Tiger Football Fans:

I am so pleased to add my words of welcome to each of

you. This year marks the beginning of a new era in ONU Tiger
Football. Coach Don Lee has returned to his Alma Mater as our
head football coach.

Coach Lee brings a particularly strong set of qualifications

and attributes to his new position. He was a fine collegiate
player who possessed both personal skill and determination.
Don was also an exemplary member of the team – always will-
ing to help others and do whatever it took for the team to suc-
ceed. After his graduation from Olivet, he went on to become
a very fine assistant coach at the college level. This allowed
him to successfully make the transition from player to coach.
After a few years as an assistant, Coach Lee went on to become
a successful head coach. Step-by-step he has risen to the next
assignment.

However, Don Lee’s most appealing attribute to me, as presi-

dent of the University, transcends his football credentials and
abilities. It is his personal Christian character and his genuine
interest in the well-being of the student athletes he recruits and
coaches. Coach Lee has demonstrated his interest in the per-
sonal, academic and spiritual well-being of his players.

This commitment re-enforces the mission of intercollegiate

athletics as an integral and very visible part of Olivet’s education
and spiritual purpose. He understands that football teaches a
lot about life.

The 2009 football season will be exciting and I am so pleased

that each of you is part of the support team! Thanks for your
interest in Olivet Nazarene University.

Sincerely,

John C. Bowling
President (and fan!)

from the
Athletic Director
While studying at Olivet, Newsome par-
ticipated in both basketball and baseball. He was
a four-year starter in baseball and was the team’s
MVP his senior year and the team’s leading hitter
his junior year.
Newsome came home to ONU to become
the head baseball coach and to serve as the football
team’s defensive coordinator during the 1980 and
1981 school yeaers. Newsome’s 1981 baseball team
won a then-school record 21 baseball games and
earned a trip to the NAIA District 20 playoffs. For
his team’s accomplishments on the baseball field, he
was named the NAIA District 20 Coach of the Year.

HEAD COACH

Don Lee
Don Lee was named Olivet Nazarene University’s head football
coach on Thursday, December 18, 2008. Coach Lee is the seventh
head football coach in the program’s history.
Don Lee (’95) graduated from Olivet with a Bachelor of Science
degree in physical education. He also earned his master’s degree in
education administration from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar,
Mo., in 1999.
Lee played four seasons at Olivet Nazarene University (1990-1993),
where he was a three-year letterman as a defensive end for the Tigers.
For the past four seasons coach Lee has been the head football
coach at Belhaven College, an NAIA school located in Jackson, Miss.
In his second season as the Blazers’ head coach, he led them to a 7-4
record, the only season over .500 in the program’s history.
He is also extremely proud of the increase in graduating seniors
from 2005 through 2008. “In 2005 we graduated 11 seniors. Since then
we have seen 49 seniors graduate with their degrees,” he says. “I am
extremely proud to see our guys using football to get their education. Football does not last forever,
but their college degree will.”
Also, during the summer of 2007, Lee was an assistant coach for the Arizona Cardinals in their
pre-season mini-camp, where he worked with the offensive line and running backs.
Before he took over the reigns for Belhaven he served
as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator
in 2003 and 2004. Prior to arriving at Belhaven, coach
Lee was the linebackers coach at Cumberland College
in Kentucky during the 2002 season. From 1997-2001,
he served as defensive line coach at Southwest Baptist
University in Missouri and was named the school’s
“Recruiter of the Year” in 1998. Coach Lee spent the
1995-1997 seasons at Middle Georgia College as the
defensive ends coach, where the defense was ranked
seventh in the NJCAA in total defense during the 1995
season.
Coach Lee and his wife, Anitra, have one daughter,
Ka’Niyah, and one son, Don Jr.

