where otherwise stated. As an alternative sufficiently rigid steel/ply board shuttering of
approved design may be used. Joints of the shuttering must not allow loss of liquid from
concrete. In timber shuttering the joints shall therefore be either tongued or grooved or the
joints must be perfectly closed and lined with craft paper or other types of approved
materials. All shuttering and framing must be adequately stayed and braced to the
satisfaction of the Owner/Architects for properly supporting the concrete during the period
of hardening. The forms shall have sufficient strength and rigidity to hold concrete and
withstand the pressure of ramming and vibration without deflection from the prescribed
lines and levels. The vertical shuttering shall be carried down to such solid surface as is
sufficiently strong to afford adequate support and shall remain in position until the newly
constructed work is able to support itself. Props shall be securely braced against lateral
deflection. Steel props of approved quality shall be used. In case timber props and bullies are
allowed to use these shall be of minimum 10 cm diameter and shall be straight and
adequately strong. Bamboo props shall not be used.

the works test cube failing to attain specified strength due to poor workmanship like
honeycombing etc. or any reason accounting to negligence on the part of the contractor
then the Owner's/Architect's decision regarding dismantling, of such concrete or
rectification if concrete is allowed to be retained in its place shall be final and binding on the
contractor. Where honeycombed surface are noticed in the concrete, the contractor shall
not patch up the same until examined by the Owner/Architects and decision given regarding
the acceptance with rectification or rejection of the same. If the contractor patches up such
defects without the knowledge of the Owner/Architects the Owner/Architects will be at
liberty to order demolition of the concerned concrete members to the extent they consider
necessary. In such case, the contractor at his expense, shall demolish and reconstruct
defective work. The demolished work shall not be measured and paid for.

cm) and over and 1 part of cement to 4 parts of approved sand for half brick thick and brick
on edge walls.
32. All brick shall be immersed in water for 24 hours before being put into work so that they will
be saturated and will not absorb water from the mortar.
33. The bricks shall be laid in mortar to line, level and shapes shown on the plan, slightly pressed
and thoroughly bedded in mortar and all joints shall be properly flushed and packed with
mortar so that they will be completely filled with mortar and no hollows left anywhere. The
verticality of the walls and horizontality of the courses shall be checked very often with
plumb bob and spirit level respectively.
34. Joints shall not exceed 10 mm (about 3/8") in thickness and this thickness shall be uniform
throughout. The joints shall be raked out not less than 10mm (about 3/l8") deep when the
mortar is green where pointing is to be done. When the brick surface are to be plastered,
the joints shall be raked to a depth of 5 mm when the mortar is green, so as to provide good
key to plaster.
35. All brick works shall be kept well watered for l4 days after laying. While pozzalana cement is
used for mortar the curing shall be extended by one week at contractors expense.
I. HOLD FAST FOR DOOR FRAMES
36. For Door frame, three holdfasts shall be fixed to each post of the door frame. The M.S.
holdfasts shall be of the size as directed by Architect shall be fixed to the fames by means of

with horizontal pieces over which scaffolding planks shall be fixed. For all other work in
buildings, single scaffolding shall be permitted. In such cases the inner end of the horizontal
scaffolding pole shall rest in a hole provided only in the header course for the purpose. Only
one header for each pole shall be left out.
38. The walls to be plastered to have all joints raked out to a depth of 10 mm, if not already
done. R.C.C surface shall be properly hacked to get good key to the plaster. All dust and oily
matter, if any, shall be brushed and cleaned and surface to be plastered shall be kept wet for
6 hours before plastering is commenced.
39. Ceiling plaster shall be completed before commencement of wall plaster. Plastering shall be
started from the top and worked down towards the floor. All putlog holes shall be properly
filled in advance of the plastering as the scaffolding is being taken down. To ensure even
thickness and a true surface, plaster about 15 15 cm shall be first applied, horizontally and
vertically, at not more than 2 metres intervals over the entire surface to serve as gauges. The
surfaces of these gauged areas shall be truly in the plane of the finished plaster surface. The
mortar shall then be laid on the wall, between the gauges with trowel. The mortar shall be
applied in a uniform surface slightly more than the specified thickness. This shall be brought
to a true surface, by working a wooden straight edge reaching across the gauges, with small
upward and sideways movements at a time. Finally the surface shall be finished off true
with trowel or wooden float according as a smooth or a sandy granular texture is required.
All corners, arises, angles and junctions shall be truly vertical or horizontal as the case may
be and shall be carefully finished. Rounding or chamfering corners, arises, provision of
grooves at junctions etc. where required shall be done without any extra payment. Such
rounding, chamfering or grooving shall be carried out with proper templates or battens to
the sizes required.
40. When suspending work at the end of the day, the plaster shall be left, cut clean to line both
horizontally and vertically. When recommencing the plastering, the edge of the old work
shall be scrapped cleaned and wetted with cement slurry before plaster is applied to the
adjacent areas, to enable the two to properly join together. Plastering work shall be closed
at the end of the day on the body of wall and not nearer than 15 cm to any corners or arises.
It shall not be closed on the body of the features such as plasters, bands and cornices, nor at
the corners of arises. Horizontal joints in plaster work shall not also occur on parapet tops
and copings as these invariably lead to leakages. The plastering and finishing shall be
completed within half an hour of adding water to the dry mortar.
41. Curing shall be started as soon as the plaster has hardened sufficiently not to be damaged
when watered. The plaster shall be kept wet for a period of at least 7 days. During this
period, it shall be suitably protected from all damages at the contractors expense by such
means as the Engineer-in-Charge may approve. The dates on which the plastering is done
shall be legibly marked on the various sections plastered so that curing for the specified
period thereafter can be watched.
42. The plaster shall be finished to a true and plumb surface and to the proper degree of
smoothness as required. The work shall be tested frequently as the work proceeds with a
true straight edge not less than 2.5 m long and with plumb bobs. All horizontal lines and
Page 5 of 7

