REACTION ENTHALPY CHANGE

1. Objective
o To determine the enthalpy change from the reaction of sodium hydroxide
and hydrochloric acid result in one mode of water according to the following
equation:

NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq)NaCl(aq) + H2O(l)

2. Tools and Material

o Beaker glass (2 pc)
o Graduated cylinder (2 pc)
o Thermometer 0 – 100 °C (1 pc)
o 1 M NaOH Solution (50mL)
o 1 M HCl Solution (50 mL)
o Pipette (2 pc)
o Spatula (1 pc)

3. Procedure
1) Take 50 ml NaOH solution to the graduated cylinder with pipette.
2) Pour it into a beaker glass.
3) Check the temperature with thermometer and record it.
4) Take 50 ml HCl solution to the graduated cylinder and repeat procedures 2 and 3.
5) Pour HCl solution into NaOH solution and stir it with spatula.
6) And quickly after that, measure the temperature with thermometer, and record it.

4. Experiment Result

Name Temperature
HCl 28 °C
NaOH 27 °C
Product 30 °C

5. Questions

Chemistry Experiment Report

1. Why the thermometer should be cleaned & dried before it’s used to measure
different solution?
Answer: Because if the thermometer isn’t cleaned & dried after it’s used, the accuracy
when measuring the other substance won’t be accurate. Because the last temperature
measured is still counted.
2. How to determine the enthalpy change from this activity after the initial
temperature and the mixture temperature are measured?
Answer:

mc ∆ T
∆ H=
mmol
3. If the initial temperature is not the same, how would you handle that?
Answer: If the initial temperature is not same, we use a weighted average of each
reactant's temperature as the initial temperature.
4. Find the enthalpy change of neutralization!
Answer:
Known:
HCl : 1 M x 50 ml = 50 mmol
NaOH : 1 M x 50 ml = 50 mmol
Mass : 50 + 50 = 100 ml
Initial temperature : (28 ⁰C + 27 ⁰C) ÷ 2 = 27.5 ⁰C
∆ C=30 ℃−27.5℃ =2.5℃
c=4.2 J /g ℃
Question:
∆ H ° neutralization=… ?
Solution:
mc ∆ T
∆ H=
mmol
100 × 4.2 x 2.5
∆ H= =21 kJ /mol
50
5. Give its thermo-chemistry equation!
Answer:

NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) ∆ H =−21 kJ /mol