9
offensive coordinator

Nate Brown
Nathan Brown returns to Olivet for his eighth season on the Tiger football
staff. The 2009 season will be his first as offensive coordinator.
Coach Lee is excited about Brown and welcomes him as offensive
coordinator. “I feel great about Nate as our play-caller and as the director of our
offense; he has a very firm grasp of what we are trying to do,” says Lee. “I know
our offensive attack is under good leadership and Nate is even adding a bit of his
own ‘flavor,’ which will only make it better.”
In addition to coaching at Olivet, Brown spent the 2006-2007 season
at Howard Payne University (Texas), where he was the defensive backs coach.
During that year, Howard Payne’s defense set the American Southwest Confer-
ence record for interceptions in a season (29). Brown also coached the ASC
Freshman Defensive Player of the Year.
Brown graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 2000, earn-
ing a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. While at MidAmerica, he was
a three-time letter winner for the successful Pioneer football program and was a
two-time NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete.
Nathan has earned both his Master of Arts in Teaching (2003) and Mas-
ter of Business Administration (2007) degrees from Olivet.
His wife, Chris, is also an alumna of ONU, earning her Master of Arts in
Teaching in 2005. They live with their son, Ozzie, in Bradley, Ill.

Defensive coordinator, Strength and Conditioning

Bobby Ladner
Bobby Ladner is entering his first year as the assistant head coach,
defensive coordinator, and strength & conditioning coach for the Tigers. He joins
new Tiger head football coach Don Lee, after serving as an assistant coach at
Belhaven for four years and playing four years under coach Lee.
Coach Ladner is excited about continuing his work with coach Lee at
ONU. “Working with coach Lee has helped me not only with my knowledge of the
game but has helped me grow as a person as well,” he says. “I am also proud to
be a part of an institution that strives to glorify Christ and impact lives everyday.”
After coaching alongside coach Ladner at Belhaven, Lee is thrilled to
have Ladner with him at Olivet. “I believe in what Bobby brings to the table as a
coach and as a leader. He has done a great job in years past and I cannot wait to
see what he does with the defense here at Olivet,” Lee says. “With a new sched-
ule and conference, under his leadership only time will tell how good it can be.”
Ladner was a four-year starter at defensive tackle for Belhaven College
from 2000-2003. During his career at Belhaven, Ladner amassed 252 tackles
and 36 sacks. He is currently the career sacks leader and second in all-time tack-
les with the Blazers.
Coach Ladner became an assistant coach for Belhaven College after
graduating in 2003. He served as the defensive line coach for three years and in
2008 was named the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. His final two
years were spent at Belhaven running the defense under the direction of Head
Coach Don Lee.

10
Recruiting Coordinator

Steve Wilt
Assistant coach Steve Wilt is beginning his third year on the ONU coach-
ing staff and first under new head coach Don Lee.
According to coach Lee, “I know our special teams will be in complete and total
control under the management of coach Wilt. I am confident in his experience
and know that this very important phase of the game will be a great asset to Tiger
football.”
In 2007, Gary Newsome added 21 years of collegiate head coaching
experience when he hired Steve Wilt to coach the Tigers’ coaching staff.
Wilt also serves as an instructor in the University’s Department of Exercise and
Sports Science.
Prior to taking the position on Newsome’s staff, Wilt was away from football
after 12 years as the head coach at Taylor University (Ind.). In his 12 years at
Taylor, Wilt went 45-79 overall and 28-45 in the Mid-States Football Association.
In 1997, his squad produced a 7-3 record — the best record for Taylor since
1989 and only the fifth time in team history that a Taylor team won seven or more
games.
That season started a three-year run that saw Taylor go 25-8 overall and
16-2 in the MSFA Midwest League. Wilt’s 1998 team went 8-3 and went 6-0 in
the MSFA Midwest League, winning the school’s second conference champion-
ship and making its first NAIA Championship Series appearance, falling 31-28 to
Azusa Pacific University (Calif.).
The 1999 squad reached an even higher level, with Taylor going 10-2 and fin-
ishing in a three-way tie, along with McKendree University (Ill.) and Olivet, for the
MSFA Midwest League Championship. Taylor also qualified for the NAIA Champi-
onship Series, winning their first-round game over Missouri Valley University, but
falling to Georgetown College (Ky.) in the second round.
Prior to Taylor moving to the MSFA Mideast, Wilt went 5-3 against Olivet in the
MSFA Midwest.
Before arriving at Taylor, Wilt spent nine years at the helm of Wingate Uni-
versity (N.C.), where he went 35-44. He started the football program and had
four nationally ranked teams. Wilt also served as an assistant coach at James
Madison University (Va.) and Shippensburg University (Pa.).

