Style Conventions
Here are some text style conventions, which will be maintained throughout this
manual. These conventions will make the manual easily understandable and help
you better navigate through it:
Terms, filenames, and document titles are written in italic. Examples:
All SubtitlePlus 4.0 customers are entitled for free minor updates.
Capture card required, such as Pinnacle PCTV.
Screen text quotes are written in a non-serif, fixed width font. Example:

Installation
SubtitlePlus is a multi-user environment and can be installed in a variety of
configurations. The core subtitling preparation environment is suitable for any
type of workstation, no matter where - at a subtitling facility or editors home.
Subtitles can be prepared anywhere and then brought to the main subtitling
station on a file, by a single floppy disk.
Depending on the needs of particular production, additional modules may be
required for the job, for example LTC reader, Video Overlay, etc. Each of these
modules is available as part of a SubtitlePlus bundle.
The main subtitling station is usually equipped with a video frame buffer such as
Dayang DigiTitle, dpsReality, Matrox DigiSuite or BlackMagic DeckLink. It is
intended for final subtitle layout and execution. Depending on the configuration it
may also be equipped with VGA video overlay, LTC reader, RS-422 deck control,
etc. Each of these modules is available as part of a SubtitlePlus bundle.

Typical Applications
Each user requires a different configuration of SubtitlePlus and appropriate
hardware environment in order to do his job as effectively as possible:
Translators would usually do their job with as simple text editor as possible, but
once they touch the SubtitlePlus ease of use they will love it and never feel like
using simple text editors anymore. This is due to all the SubtitlePlus specific
useful features, specially designed with subtitling in mind, such as splitting and
joining lines and screens, moving single words back and forth among subtitle
lines, etc. For example, it is particularly easy and straightforward to move a word
from the beginning of the lower line to the end of the upper line with a single
keyboard shortcut. Some translators prefer working at their own PC at home.
SubtitlePlus can be installed on such a PC, even on a low-performance one.
Actually there is also a DOS version available, called TSB, working even on a
386-based PC. SubtitlePlus gives translators the ability to verify their work by
automatic sync mode with LTC, even with a VHS copy of the program. All you
need is to just copy the LTC track onto one of the VHS audio tracks. Besides, if
you own a video-in capture board, you may even see the actual subtitles overlaid
on the video program at your VGA desktop.
Editors would definitely fall in love with the SubtitlePlus ability to navigate
through sections, film parts, timecode, etc. It is particularly easy to insert and
remove words, lines, line breaks and whole subtitle pages with a single operation.
The user interface is so intuitive; you would rarely need to consult the users
manual. Choosing font attributes can be quite a pleasant job with instant
WYSIWYG preview on both VGA screen and video output. Subtitle layout over
video can be adjusted on both VGA overlay screen or video frame buffer for
greater precision.
Subtitling operators will benefit from SubtitlePlus stability and error-free
operation, saving unnecessary repeating of lengthy operations. SubtitlePlus is
designed and developed by subtitlers for subtitlers, thus seamlessly automating
most of the subtitlers tasks, still flexible enough for last minute changes.
Features like freewheel running when timecode drops for a specific interval
are essential tools and we believe they are hard to find in competing subtitling
solutions.
There are four working modes available, each dedicated to a specific application.
They are controlled by four radio buttons at the bottom of the interface. EDIT is
for editing subtitle text, CODE is for entering timecode of subtitles, TRANSMIT and
MANUAL are for automatic or manual subtitle output.
- 12 -
Quick Start
SubtitlePlus maintains a pretty simple, yet powerful user interface, enabling easy
learning and unlimited creativity at the same time. The first time SubtitlePlus is
started a new project will be created and ready to be filled with subtitles.
The default mode is EDIT, enabling you to enter and edit subtitle text. This can be
done pretty simple just begin typing text this will be your first subtitle. When
the line is finished, just press Enter. A second line is created, ready for typing. If
you dont wish to have a second line in the first subtitle, then just press Enter
again. A new subtitle is created, ready for typing. Repeat that procedure until all
the subtitle text is entered and ready. If you need to go back and edit specific
subtitle you can use the up and down arrows as well as PageUp and PageDown to
navigate through subtitles.
Once all the subtitle text is ready, move to CODE mode. Then you will be able to
define subtitle start and end times. This can be done by using external timecode
source, internal timecode generator, timecode from media file, etc. For the
purpose of our Quick Start we will be using Devices | Transport |
Internal TC Generator. It emulates a tape deck, and can be controlled by
using the Play Control Bar. Just hit PLAY and there you go the Timecode
Display begins to increment. Then you may begin defining start and end times
of subtitles by simply pressing and holding the SPACEBAR button. When the
button is down the subtitle is displayed, when released the subtitle disappears and
the next one is prepared. Repeat this until all subtitle times are defined. You may
notice that there is a color bar just below the main subtitle window. It shows how
long a subtitle should last on the screen, according to the integrated automatic
reader. Each language has its different average reading speed (in characters-persecond), so it can be adjusted in Preferences | Titles | Reading Speed.
When everything is ready, just click on TRANSMIT and rewind the VTR or the
timecode source. In this mode the subtitles will be output at the frame buffer
installed, ready to be mixed with the video source and recorded back on tape.
This process is totally automatic and requires no attendance from the operator.
If you need to lay the subtitles manually, you can select MANUAL mode to display
and hide subtitles by pressing and holding SPACEBAR as in the CODE mode