Multibuild Consultants, Vapi

surfaces shall be tested with a level and all jambs and corners with a plumb bob as the work
proceeds.
43. Any cracks which appear in the surface and all portions which sound hollow when tapped, or
are found to be soft or otherwise defective, shall be cut out in rectangular shape and redone
as directed by the Engineer-in-Charge.
44. External plaster of 20mm thick shall in two coats. Generally coarse sand shall be used for the
under coat and fine sand for the finishing coat. The plaster shall be applied in two coats i.e.
12 mm under coat and then 8 mm finishing coat and shall have an average total thickness of
not less than 20 mm. The finishing coat shall be applied after the under coat has sufficiently
set but not dried and in any case within 48 hours.
K. WATER PROFFING OVER ROOF & SUNKEN SLAB
45. Before taking up the water proofing work the construction of parapet walls, including
finishing should be completed. Similarly, the ancillary items like fixing up of all down take
pipes, water pipes and electric conduits etc. should be completed and no such work should
be allowed on the area to be treated during the progress of water proofing treatment or
even later.
46. The surface of the slab should be roughened by scrapping when the slab concrete is still
green, however, the surface need not be hacked. In case the slab is already cast and surface
fairly finished, the same shall be cleaned neatly of all mortar droppings, loose materials etc.
with brooms/cloth.
47. Providing and Laying of Slurry under Base Coat - The quantity of water required to prepare
the slurry with 2.75 kg. of blended cement + water proofing compound as per manufacturer
specification to be painted over an area of 1 sq m. Depending upon the area of surface that
has to be covered, the required quantity of slurry should be prepared using 2.75 kg. blended
cement + water per sq. m. area to be covered, taking particular care to see that only that
much quantity of slurry shall be prepared which can be used within half an hour of
preparation i.e. before the initial setting time of cement. The prepared slurry shall be
applied over the dampened surface with brushes very carefully, including the joints between
the floor slab and the parapet wall, holes on the surfaces, joints of pipes, masonry/concrete
etc. The application of the slurry should continue up to a height of 300 mm on the parapet
wall. Slurry should also be applied up to a height of 150 mm over pipe projections etc.
48. Laying Base Coat 20 mm thick - Immediately after the application of slurry and when the
application is still green, 20 mm thick cement plaster as base coat with cement mortar 1:5 (1
blended cement: 5 coarse sand) shall be evenly applied over the concrete surface taking
particular care to see that all the corners and joints are properly packed and the application
of the base coat shall be continued up to a height of 300 mm over the parapet wall.
49. Laying Brick Bat Coba - Brick bat of size 25 mm to 115 mm out of well burnt bricks shall be
used for the purpose of brick bat coba. The brick bats shall be properly dampened for six
hours before laying. Brick bats shall be laid to required slope/gradient over the base coat of
mortar leaving 15-25 mm gap between two bats. Cement mortar 1:5 (1 blended cement: 5
coarse sand) shall be poured over the brick bats and joints filled properly. Under no
circumstances dry brick bats should be laid over the base coat. The haunches/vata at the
junction of parapet wall and the roof shall be formed only with brick bat coba. In case the
brick bat coba is laid on the base coat immediately on initial set there will be no necessity of
applying cement slurry over the base coat before laying the brick bat coba. However, if the
brick bat coba is to be laid on the subsequent day, cement slurry prepared as described
above shall be applied over the top surface of the base coat, and then only the brick bat
coba shall be laid.
50. After two days of curing of brick bat coba cement slurry prepared as applied in 1st layer shall
be applied on the surface of brick bat coba The application of slurry shall be the same as
Page 6 of 7

Multibuild Consultants, Vapi

described above which should cover the haunches/vata, and the remaining small portion of
parapet wall and also inside the groove of parapet wall. Immediately on applying the cement
slurry over the surface of the brick bat coba and when the slurry applied is still green, the
fibre glass cloth shall be spread evenly on the surface without any kink & pressed to see that
no air spaces exist. 20 mm thick layer of cement plaster, without leaving any joints shall be
applied with cement mortar 1:4 (1 blended cement: 4 coarse sand) over the entire fibre
glass cloth including the haunches/vata and the small portion on the parapet wall. The
surface of the finishing layer (protective coat) shall be neatly finished with cement slurry
prepared as mentioned above. The finished surface shall be allowed to dry.
51. The entire surface thus treated shall be flooded with water by making kiaries with weak
cement mortar, for a minimum period of two weeks.
52. The average thickness of brick bat coba shall not be more than 100 mm.
53. Water Proofing in sunken Slab - The water proofing procedure mentioned in water proofing
of terrace shall be applied for sunken slab. The remaining sunk depth shall be filled with
chharu or equivalent light weight material which shall be confirmed by Architect.
L. Standard Specification:
