DALLAS ARCHITECTS RECOGNIZED AT 2015 AIA DALLAS
BUILT DESIGN AWARDS
SEVEN PROJECTS LAUDED FOR DESIGN EXCELLENCE

Dallas)hasselectedsevendesignstoreceive2015BuiltDesignAwards,thehighestrecognition
ofworksthatexemplifyexcellenceinbuiltprojectsbyDallasarchitects.

Thisyearsrecipientswereselectedbyajurycomposedofnationallyrenownedarchitects,
SharonJohnston,FAIA,founderandprincipalatJohnstonMarklee,ColinNeufeld,principalat
5468796Architecture,andAminTadj,ofNADAAA.Thejurydeliberatedovermorethan60
entriesandselectedthefinalrecipientsbasedoneachdesignsresponsetoitscultural,social,
environmental,andcontextualchallenges.

Theselectedprojectscommunicatecreativeresponsetoprogramandsiteconditionsacross
typologiesandscale,saidHeathMay,2015AIADesignAwardschairandviceprincipalatHKS.
Icongratulatetheawardrecipientsfordemonstratingthevalueofdesignandenhancingthe
qualityoflifethroughtheirpractice.

Thewinners,whichwereannouncedatlasteveningsawardsceremonyatthePerotMuseumof
NatureandScience,are:

ClearforkCampus,CunninghamArchitects,FortWorth,TX(29,100squarefeet):
Anchoringthecornerofarapidlyexpandingmixedusedevelopmentwithintenmilesof
thecitysurbancore,theClearforkCampusseekstointerpretthehistoryoftheranch
landthatonceoccupieditsenvirons.Conceivedasatightlykniturbancampgroundfor
itsinhabitants,theofficeandathleticcampusiscomposedofthreebuildingslinkedby
outdoorspaces.

TheRichardsGroup,Perkins+Will,Dallas,TX(550,000squarefeet):LocatedintheWest
Villagearea,the18storybuildingwasdesignedtoofferanofficeplanwithmaximum
flexibilityandopennessbyusinganoffsetelevatorcoreinsteadofamoreconventional
centercorelayout.Centraltothebuildingdesignisathreestorystairwellatriumthat
encouragesphysicalactivityandallowsthecompanytocontinueitslongstanding
traditionofstairwellmeetings,thegatheringofsome700employeesforimportant
announcementsandintroductions.

NewParklandHospital,HDR+Corgan,Dallas,TX(1,900,000squarefeet):TheNew
ParklandHospitalpromotesexcellenceinclinicalcare,teaching,andresearchina
technologicallyadvancedandeasilyaccessibleenvironmentwhichincludes862private
patientbeds,27operatingrooms,and96privatenewbornICUbeds.Themasterplan
wasdevelopedtoaddressthediverseneedsofthepeoplewhoexperienceParkland
daily.

HouseofOlympicProportions,ShipleyArchitects,PortTownsend,WA(2,900square
feet):ThesiteislocatedonthenortheasttipofWashingtonsOlympicPeninsula
overlookingthenorthernwatersofPugetSound.Thelotishillsidewithfourexistingfir
treeswhichthehousewasdesignedaround.Thehouseisorientednotonlytothe
dramaticoceanviewbutalsotothesiteitselfwithwindowsframingthecanopiesand
trunksofthefirtrees.

CCR1Residence,Wernerfield,Trinidad,TX(4,690squarefeet):Thisresidenceislocated
onabeautifulwoodedsiteonCedarCreekReservoirandisintendedtoprovideanartful
andlowmaintenanceretreatthatwouldblendinwiththesite.Aslenderfloorplan
designallowedforthebuildingstobewovencarefullythroughthedenseforestofpine
treesthatwereplantedbytheowneronthepropertyasachild.

RichardJ.LeeElementarySchool,Stantec,Dallas,TX(95,633squarefeet):Thisnew,
twostorylearningenvironmentisvisuallyopenandallowsflexibleuseofthespace.The
designprovidesavarietyofchoicesfortaskfocusedorcasualspaces,givingstudents
responsibilityovertheirownlearning,whileteachersfacilitate.

SaintMichaelandAllAngelsColumbarium,MaxLevyArchitect,Dallas,TX(2,500
squarefeet):Thecolumbariumtoaccommodatetheashesof1,000parishionersis
framedbymatureoaks.Fourmasonrywallsharborthreecourts,witheachcourt
acknowledginganattributeofthesky.

Thesubmissionsforthe48thannualAIADallasDesignAwardsfeaturedarangeofproject