Graphical User Interface
The GUI is divided into several parts with different purpose:
Control Toolbar
It contains all the available control toolbars and enables you to rearrange them as
you like, according to your preferences. All the toolbars from within can be
undocked as separate windows, or just repositioned.
- 14 -
This is where most of the work is done. In this area you can input and edit subtitle
text and timecode. You may add comments, and also preview the actual layout of
the subtitle on the screen. You may easily navigate in this area by using several
methods: dragging with the third mouse (scroll) button; dragging with the left
mouse button over the black vertical line at the left side; pressing PageUp and
PageDown.
Preview Window
This window shows you exactly what your subtitles look like. You can hide it if
you prefer to look at the video monitor instead. Its size can be selected from full,
half and third size of the original bitmap, you may select whether you will see
subtitles only, or with overlay video. The background may be checkerboard, blue,
black, or your custom background picture. All of the above options can be found
in the context menu invoked by right-clicking over the preview window.
Splash Window
This window is shown on SubtitlePlus startup
and can also be accessed through the Help >
About command. It contains important
information about your bundle type (to the
right of the SubtitlePlus logo). It also shows
the current software version and build. You

Styles are sets of font attributes such as font name, size, color, edge, shadow, etc.
You can open the list of available styles from Format menu Styles or by
pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on your keyboard.
There are some default styles defined, but you may also create your own styles,
according to your production environment preferences. Each style contains 2 font
definitions. Most of the subtitling work is done by using a single style with 2
fonts, the first for normal text, the second one for speech, screen quotes, etc.
While editing subtitles you may change the active font by pressing Ctrl+B. In
order to define styles, you have to select Format Style command. The
checkerboard screen in the right of this dialogue gives you an idea what your
current style looks like. If you wish to create your own style, click the New
button. If you wish to modify an existing style, select it in the list to the left and
click the Modify button. If you simply want to remove a style, select it in the
list to the left and click the Delete button. You can load and save your styles
to a file. If you name that file Default.sbs this will become your default set
of styles, loaded automatically every time SubtitlePlus starts. After making
certain changes to your styles, if you want to apply them and exit the dialog, click
the Apply button. If you wish to discard the changes and exit, click Cancel.

Editing a Style
When you select New or Modify, the Style Editing Dialogue opens. The
checkerboard screen in the upper right corner of the dialogue gives you an idea
what your current style looks like. There are plenty of parameters to define for the
style, valid for both fonts in it:
Box Type - defines what kind of background will be applied behind the subtitle
text. You may choose from None, Sized (following the text size), and Fixed
(fixed size box). You may select Box color and Box Extent. The latter
represents the distance (in pixels) from the edge of the screen.
V. Just - defines the vertical alignment in relation to the base line (see V. Pos
below). You may choose from top (subtitles aligned under the vertical position
line), center (subtitles centered at the vertical position line) and bottom
- 32 -
Left Align - defines how speech lines are to be handled. Usually speech lines
are left aligned, but you may choose from the following:
Never - No left alignment of the rows in a single subtitle.
Always - All rows in a single subtitle will be aligned by their left border, and
with dash, all rows will be aligned by their left border, and then the overall
horizontal alignment will be applied.
All rows start with dashes - If all the rows in a single subtitle start with
dashes, then all rows will be aligned by their left border. At the same time the
overall horizontal alignment will be applied.
H. Pos. - defines the horizontal centering position. If 0 then it is in the very
center of the screen. Negative values put it to the left, positive values to the
right.
V. Pos. - defines the base vertical position, around which subtitles are
vertically aligned.
Vert. Spacing - defines the spacing between rows in a single subtitle page.

