Our Tribute to Great Pioneers

JAMES CLERK MAXWELL

The founder of Electromagnetic theory
of Radiation. His theoretical prediction of
the existence of Electric and Magnetic
fields associated with wave propagation
carrying energy of electromagnetic
nature was a break through in the
history of science. A new era of
electromagnetism was thus opened by
this great scientist.

HEINRICH HERTZ
Experimentally demonstrated the
generation, propagation and detection
of electromagnetic waves. Thus he gave
a firm experimental support for the
theoretical conclusions drawn by
James Clerk Maxwell.

JAGADISH CHANDRA BOSE

The First Indian Scientist who marked
his footprints in the world of
Electromagnetics. In fact, Bose
generated millimeter waves using a
circuit developed in his laboratory and
used these waves for communication,
much earlier than the western
scientists. He also developed
microwave antennas (horns) which are
still considered to be ideal feeds

ABOUTDEPARTMENTOFELECTRONICS

THE UNIVERSITY OF COCHIN instituted the Department of

Electronics in the year 1975. This is envisaged as a
postgraduate Department with Masters degree and Ph.D.
programmes in frontier fields of electronics. The Department
wasinauguratedbyProf.M.G.K.Menonin1975.Realisingthe
growing needs of trained manpower in various fields of
Electronics, the University decided to start teaching
programmesintheDepartment,anticipatingformalapprovalof
the University Grants Commission, All India Council for
Technical Education etc. in due course. Initially, an M.Tech.
Coursewasstartedwithstudentstrengthof6.Thiscoursehas

work during this period will be supervised by senior
officers/scientists of these organizations as external guides.

1983,theAllIndiaCouncilforTechnicalEducation(AICTE)and
the University Grants Commission (UGC) extended financial
support to the M.Tech. course. Special allocations of funds
were granted for building, furniture, equipment, workshop,
library, and other essential requirements. All students

of Indias scholarship of Rs.2500/ per month. In 1985, the
studentstrengthhasbeenraisedfrom12to20inthegeneral
category and 3 to 5 in the sponsored category. The doctoral
programmes of the Department are mainly in the fields of
Ocean Electronics, Microwave propagation and Antennas,
Pattern recognition, Microprocessor applications, Signal
Processing, Neural Networks etc. External agencies like the
DepartmentofScienceandTechnology(Govt.ofIndia),Indian
Space Research Organization (ISRO), Council of Scientific and