Wide Reciever coach

Deon Bates
Deon Bates is entering his first year as a graduate assistant and the wide
receivers coach for the Tigers. He joins new Tiger head football coach Don Lee
after serving as a recruiting specialist at Antonelli College in Jackson, Miss. Bates
is also a graduate of Belhaven College and former player of coach Don Lee.
Bates is excited about coaching along with coach Lee at ONU. “Being a
former player of coach Lee I understand the affect his program has on a young
man’s life. It’s more than just football, it’s helping you become a more successful
man in every aspect of life,” he says.
As a player Bates was a two-year transfer starter at defensive back for
Belhaven College from 2004-2005. During his career at Belhaven, he broke and
still currently holds the single season interceptions record and is second all-time
for interceptions with the Blazers.

11
Defensive Back coach

Chase moore
Chase Moore is beginning his first season as a graduate assistant coach
on the Olivet football staff. Moore will specialize in coaching the defensive backs.
Coach Moore will bring a fresh voice and new experience to the coaching
staff, translating his knowledge of the game into teaching, both in practice and
from the sideline.
Moore played four years (2005-08) for Olivet as a wide receiver and
running back. In 42 games played, Moore ended with 119 total rushing yards on
35 attempts (3.4 avg.) and one touchdown. As a receiver he caught 84 passes
for 755 yards (8.9 avg.) and five touchdowns. During his career, Moore caught
passes from two of the better quarterbacks in Olivet football history (Joe Boseo,
Derek Diehl) and ran alongside one of the best running backs in Tiger history
(Billy Lawrence).
Moore received his bachelor’s degree from Olivet in May 2009 and will
be working on his master’s degree.

Offense Line coach

Joe bendoraitis
Joe Bendoraitis began as an assistant on ONU the football staff in 2008.
A familiar name to the Mid-States Football Association ranks is set to join Don
Lee’s staff, as Bendoraitis enters this season with the Tigers as an assistant.
Coach Bendoraitis started his collegiate career as a middle linebacker for Il-
linois State University during the 2001-2002 seasons. He then transferred to
McKendree University, where he finished his college career. Bendoraitis who
played special teams in 2003, was a two-year starter at middle-linebacker for
McKendree during the 2004-2005 seasons. Following his junior and senior sea-
sons, Bendoraitis earned MSFA All-Midwest League honors and was a two-time
Scholar-Athlete.
On the field, Bendoraitis recorded 134 tackles, including 55 solo stops,
during his McKendree career. He also picked off four passes and registered four
sacks. Bendoraitis was a key member in helping McKendree post a 25-8 overall
and an 18-3 mark in the MSFA Midwest League. In all three years at McKendree,
Bendoraitis helped McKendree quailify for the NAIA Championship Series.
Since graduating, Bendoraitis has coached linebackers and running
backs at Manteno High School and Lincoln-Way East High School.

12
Defensive Line coach

sALEM sIMON iv
Salem Simon is beginning his first season on the ONU football staff un-
der the leadership of Don Lee. Simon brings not only a fresh face to the program
but a tremendous depth of experience and knowledge of the game.
Coach Simon hails from Cleveland, Ohio, and played his college ball at
Big Ten Conference Northwestern University, where he received his communica-
tions degree in 2001. However his career only began with the Wildcats. He went
on to start his professional career by signing as a free agent with the Baltimore
Ravens in the NFL in 2002 and played the preseason. In the spring of 2003 he
started as a defensive lineman for the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe. During
the fall of 2003 he was signed as a free agent by the NFL’s New York Jets and
played during their preseason and in the spring of same year went on to sign and
play OL/DL for the 2004 semifinalist Chicago Rush in the AFL.
Besides his professional playing career, coach Simon has much to offer
the Tigers from the sideline. From 2001-2003 he was hired as a Special Assistant
Coach for the South Euclid and Lyndhurst Schools in Ohio, coaching lineman
and providing technical awareness to other offense and defense line coaches.
In 2003 he went on to Benedictine High School in Ohio, his alma mater, to work
as the pass-rush technique coach, working with top defensive lineman. In 2004,
Simon went to Shaw High School in Ohio and was hired as an assistant coach,
working offensive and defensive linemen and also implementing game plans.
Most recently in 2005, coach Simon worked at Richmond Heights Middle School
in Ohio as the head coach and he also worked as a scout for the high school.
Simon is excited about his newest opportunity at ONU. He resides in Bourbon-
nais with his wife, Myia.

