With this letter I hereby would like to express my motivation for joining IFMSA

exchange in neurology department. The subject that I thought will not be interested
in, but end up falling in love with it.
Being a newbie in going abroad as an exchange student, I feel like lit myself with a
new challenge. In this era of internet, people connect each other so easily. Some
people choose to stay and connect via internet, while the others felt the spark to go
travelling all over the place. That is including me. Not only the subject of interest
made me excited, but also Slovakia itself has its own attractiveness. The cities such
as Banska stiavnica, Bardejov, Trnava, Bojnice, Trencin, Kosice were really incredible
from its view and histories, thus I would like to prove my eyes that those cities were
much prettier than I saw on internet. I know it sounds silly and egoist, but I believe
everyone has their own achievements to be fulfilled. Besides experiences,
extending network is also my goal. Shutting my eyes from knowledge outside my
country is suicide action only. Those are the reasons that eager me to join this
exchange program.
In pre-clinic medicine, we have learned neurology in Neurological Behavior and
Special Senses for six months. It is not about having difficulties in studying but I
have no interest in it at first. Well, things were changed. When I found out that
learning neuron is kind of close to studying electricity and other physics theory... it
became interesting. I do not know why, but it may be related with the fact that my
father is a senior engineer in national electricity department and I studied with him
a lot when I was kid. Then, neurology becomes fun, it is indeed complicated but it
just triggered me to learn more.
In clerkship, we have learned neurology department for three weeks. That short
period was quite enough since the neurology competencies for general physician in
my country were not that much. The impressive thing in neurology department was
my groups consultant doctor. He was not kind of strict one, but the way he talked
and taught us always made us stress and feel stupid. We were always left hundred
steps behind him, no matter how much we have read books the night before. I feel
like being tortured for three weeks, but well, he sometimes talked funny too. That is
why instead of imagining him as an old, monstrous and boring doctor, he is an
attractive one. In the end, although my final test score was not good enough, he still
convinced me to join neurology department. Perhaps, that was the point where he
touched my hearts to learn neurology more.
Therefore, I wish I can obtain this opportunity to observe the technology and
expertise of the medical staff at neurology department in Slovakia and also be a
small part of it, although it is only for a short period of time. I believe these new
experiences and knowledge will do good things when I am officially a physician,
both for me and my surroundings.
