PROBLEM STATEMENT
In industries, tomography is used to describe the characteristic of components flows
using methods that are non-invasive as well as to determine the type of fluid (gas, liquid, solid) is
flowing through a pipeline. As one of electrical process tomography techniques, Electromagnetic
Tomography (EMT) also known as Magnetic Induction Tomography (MIT) has the unique
advantage that it employs magnetic inductance measurements to extract tomographic data related
to permeability and conductivity distributions [1]. The main elements of the tomographic
systems of EMT are split into three main sub-systems (sensor array, conditioning electronics and
host computer) [2-3]. These element functions were design for pipeline inspection. However, this
technique is involves the magnetic behavior where the flux line and sensitivity distribution in the
cross section of the pipe are invisible. Other than that, the development of EMT also requires lots
of experimental and researches that cost of money and time only to get best method and
instrument to get best pixel on image reconstruction. So, the best practice to start is through
simulation modelling in computer. The suitable software is by using COMSOL Multiphysics as
a tool to analysis and produces the distribution magnetic field in cross-section of pipe. This
software set the numerical simulation where is conducted through finite element method and
some reconstructed images are presented without any hardware attached. In order to achieve this
purpose, the following objectives have been derived.

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this project are:

1. To analysis the best method and instruments in Electromagnetic Tomography (EMT) for
pipeline imaging.
2. To design and develop a simulation modelling of the distribution magnetic field inside
the pipeline using COMSOL Multiphysics.
SCOPE OF STUDY
1. The investigation of Electromagnetic Tomography (EMT) for pipeline imagine is limited
to flux line & sensitivity distribution in the cross section of the pipe
2. The simulation modelling is by using COMSOL Multiphysics with finite element
method.
\
EXPECTED RESULT
This project is expected to develop simulation of imaging of the distribution magnetic
field inside the pipeline by using COMSOL Multiphysics. From the simulation it is also able to
get best method and instruments in EMT for pipeline imaging.
