Product Type : Blown/Oxidized Grade Bitumen
Supplier : BENZENE INTERNATIONAL PTE LTD
5 Coleman Street,# 02 ‐27 The Excelsior
Singapore 179805
2. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
The product is a safe commodity if handled correctly but can be hazardous if not treated with caution
and respect. Hazards arising during the handling of the product may be due to:
The flammable nature of the product.
The high handling temperature involved.
The presence of associated noxious vapours.
The effect of persistent contact with the skin.
Many hazards arising from the above are avoidable by good design and use of sound operational
methods.
Human Health Hazards
Molten product adheres to the skin and causes burns. Hydrogen sulphide may accumulate in the
head space of containers.
Prolonged exposure to vapour concentration above the recommended exposure standard may cause
irritation of the skin, eyes and upper respiratory tract.
Safety Hazards
Not classified as flammable but will burn. Release of flammable vapour is possible on hot storage.
Contact of molten product with water leads to violent expansion and high potential for ‘boil‐over’.
Environmental Hazards
Not classified as dangerous under European Commission criteria.
3. FIRST AID MEASURES
Symptoms and Effects
Skin Burns
Prolonged exposure to vapour concentration above the recommended occupational exposure
standard may cause irritation of the skin, eyes and upper respiratory tract. Unconsciousness as a
result of exposure to hydrogen sulphide may occur extremely rapidly and without other symptoms.
Protection of First Aiders
Wear self‐contained breathing apparatus if presence of hydrogen sulphide is suspected.
First Aid‐Inhalation
Remove to fresh air.
If breathing has stopped, apply artificial respiration.
If breathing but unconscious, place in the recovery position.
If heartbeat absent, give external cardiac compression.
If symptoms persist, obtain medical attention.
First Aid‐Skin
Molten product on the skin should be cooled rapidly with cold water but not pulled off.
In case of circumferential burn with adhesion of the molten product, the adhering product should be
split to prevent a tourniquet effect as it cools,
Contaminated clothing must be removed as soon as possible. It must be relaundered before use.
First Aid‐Eye
Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 10 minutes and seek medical advice.
First Aid‐Ingestion
Do not induce vomiting. Give water to drink provided patient is conscious. Protect the airway if
vomiting begins. If rapid recovery does not occur, obtain medical attention.
Advice to Physicians
Treat symptomatically. In the case of burns, no attempt should be made to remove firmly adherent
product from the skin. It will provide a sterile dressing and detach itself after a few days. When it is
necessary to remove adhering product from the skin, liberal amount of warm medicinal paraffin can
be used. Prolonged exposure to high concentration of hydrogen sulphide may lead to delayed
chemical pneumonitis (lung odema).
4. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Specific Hazards
Combustion is likely to give rise to a complex mixture of gases and airborne particulate including
carbon monoxide, oxides of sulphur and unidentified organic and inorganic compounds.
Extinguishing Media
Foam or water spray. Dry chemical powder, carbon dioxide, sand or earth may be used for small fires
only.
Unsuitable Extinguishing Media
Do not use water in jet. Use of halon extinguishers should be avoided for environmental reasons.
Protective Equipment
Proper protective equipment including breathing apparatus must be worn when approaching a fire in
a confined space.
Other Information
Molten product can cause violent eruption when in contact with water and may splatter hot
materials.
5. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Personal Precautions
Do not allow molten product to contact water or other liquids. Evacuate the area of all non‐essential
personnel. Remove ignition sources. Shut off leaks if possible without personal risk.
Personal Protection
Wear protective clothing specified for normal operation.
Environmental Precautions
Use appropriate containment to avoid environmental contamination. Prevent further leakage or
spillage if safe to do so.
Cleanup Methods‐small spill
Absorb or contain liquid with sand, earth or spill‐control materials. Shovel into suitable, clearly
marked containers for disposal or reclamation in accordance with local regulations.
Cleanup Methods‐large spill
Prevent from spreading by making a trench or barrier with sand, earth or other containment
materials. Otherwise, treat as for small spillage.
6. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Avoid contact with heated or molten product.
Avoid breathing in of fumes or vapour of heated product.
Do not breathe in fumes which may accumulate in the vapour‐head space of containers.
When handling product, safety footwear should be worn and proper handling equipment
should be used.
When handling product, do not eat, drink or smoke.
Handling Temperature
Maximum 230 º C.
Storage
Tank must be specifically designed for use with this product. Tank should be provided with a heating
facility. Ensure heating coils are always well covered with product (minimum 20 cm). Tank should be
lagged to prevent heat‐loss. Prevent ingress of water. Use lowest practicable storage temperature
and avoid through‐draughts of air to minimize risk of generating a flammable condition in this tank
space.
Product Transfer
Minimum pumping temperatures are as follows:‐
Blown Grade 85/25 is 160ºC
Blown Grade 85/40 is 163ºC
Blown Grade 115/15 is 202ºC
Blown Grade 10/20 is 190ºC
Avoid splash filling. Avoid using compressed air for filling, discharging or handling.
7. PERSONAL PROTECTION
Wash hands before eating, drinking or smoking. Launder overalls and under‐garments regularly.
Dispose of soiled gloves.
Respiratory Protection
Not normally required. In the event of inhalation risk from vapour, fume or mist, wear a respirator.
Hand Protection
Heat‐resistant gloves, close‐fitting at wrists.
Eye Protection
Monogoggles or full‐faced shield.
Body Protection
Safety shoes or boots. Cotton overalls, close‐fitting at neck and wrists. If splashes of molten product
are likely to occur, use helmet with neck‐cloth and full‐faced shield.