A Look Back
2008 Tiger Season

The Olivet Nazarene University football program finished the 2008

season with a win and a farewell for nine-year head coach Gary New-
some. In a 27-10 victory over the University of St. Francis (Ill.) the Tigers
were ableto cap the season with a win and close the coaching career of
Gary Newsome on a good note. Although the season ended with a 4-7
record, it was a season of highs and lows and the Tigers continued to
battle through the season.
A tough non-conference schedule and a very tough MSFA Midwest
conference schedule were big factors in the Tigers finishing the season
with a 4-7 (3-4) record. With a tough opening game loss down in Okla-
homa toSouthern Nazarene University 30-23 and a bounce back win in
on the road in overtime over Taylor University (Ind.) 27-20; the Tigers
knew that the year would provide its own trials and challenges. However,
they wouldn’t let these two games wear them down early allowing them
to survive the rollercoaster that the remainder of the season would bring.
A variety of factors led to the Tigers being forced to mix their experi-
ence base of players with some athletes not seasoned in college football
as of yet. But for the most part, the two groups meshed and the younger
players were able to gain valuable experience for the future. They also
matured quickly as numerous All-Conference selections were under-
classmen and make for a solid foundation for the future.
The transition will continue this season as a new coaching staff
will welcome a number of new faces to the roster. Familiar names will
be heavily counted on to provide leadership and expertise to once again
hopefully blend the team into a successful group in 2009. The building
blocks were put in place in 2008, it remains to see if the 2009 unit can
take another step towards the success they feel capable of achieving.

A Look Ahead
For the first time in ten years the Tigers will have a new face run-
ning things from the sideline as head coach. Appointed to the post in
January, Don Lee was hired after former head coach Gary Newsome
was moved into the post of Director of Athletics. Obviously, with a coach-
ing change comes a number of questions and concerns of what is ex-
pected and the impending changes that are about to be made. However,
anticipation and excitement arrives right alongside of that trepidation.
Lee has wasted no time since stepping on campus in establishing his
passion for the game of football and coaching it. Lee has also assem-
bled a determined staff that shares his desire to make the Olivet program
as good as it can be.
In 2009, the Tigers will look to make more strides after a year of
learning, but they won’t have any more of a break in schedule as they
16
switch sides of the MSFA to the Mideast side.
“I’m excited about this fall and this season after successful spring
practices,” Lee said.
If the average fan looks at the roster they will see considerably
more players on it this year, this is due to the efforts of the coaching staff
in the offseason.
“With a new coaching staff and new players we will have candi-
dates at a number of positions, and we need options to fill those.” Lee
said. “I’m excited to see who pulls away with each position in two-a-
days”.
Instead of dwelling on all of the change, the Tigers hope to use the
fresh start to their favor and move in the right direction and use experi-
ence on the roster to focus on the goal to become “family” and thrive.

Offense
In 2009, the biggest adjustment for the Tigers will be the change in-
offensive attack. Coach Lee and Offensive Coordinator Nate Brown are
enthusiastic about the Spread “Air Raid” offense they are implementing.
It is much different than the balanced pass and run offense that
Olivet has utilized in the past, trying to control possession time and keep
the defense off the field. The new offense is built to score quick and
often, forcing the opponent to have its offense play the same way, allow-
ing the Tiger defense to potentially to take advantage of the opposing
offense’s mistakes.
In spring workouts, the Tiger coaching staff has done a very nice
job of selling its plans to the players, because in order to get the best
out of any offense, coaches have to have players execute what they are
teaching. They hope that the time spent will prove well when games start
and push comes to shove and the unique offensive attack is put to the
test.
Olivet’s 2008 offensive attack struggled at times last season mus-
tering just 17.8 points per game and only 281 yards. If the “Air Raid”
offense meets its goals, the “Air Raid” offense hopes to throw the ball
95 percent of the time. In doing that, hopefully both the points per game
and yardage averages will jump considerably.
“I like to pass 95 percent of the time and think about it the other
5,”Lee said. “I know there are some good (running) backs here and I’ve
already told them that the passing game really opens up the running
game.”
With the increased passing game, many would think that it would
hurt, but Lee believes it will help the ground game.

