The Revelation (396)

yousuf mahbubul Islam, PhD

When you accidentally meet and, suddenly recognize, an old acquaintance, after many years of
losing contact, what happens? You may see a light of recognition in your friends eyes. How do
you feel when you see this light? Does it make you feel happy that you have been
remembered or recognized? Why?
It may be that the friend gives you value as a person, likes or admires your personality,
appreciates a quality in you or maybe just likes your company. Regardless, your friend has
recognized you as the unique individual that he/she used to know. Your friend recognizes you as
he/she is mentally able to separate and identify you from the others that he/she knows. This
particular skill of analytically being able to separate one from another is a special skill that
humans have.
So humans have an ability to distinctly separate and thus recognize and, acknowledge. It is the
deliberate application of this ability that the Creator repeatedly questions in the Quran. For
example, study the following Verse from the Holy Quran:
Then, is he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth
like one who is blind? They will only be reminded who are people of understanding.
[13.19]
What exactly is above Verse asking? Lets pick out a few keywords revealed, truth, blind,
reminded and, people of understanding. So, stating the keywords in another way, people of
understanding need to work out that the revelation (or Verses given to the Prophet) is from the
Creator a person who cannot analytically work this out is like a blind person who cannot see
what is in front of him/her. How should one who realizes that the words given in the Quran are
words directly sent by the Creator, react? As an analogy, what would happen, if, for example, a
Mercedes Benz were able to realize that the manual provided was given by its manufacturer?
As explained in the Quran,
Allah has revealed (from time to time) the most beautiful message (Verses, now
compiled) in the form of a Book consistent with itself (yet) repeating (its teaching in
various aspects): the skins of those who fear their Lord tremble thereat (when they
realize these words are direct from the Creator); then their skins and their hearts do
soften to the celebration of Allah's praises. Such is the guidance of Allah: He guides
therewith whom He pleases but such as Allah leaves to stray can have none to guide.
[39.23]
If one is able to realize that the Quran is not like other books, i.e., it contains content and
instructions directly sent by the persons Maker, what may happen? At the time of realization,
the heart of the person would first tremble in fear. Then, when the person realizes that it is the
Maker Himself who has given the ability to read and comprehend, his/her heart would soften in
praise of such a Creator. The heart and mind would light up as a variety of realizations would
dawn upon the person, e.g., my Maker has made me unique and beautiful; He has given me
sight, intelligence and feelings; everything I can see and feel is made by Him; He has given me
the ability to read and reflect; He is my Sustainer and looks after all outcomes; He is the One
who protects me; He is one who has made my soul and given me the opportunity to know Him
and be grateful!

If the painting Mona Lisa itself were able to realize that it has been made by Leonardo, what
attitude and feelings should it develop towards Him? While thinking about Leonardo, the
painting could reflect on the fact that she is among the most valuable paintings on the earth.
However, the fact is that Mona Lisa is without intelligence and therefore currently totally in the
dark about Leonardo. If it were given intelligence and the ability to realize the truth about
Leonardo, would it move from totally being in the dark about Leonardo into the light? The
purpose of sending revelation to mankind is similar to bring humans out of the darkness into
the light. So, together with the revealed Verses, we are guided about the purpose of revelation.

14.1 Alif Lam Ra. (These are Verses of the) Book which We have revealed to you
(O, Muhammad) in order that you may lead mankind out of the depths of darkness
into light by the Permission of their Lord to the path (i.e., to reflect about the) One
who is exalted in Power, worthy of all Praise!
Who is exalted in Power and worthy of all Praise?

14.2 Allah, to Whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and on the earth! But
woe (and warning) to the disbelievers of a terrible penalty, (i.e., a severe
punishment that disbelief would bring)!
As the Creator of everything, and Sustainer, Allah is our Owner, as well as the Owner of
everything else. What would He do to those who do not believe in the qualities and attributes of
the Creator? Who are the people who disbelieve?

14.3 The ones who prefer the worldly life more than the Hereafter and who
thereby misguide (themselves and other men) from the Path of Allah, seeking to
make the direct Path to Allah something crooked. They are in extreme error.
The purpose of the current life on earth is to separate those who wish to satisfy their egos as
opposed to those who wish to turn to the Creator and love Him for the life that He has given.
The following Verse clarifies the purpose of our temporary sojourn on earth.
In order that Allah may separate the impure from the pure put the impure one on
another heap them together and cast them into hell. They will be the ones to have lost.
[8.37]
To avoid being cast with the impure, i.e., those who are arrogant and ungrateful, Allah has
revealed His Words through messengers throughout the ages.

14.4 We sent an apostle except (for no other purpose than to teach) in the
language of his (own) people in order to make (things) clear to them. Now Allah
leaves straying those whom He pleases and guides whom He pleases, and He is
Exalted in power Full of Wisdom.
The purpose of revelation is a blessing to guide mankind. It is with Allahs pleasure that
Guidance has been sent. However, those who refuse to take this Guidance, Allah will not
forcefully guide. For example,

14.5 We sent Moses with Our Signs (Verses and the command) "Bring your
people from the depths of darkness into light and teach them to remember the
Days of Allah (Special blessings given to the people of Moses)." Verily in this
there are Signs for such as are firmly patient and constant, grateful and
appreciative.
