All Trims Are Accessories But All Accessories Are not Trims

Abstract
A garment is made not only from the apparel fabric but also various accessory items. Fabric is
the basic material in garment manufacturing. Except fabric of garment, the other materials are
known as trims & accessories are used. These have to be chosen in such a way that they
complement the outer fabric both aesthetically, in terms of decoration, and practically, in terms of
ensuring that the garment performs as expected in its intended end use. Various kinks of trims &
accessories are used on garments, some are part of the garments, while others are used for
decorating and enhancing the product appearance.

Introduction
Fabric is the main raw material for a garment is to produced, If a look at a complete garment
many other materials will be observed except the main raw material (fabric).These additional
materials are mainly used for two reasons: firstly to make that particular garment suitable for
end-use, secondly to increase aesthetic property of that garments. These additional materials may
be classified into two types as -Trims , -Accessories.

Trims
Trim or trimming actually the Fabricational part of the garments. Several types of trims are used
in a garment such as;
Sewing thread, Zipper, Button, Interlining, Lining, RIB, Labels, Collar Stay, Padding, Down,
Elastic, Twill Tape, Velcro Tape, Seam sealing tape, Stopper, Draw Cord, Piping cord, Cord bell,
Emblem, Logo print, Swivel Hook, Grommet, Cord bell, Buckle, Rivet, Weaving belt, Hook and
eye, Shoulder pad, Shoulder tape, Adjuster, Recco etc. Description of some Trims are given
below:

Sewing Thread:
Sewing threads are special kinds of yarns normally made by multiplying two or more yarns that
are engineered and designed to pass through a sewing machine rapidly. They form efficient
stitches without breaking or becoming distorted during the use life of the product.

Zipper
A fastening device operating by means of two parallel rows of metal or plastic teeth on either
side of a closure that are interlocked by a sliding tab is called zipper. These are used in industrial
clothing, typical apparel garments as a closure in pants, skirt & dresses. Basically it is the part of
chain. The physical part of the zipper are shown in the following figure:

Button
Button is a knob or disc which can be attached to the garments as a means of fastening or
ornamentation. Button is an essential trim which is attached with garments as functional or
decorative purpose. Button can be made from different types of materials. Mostly use metal &
plastic.

There are two basic kinds of buttons : sew-thru buttons and shank buttons .A sew-thru button is
usually flat with two or four hole. A shank button has a solid top and a built-in shank. Buttons are
sized by line, which refers to the diameter, or simply by the diameter measurement. The
commonly used buttons range in size from line 18 or 1 cm (3/8) to line 40 or 2.5 cm
(1),although smaller and larger buttons are available.
Sew-through Button: A disk designed in a variety of shapes, thicknesses and surface patterns
with two or four holes punched equidistant from the center to facilitate attachment to the
garment.

Shank Button: It is hole less Button contain two part and attached by pressing. Here Button hole
is called eyelet.

The size of button is express as ligne where 1Ligne = 0.635m. According to the number of hole
button can be classified as two types1. 2-hole Button
2. 4-hole Button

Snap:
A snap fastener is a pair of interlocking discs, made out of a metal or plastic, commonly used in
place of buttons to fasten clothing and for similar purposes, Usually contains 4 parts.

Interlining
Interlining is one kind of trims which is used between two layers of fabric in garments to
support, re-inforce and control areas of garments. and to retain actual shape, Mainly used in
collar, cuff of shirt And other garments at Lapels, Blazer front, Waist belt, Belt loop, Pocket flap
also used.

Lining
These are extra fabric (generally smooth & lustrous made of silk or manufactured fiber or cotton)
used in inner face of body fabric at garments to provide extra protection. Ex. Lining of blazer &
coat.

RIB
Rib is a double jersey fabric. Rib is used as Collar of T-shirt(made by circular knitting machine),
Collar of Polo-shirt(made by flat-bed knitting machine), Collar of sweater, Collar of Hoddy, Cuff
of T-shirt, Cuff of Polo-shirt, Cuff of sweater and Cuff of hoody.

Label
Label is a tag that gives a description of the performance an inherent in a fabric for the purpose
of aiding the consumer in selection. A label is a part of garments which indicates the various
instructions about garments. Label is attached with garments by swing. There are following types
of label are availableTypes of Label:
1.Main Label: Contains buyer name or brand name.

2.Size Label: Contains garments size.

3.Care Label: Provides information about washing, ironing, drying etc.

4.Integrated Label: Contains main label, care label, and size label in a combination.

Collar Stays
Collar stays are smooth, rigid strips of metal or plastic, rounded at one end and pointed at the
other, inserted into specially made pockets on the underside of a shirt collar to stabilize the
collar's points.

Elastic
A term used to describe narrow fabrics incorporating elastomeric fibers, which extend when
stretch & recover their original dimension when the stretching is removed. Elastics are broadly
used at waist of normal pants, pajama (night dress), skirt, kids trouser (up to 12 years), mans
briefs, lingeries and many other garments. The size of Elastic is expressed by their width. They
are may be , , 1, 1.5, 2 & more.

Twill Tape
Twill tape is a flat twill-woven ribbon of cotton, linen, polyester, or wool and
is used
in sewing and tailoring to reinforce seams, make casings, bind edges, and make sturdy ties for
closing garments (for example, on hospital gowns).

Seam sealing tape


Seam sealing tape is a thermoplastic adhesive film applied to sewn seams of fabrics to prevent
water from leaking through.

Stopper

Darw Cord
A draws cord, or rope used to "draw" (tighten) or tie closed an opening in fabric.

Hook & Eye


A hook-and-eye is a very simple and secure method of fastening garments together. It consists of
a metal hook, commonly made of flattened wire bent to the required shape, and an eye (or
"eyelet") of the same material into which the hook fits.

Grommet
A grommet is a ring or edge strip inserted into a hole through thin material, typically a sheet of
textile fabric, sheet metal and or composite of carbon fiber, wood or honeycomb.

Rivet
Rivet is used to reinforce the garment at high stress locations (i.e. around the pockets or side
seams).

Accessories
Accessories are actually non fabricational part of the garments used for ornamentation. Several
types of accessories are used in a garment such as;
Ploy Bag, Elastic Bag, Size tag, Carton, Collar Stand, Neck Board, Back Board, Butterfly,
Hanger, Sticker, Apline, Gum tape, Scotch tape, Tag pin, Safety pin, Brass pin, Defect indicator,
Barcode, Gum tape, Scotch tape, Tissue paper, Plastic clip, Numbering sticker, Size sticker,
Cartoon sticker, Safety sticker, Arrow sticker, Ball chain etc. Description of some Accessories
are given below:
Ploy Bag
Poly bag Is very important accessories for the garments. The garments keep it for safety,
transport and carry.

Elastic Bag

Elastic bags are also used in many cases for containing and transporting Garments.

Size tag
Size tags are those tag that indicate the size of a particular garment.

Carton
Number of ply indicates the quality of a carton. There are: 3 ply carton, 5 ply carton, 7 ply
carton, 9 ply carton etc.

Back board
Back board is mainly used to support the garments from back side during packaging.

Scotch Tap
The scotch tap is uses as a accessories for binding the carton. For its binding the carton have no
damage or replacement of it. For attach the scotch tape its not open for that its easy to carry any
where any time.

Tag pin

Hang tag
Hang tag is a tag attached to a piece of merchandise giving information about its composition
and proper care and use.

Collar Band
A collar band is an item of Christian clerical clothing. It is a detachable collar that buttons onto
a clergy shirt or rabbat (vest), being fastened by two metal studs, one attached at the front and
one at the back to hold the collar to the shirt.

Price tag

Price tag is a tag which is uses for decorative purpose. This contains price of the garments write
down there . The price tag also contains the buyer name, made by from, which brand etc. the
price tag made by plastic, metal, wood etc.

Apline
Alpine is also one kind of accessories. Which uses after the garments packeting. The alpine uses
to close the poly bag . There have many types of alpine are uses in garments industries.

Butter Fly
Butter fly is a most importance accessories in garments after making. It is uses for the given
strength in collar. It holds in the point of button and button hold attaching point.

Carton sticker
Sticker is uses for mainly decoration purpose. In the front of poly it attach. It contain its band
name, label, size etc. it attach by sealer or buyer.

Plastic Clip
Plastic clip is as a accessories. Plastic clip is uses for the crimp of garments and keep it clean.
And hold the garments after placating. And it not move in the carton when transport.

Conclusion
Trims and Accessories are used to make a garments suitable for use and make it attractive and
good looking for sales. Trims can be defined as a part of the garment whereas Accessories are
added for increasing the aesthetic properties of the garment to make it attractive. So, it can be
said that all trims are accessories but all accessories are not trims.
