HIKING the Jesus Trail
Begin in bustling Nazareth, boyhood home of Jesus. Take one day to explore
Nazareth and prepare supplies for your walk. Plan your walking days as follows:
DAY 1: Nazareth to Cana via Zippori, 13.4 km, +3 km if entering park (J1-2)
DAY 2: Cana to Kibbutz Lavi, 14.4 km (J3)
DAY 3: Kibbutz Lavi to Moshav Arbel, 15.7 km (J4-5)
DAY 4: Moshav Arbel to Capernaum via Mount of Beatitudes, 18.8 km (J6-J9)
Extend this itinerary with #2 (+4-5 days), #3 (+5 days) or #5 (+7 days).

Beginning at the Basilica of the Annunciation, the trail enters the
Old City market through a stone-arched entryway (see Nazareth
Admission Fees: Old City and Downtown map p. 59). The trail is informally
Zippori NP. marked with large orange dots through the market. Walk past
the White Mosque and continue through the bride’s market. The

It isn’t possible to
trail climbs out of Nazareth by way of 406 steps, where the trail is

stairs. Instead ride with a view of the forested hill of Zippori in the valley. At a traffic
up HaGalil Street to circle, the trail turns left and leaves Nazareth through a suburb,

However, if you are eager to test your hunting and gathering skills, the best way
to de-thorn the fruit is to pick one up with paper or thick cloth and roll it in
the dirt until the skin is smooth. Then cut the skin lengthwise and peel. Chew
carefully, as the fruit is full of hard seeds. Cactus fruit is in season in summer,
and at its most tasty when golden yellow in color; red fruits have become over-
ripe in the sun.
The plant is known in Hebrew as Tsabar, and a variation of the word, sabra,
became widely used as a term for native-born Israelis who were considered
“tough on the outside, but sweet on the inside.” The name in Arabic is similar,
Sabr, which means “patience.”
