The Gap Year
Every year, thousands of students take a gap year similar to a years holiday before they go to
university. Others take their gap year after university, before they start looking for a job. This idea
has become very popular in Britain and Ireland, and 200,000 students took a gap year last year.
What do these students do during the year? Many of them do voluntary work, and others travel
around the world. They definitely return with some fantastic memories! Some students who want to
find a travelling partner post messages on websites. You can also read their travel blogs as theyre
going round the world or contact gappers who have returned to ask them questions about their
experiences.
Robert, 18, has just decided to take a gap year before he goes to London University. Hes never
travelled before, so he feels a little nervous. Ill probably do voluntary work in The US, he says. I
want to go to a place where I can speak the language. Im interested in working in a National Park,
because Im going to study geography at university. You need to offer a specific skill and Im good
at horse riding so I want to work as a horse riding instructor.
Tamsin, 19, has just returned from her gap year. She has visited Europe, Africa and Asia. Tamsin
travelled with her best friend Lizzie, and they had different jobs while they were going around the
world. Ive been a waitress, and Ive taught English in a small school in Kenya. The best thing
Ive learnt is to be more responsible. Ive made a lot of friends during my gap year. It was a
fantastic experience and I definitely recommend it! The highlight was probably walking the Silk
Road. It starts in Turkey and finishes at the Great Wall of China. It took us fifteen weeks to
complete, but we saw amazing scenery, including mud volcanoes and underground lakes.