17
The Tiger running game totaled 1,385 total yards on 381 attempts
and 13 touchdowns compared to the passing totals of 1,706 yards, 319
passing attempts, and 10 touchdowns. The new offensive averages will
likely lean very heavily toward the passing game in total yards, yards per
game, yards per catch, passing attempts, and touchdowns but because
of the increase in total possessions, the running game will likely see an
increase in yards per game, attempts, and touchdowns, etc.
Lee’s offensive philosophy works on the foundation that the ground
game will open up because opponents will be focused on the numerous
three and four wide receiver sets that Coach Brown calls, and the back-
field will naturally open up due to the opponent’s defensive alignments
being concentrated on slowing down the pass attack.
In order for the Tigers to take their extreme passing game to the
championship level it hopes to reach, it will have to use some of the
weapons it already has available.
The Tigers also return a wealth of experience out of their wide re-
ceiver core. Out of the 13 pass catchers last season, 11 return for the
2009 campaign and will return ready to perform in a system designed
for them. 173 receptions, 1706 total yards, a 9.9 yards per catch aver-
age, and 10 touchdowns returns out of this group, and with the offensive
change these numbers should increase considerably. The receivers are
the backbone of this offense and its success hinges heavily on their con-
sistency.
Maybe the most important group on the offensive side of the ball
is the line, but in 2009 the players who will allow this offense to run
smoothly without error will be the offensive line. They will help make sure
the Spread offense, that sometimes only has five linemen blocking for
the quarterback, will protect and help score large amounts of points. In
2008, opponents totaled 22 sacks for a loss of 149 yards, and the line
helped gain 1,385 rushing yards, and protect for 1,706 passing yards.
At quarterback for the Tigers, Coach Lee will decide in two-a-days
who will be “under center” manning the offense.
He will look for open competition and feels it will improve the posi-
tion. In 2008, the quarterback position had an efficiency of 101.98, threw
for a 54.2 percent completion ratio, 1,706 yards, and 10 touchdowns.
The spread offense under Lee will ask its quarterback to be the leader
and enormous responsibility will upon his shoulders to perform and to
perform with excellence.

Defense
With all the attention on the offense, the Tiger defense will still need

18
to be very solid against opponents this season. Under the leadership of
Defensive Coordinator Bobby Ladner, Coach Lee is confident everything
will be done to insure that it happens. After a season in which a young
defense gave up 306 points, for a 27.6 point per game average, and 369
yards per game, a better, more prepared defense will look to bounce
back this season. With an offense that can hopefully score at anytime in
30s or 40s, the defense may be asked to only prevent high scoring quar-
ters, but Lee and his staff want to create turnovers and more posses-
sions for the offense.
The Tigers will run a 4-3 base defense and will look to be on the
field for only short periods of time because of the aggressive plan of at-
tack the team expects to employ.
“We like to create confusion for blocking schemes by stunting,
dropping linemen into pass coverage and blitzing frequently,” Lee said.
This type of defensive approach will keep other offenses on their
toes and keep them guessing which typically calls for more “three and
outs” and more attempts and scoring quickly with the Spread offense.
“Our offense and defense are designed for one another, they are
perfect because of how they benefit each other and the freedom each al-
lows the other,” Lee said.

In 2008, the Tiger defense wasn’t able to do either; a few occasions

giving 61 and 43 points in back-to-back weeks and only scoring six com-
bined points. Although they were playing two nationally ranked oppo-
nents, but with the Spread offense and the attack-style defense, games
will be higher scoring and will likely be closer.
One of the more consistent positions for the Tigers in 2008 was the
linebacking unit which was solid the entire year and will look to fill a few
holes next to a couple of mainstays. In this defense the linebackers will
be asked to blitz and blitz hard, but also be able to drop back and be able
to cover with good hands and look to create turnovers.
In the secondary the Tigers will return a wealth of experience, tal-
ent, and statistics. Out of the eight players who saw consistent time,
seven are returning for this season.
The secondary was quick, elusive, and unpredictable against of-
fenses and will be asked to do more this season. Overall, the ONU de-
fense will have a stronghold out of the safeties and cornerbacks.
Against any offense a defense has to have a very good “front” that
establishes the defensive unit, and the Tigers are no exception to that
rule. Because of the transition in defensive philosophy, the number of

19
times Coach Ladner will stunt and blitz will be increased, and the defen-
sive line will have a large task at hand throughout the season. The Ti-
gers have a solid foundation at this position ready to compete.
“I’m very excited to see Coach Ladner and the defense come to-
gether this season, it is crucial that each plays his part and buys in to
what we are doing,” Lee said.

