference index may be maintained
in which teachers and pupils should briefly
indicate the information furnished in the books
read by them under suitable headings.
5.The library should be divided into various
sections as suggested below.

Text books

Inspir

ational books
Background books
Reference books
Experimental books
Popular science books
Teachers books
Science magazine
6.A notice board may be made use of to suggest
suitable reference and reading material and to
put up advertisement of new books and
magazines.

LOCATION
1.The science library should generally be
located in a corner of the classroom or in the
laboratory part of the room.
2.It is more advantageous to have a library in
each science rooms rather than to have
facilities concentrated in one room.

ADVANTAGES
1.The slow reader with a little instruction and
guidance learns to seek out book on his own
level.
2.A classroom library also provides one of the
least expensive and most flexible services for
talented children.
3.It enables gifted students to explore new
fields as rapidly as their capacity permits.

4. Reading

is

indeed

worthwhile experience.

pleasurable

and

CONCLUSION
Science library is an essential part of the
equipment. Pupils must read extra books other
than text books for gaining general knowledge. The
library books supplement what has been taught in
the class. The books must be such as to provoke
thinking and discussion, to develop interest in
matters of science, to stimulate further reading, to
help to articulate and elucidate scientific concepts
and problems, to suggest further problems and to
give insight in to social implications and
contributions of science.
