Course Overview:
Cathodic protection is a mature technique for
controlling corrosion of steel structures
immersed in waters, buried in soils and
imbedded in concrete. This 5 ~ 10 days
advanced
course
thoroughly
and
systematically covers the fundamental
principles of cathodic protection and its
practical applications such as marine and
offshore structures in seawater environment,
storage tanks and pipelines buried in soils,
and reinforcing steels embedded in concrete
structures.
The course will provide detailed information
on cathodic protection specification, design,
commissioning, testing and monitoring.
Applicable standards such as NACE,
BS/ISO, AS and DnV relevant to cathodic
protection design will be discussed. State-ofthe-art anode materials for cathodic
protection will be presented. Participants will
gain advanced knowledge and skills in
cathodic protection of common types of steel
structures immersed in waters, buried in soils
and imbedded in concrete.
Included in the course notes are the 10-Steps
Guides in designing galvanic anode cathodic
protection system and impressed current
cathodic protection system.
Hands-on sections provide opportunities for
participants to operate the devices and
instruments used in cathodic protection.

Participants will learn the principles and
applications of advanced sensors and
monitoring systems for cathodic protection

Dr. Qiu is a NACE certified Corrosion
Specialist and a Fellow Member of the Institute
of Corrosion (UK). He is a Chartered Engineer
registered with the Engineering Council (UK),
a professional member of the Institute of
Materials, Minerals and Mining (UK).

Course Lecturer
Dr Qiu Jianhai BEng PhD CEng MIM FICorr

Dr Qiu obtained his BEng and PhD degrees

both in the field of corrosion. He has 30 years
of industry, university teaching, research and
consulting experience in areas of corrosion
and its prevention. He has been working
closely with both local and overseas
companies and has been an active consultant
to governmental agencies, multinational
companies and private organizations on
corrosion and materials related issues such as
corrosion design review, materials selection
and life prediction, corrosion inspection and
condition assessment, corrosion training,
corrosion testing and monitoring, troubleshooting and corrosion failure analysis.
Dr. Qiu is also experienced in providing
expert witness and assistance in litigation and
arbitration matters related to corrosion and
materials. He has authored about 120
technical papers and r e p o r t s . D r . Q i u
w a s a n i n v i t e d c o n t r i b u t i n g author
to the latest edition of ASM Handbook