Special Teams
Coach Lee can’t emphasize how important the special teams phase
of the game is, and how quality Tiger special teams will be in ’09 after a
very good 2008 season. Under the leadership of assistant coach Steve
Wilt, the utilization of the Spread offense and desire to score quickly,
Wilt’s charges will be asked to control field position as that becomes
considerably much more crucial. Also, with the higher number of posses-
sions, the number of punts and kickoffs will increase and good field posi-
tion for the defense will also be very significant to stopping opponents.
Along with field position, the return game can prove to be a very es-
sential element to the overall game plan. Also, success in this area will
lead to more efficient possessions and quicker scoring attacks. In addi-
tion, special teams can cause turnovers allowing more possessions and
possibly more points, keeping the offense off the field completely and
giving them more rest. Plus, with good field position and a fast-moving
offense, field goals become more relevant and easier to attempt, put-
ting more points on the board and piling more pressure on the opponent.
Last season the Tigers split the return game and may do the same this
year.
In 2008, the kickoff game was solid totaling 2,184 yards on 38 at-
tempts for an average 57.5 yards per kick. The Tigers averaged less
than 3.5 kickoffs per game and will look to have between four and six
each game this season. The Tigers attempted 11 field goals convert-
ing six, and had a successful long kick of 36 yards. The punting game
was very solid; totaling 2,201 yards on 62 attempts for a 35.5 yard aver-
age. The punt team also put 18 inside the 20 yard line and had only two
blocked. The most encouraging thing about the kicking game is that the
Tigers will return experience in the kicking game.

The Schedule
First to note, the Tigers will have a little different look to their sched-
ule this year, for the first time since 1994, when the MSFA began, ONU
will compete in the Mideast division of the MSFA conference instead of
the Midwest. ONU will begin the 2009 campaign with back-to-back home
contests against non-conference teams. The first of which will come
against long-time foe McKendree University (Ill.) on September 5th, and

20
the second contest will be played against first-time opponent, the West
Virginia University Institute of Technology on September 12th. Follow-
ing the first two home games, the Tigers will travel north on September
19th to battle MSFA Mideast foe St. Xavier University (Ill.) and then come
back home the next week on September 26th against a very strong non-
conference opponent Southern Nazarene University (Okla.). The Tigers
will look to get back the game against the Crimson Storm in which they
lead most of the game last season.
The following Saturday, October 3rd the Tigers will continue confer-
ence play in Ohio at beautiful Fawcett Stadium against Walsh University
(Ohio) and stay on the road the next week on October 10th against long-
time MSFA foe Trinity International University (Ill.). On October 17th the
Tigers will be back in action at Ward Field to take on the Knights of Mar-
ian College (Ind.) in a conference game. In the last two Saturdays of
October Olivet will travel to both the University of St. Francis (Ill.) on the
24th for their final non-conference game and then on the 31st to the Uni-
versity of St. Francis (Ind.) for a conference game against the NAIA pow-
erhouse.
With the last two weeks of the regular season just like the first, the
Tigers having back to back home games, ONU will look to take advan-
tage of good scheduling. First on November 7th, during Homecoming
festivities, the Tigers play host to MSFA foe Taylor University (Ind.) and
for the final week of the year the Tigers will host another NAIA power-
house, Malone University (Ohio) on November 14th.
Unlike most years, transition isn’t the situation at hand, but for the
2009 Olivet Nazarene University Tiger Football program that is very
much what is in front of them. However, they have the choice to do with
it what they want, make it work for them or against them, and according
to Coach Lee, “we want our team to be a family first and foremost, every-
thing else will fall into place.”