Rewind your program to the beginning and press Play. When the time for the
first subtitle to show comes, just press and hold down the Spacebar. The current
timecode is assigned automatically as the start time of the first subtitle, while it is
being displayed on the Preview or Program out (depending on your preview &
output settings). When you wish to hide the subtitle, just release the Spacebar.
The current timecode is automatically assigned as end time of the subtitle and the
second subtitle is prepared for timecode assignment. Repeat the procedure for
each subtitle that needs to be assigned a timecode. If you make a mistake, just
stop the transport. You may correct it by clicking on the wrong timecode and
correct it by hand, or just rewind the transport to the last correct subtitle and press
Play again. Then you can correct the wrong timecode values by reassigning them
using the Spacebar.
An interesting and quite useful feature is the integrated automatic text reader. It
calculates automatically the time needed for reading a particular subtitle, based on
your settings in Options menu Preferences Title tab Reading
speed.
The text reader is displayed in the State Control Panel as a red, yellow, and
green bar (eventually) with 2 markers:
When you press and hold the Spacebar, a brighter line begins to run from left to
right like this:
The red zone means that the time since you pressed the Spacebar is not enough
for the viewers to read the current subtitle and it is too early to hide it.
The yellow zone means the subtitle can be read at normal speed and you may
hide it whenever you like from now on.
When the progress bar reaches the green zone, the subtitle can be read even by
the slowest viewers, and it is advisable to hide it. However, there are certain cases
- 36 -
when you might want to hold it even longer than that, because of some
unexpected conditions (title, scene change, etc.).
When the timecodes are already assigned, there might be two tiny markers in the
text reader bar a blue and a yellow. They represent the actual end time of the
current subtitle (the blue arrow), and the actual start time of the next subtitle (the
yellow arrow). Thus, you get an idea about the interval between these subtitles,
and may decide whether to shorten or prolong the current one. You can do this by
dragging the blue arrow to the desired position. The yellow arrow cannot be
dragged!
NOTE: These markers are visible only when end time of the current subtitle and
start time of the next subtitle are already defined.

Edit
In order to link a subtitling project to a media file from AirBox, you should do
two things:
1) In File Properties you need to assign the video filename into the
TapeID field;
2) Save that subtitling project into the Watch Directory. You can browse for
the watch directory by pressing the yellow folder button in the lower right part of
this tab.

File Properties
Every SubtitlePlus project file holds a set of properties in it. You may review
these properties by selecting File | Properties
General Properties define what are the Program Title, Episode and
Language. You may define these for both the original program and the translated
one. You may also define the Program Start Timecode, User Bits and
Tape ID in order to automate further tape processing. If you click the <<Get
buttons the timecode or user bits from the tape will be taken automatically,
provided the transport is connected and the tape in question is loaded and
running. You may change the revision number, so it reminds you which file is
newer and better.
- 44 -
The Summary Properties will let you enter the names of the translator, editor,
producer, etc. people involved in this particular subtitling session.
Parts Properties let you keep track of all parts that make up the program.
This is quite useful if working for cinema source subtitling.

Optional Modules
SubtitlePlus is a modular software solution, allowing for flexible configuration,
according to customer requirements and budget limits. There are different
available bundles, each dedicated to the most common requirements. Please,
contact your SubtitlePlus reseller regarding availability and pricing.
LTC Reader
You may use this module to read LTC timecode from your transport device. Thus,
you can show subtitles based on an incoming timecode.
NOTE: If you need to use the LTC reader module, you should have a
DirectSound compatible sound card installed on your PC.
To enable the LTC reader, go to Devices menu TimeCode and select LTC
Reader (Wave Input).
The setup of this module is quite simple. Choose your sound card device from the
Wave In Device list. Select the Sample rate and Channels, and Start the module.
The currently input timecode is shown in the TimeCode string.
WARNING! Do not type any values in the Sample Rate string! Select only from
the Sample Rate drop-down list!

Genlocking
Professional
video
equipment
usually
works
synchronously, by using a master or reference timing
signal. This may be an actual video signal or blackburst.
Genlocking is typically accomplished by connecting a
cable from the master sync generator output to an input
on the device labelled Genlock In or BBin. The
genlocked device then generates each line and field of
video in time with the master sync signal. The sources
are then referred to as being synchronous.
